Another game lost...and a season with it?

NEW YORK -- Top of the first inning Sunday: Jacoby Ellsbury leads off with a single, and promptly gets picked off.

Bottom of the first inning Sunday: The Yankees turn two bunt singles, two steals, a wild pitch, a passed ball and an error into two runs.

The game could have ended right there. The Red Sox season could have ended right there.

You thought the 9-1 loss to the Yankees on Saturday was bad? Well, the 6-2 loss on Sunday afternoon was no better.

And John Lackey, owner of the worst ERA of any regular starting pitcher in baseball, starts for the Red Sox on Sunday night.

Oh, and the out-of-town scoreboard kept showing the Rays ahead of the Blue Jays. The Rays won, 5-2, cutting the Boston lead in the wild card to just half a game.

"We've got four games," manager Terry Francona said. "We can right our whatever. We need to work on our righting skills."

Francona then wrote out a Game 2 lineup that included J.D. Drew, in his first appearance since July 19.

There is some good news, Red Sox fans. Jacoby Ellsbury hit two home runs, his 29th and 30th of the year. He has 100 RBI. He's having a great September.

He'd be an MVP candidate, if his teammates weren't collapsing around him.

The Red Sox are 5-18 in September. They're 1-18 when they don't score 12 runs.

Their starting pitchers -- it was Tim Wakefield Sunday afternoon -- have a 7.32 ERA.

They've scored first in just two of their last 16 games.

They might have scored first Sunday afternoon -- except that Ellsbury got picked off. The Yankees scored first -- because the Red Sox handed them two runs.

Oh, and John Lackey starts Sunday night. With J.D. Drew in right field.

If Boston somehow makes it to the playoffs they'll be one and done in the divisional series, they got nothing right now.  High expectations, lousy results.  Looks like it's time once again to over spend this off season, anyone think Prince Fielder or Albert would look good as their new DH, or how about Yu Darvish, he could hang with Dice K and he'll only run $125 million between the posting fee and his contract?  Hey, it's not my money, or maybe just a little bit, I'm sure they got some of the $200 I wasted this year on the baseball package.

Agreed,  the sox are playing outright lousy ball and are stinking up the joint, but to say where are the obnoxious Sox fans now, reeks of hypocrisism as obviously is a New Yorker who are undisputably the most obnoxious fans in any sport. Were still here and while we are suffering we have not given up our loyalty to the team.  Curses on the " Evil Empire ".  May the feas of a thousand camel invest your armpits !!

Where are all the obnoxious Sox fans now.  A month or so ago, they were everywhere.  Now not a one, or very very few.  If the slid continues they may claim the record of the worst decline during the season.  What a record to hold.

The last few games reminds me of the "Who's on First"  comedy by Abbott and Costello.  They definitely can't field, run the bases or do any of the fundamentals a team has to do to win.  And these guys are getting paid BIG bucks to stink up the field.  Man what a waste of money.

Boston hasn't collapsed like this in 30 years.  The Yankees won't even need a Bucky Dent like performance on the last day of the season to get in the playoffs, they've already won the division( Who saw that coming back in April, everyone in New York did.)  The Red Sox should have plenty of time to get together and discuss what went wrong during the playoffs while they're at home watching the games on TV and not participating.

I'll bet MLB is hoping the RedSox finish the fold. This team would be an embarrassment in the post season. Everyone is hoping to draw the Sox...
