Schumaker replaces Jay in Cardinals lineup

ARLINGTON, Texas -- With Jon Jay hitless in 14 World Series at-bats, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa has switched center fielders for Game 5 of the World Series.

Skip Schumaker is playing center field and batting eighth.

Schumaker went 6-for-10 in the Division Series against the Phillies, but strained his right oblique in Game 5 and was left off the roster for the National League Championship Series. Schumaker started just five games in center field this season (plus one in the Division Series), but he has started there 115 times in his major-league career.

Schumaker replaces Jay in Cardinals lineup

Jay is pressing too much.  And Skip is the next best centerfielder.  I would bat Skip 9th, but 8th isn't a bad call either.

If Skip doesn't play well, they can always go badk to Jay.

Schumaker replaces Jay in Cardinals lineup

My question though is: Does St. Louis really need offense from Jay's bat with all the muscle they have in this lineup. I hope that Schumaker in CF doesn't end up costing them a couple runs because they wanted a bit more offense. Hmm, we'll see I reckon.

. .  and he's a better baserunner than Jay???   I worry about Skip's centerfield play versus what Jay has accomplished but Jay's baserunning as a Cardinal has been very, very poor.  Between being picked off base, trying to steal second  . .  and being thrown out  . . . with Albert at bat not to mention the many times he ill-advised gets thrown out trying to get an extra base.  He's had a nice year offensively and made some great catches in the postseason so I have mixed feelings about him being on the bench tonight but he is definitely not a fast baserunner nor does he use good judgement.

Schumaker replaces Jay in Cardinals lineup

Schumaker is one of baseball's stupidest players.  Watch him tonight.  If there is a close play at first he will invaribly slide into the base, once again trying to prove that the laws of physics don't apply to him.  He just doesn't get that you can get to first faster when only the soles of your feet are touching the ground than when you are sliding on several more square inches of your body.

Schumaker replaces Jay in Cardinals lineup

This is a bold move, but one that I thinks needed to be made.  I was just asking my friends last night what could we do, as Jay was our BEST defensive centerfielder and it would be almost impossible to put Schumaker in center, but sure enough....Tony did!  Go Schumaker...2 for 4 with 2 RBI's tonight...YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!!!!
