Victor Martinez hurt, could miss 2012 season

The Tigers could be without designated hitter Victor Martinez for the entire 2012 season, after the team announced Tuesday that Martinez suffered a serious injury to his left knee in offseason training.

Martinez will be reevaluated next week by Dr. Richard Steadman, but the team said the initial finding is that he has a torn ACL, and the expectation is that surgery will be required.

The injury is a huge blow to a Tiger team that is a strong favorite to repeat as American League Central champions. Martinez hit .330 and drove in 103 runs in his first year with the Tigers, providing strong protection in the batting order for Miguel Cabrera.

The Tigers originally signed Martinez as a combination catcher and DH, but he became a full-time DH late last season and was expected to fill the same role in 2012. His injury could spur the Tigers to sign one of the remaining DH types on the market. Quite a few remain available, including ex-Tigers Carlos Pena and Johnny Damon, as well as Hideki Matsui.

The Tigers are also among the teams most interested in Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. But even if they sign Cespedes, it's not clear he would be ready to contribute immediately.

Yep, I'd have to put the over/under on Miguel Cabera walks at about 140 right now.  No reason for anyone to pitch to Miggy if it's Jhonny Peralta batting behind him.

Easy solution.  Fielder at First/DH and Miggy at third where he used to play.  Remember, Leyland had Miggy taking ground balls at third during the playoffs.  If the Tigers did reach the World Series last year, Miggy was slated to play third and V-Mart 1st when they played in the National League park.

This is not only the loss of V-Mart's bat, which is impossible to replace 1 for 1 unless the Tigers get Fielder (which isn't happening), but it affects Cabrera as well.  Teams will do much more pitching around Cabrera without V-Mart's clutch bat right behind him.  This is a huge loss.

The Tigers will be hard pressed to find someone to fill the void that will be left by him in 2012.

It's literally impossible for the Tigers to fill that void.  Unless they are willing to trade a ridiculous package of prospects/regulars they won't even come close.   The only way the Tigers overcome this Vmart injury is a few things have to go right.  First of all the pitching has to be awesome, we need Porcello and Scherzer to reach their potential and be consistent.  And finally they need a guy like Delmon Young to hit like he did 2 years ago for the Twins and hit the ball like he did in Detroit the last 40 games.

If those things happen, the Tigers will be fine... if not, they'll be in trouble.

This is going to KILL the Tigers! I feel bad for the guy. But things happen.
You wont be able to replace a guy like VMart with Damon or C Pena , Thats Crazy!
They are going to have to make a trade if they want to compete.

I'm honestly not seeing it as a huge problem.  At catcher his numbers are remarkable.  At DH, they are strong, but harldy irreplacable.  If they pick up Damon for example, the gap between what he and VMart provides is hardly the kind of gap that take a world series contender to a non contender.
CapD,

Detroit is going to have a very difficult time trying to find someone who hit .330 and knocked in over 100 runs at this point in the offseason.

Also, while VMart's overall numbers were impressive -- the most impressive numbers he put up is -- hitting .400 in ABs after a Cabrera walk and leading the MLB in BA w/ RISP, where he hit over .400.  The guy was as clutch as any Tiger on the team last year.

One of the biggest downsides of VMart being out is the intangibles -- His presence in the lockerroom, his little boy's presence in the lockerroom (I know that sounds strange, but every Tiger interviewed last year talked about VMart's son helping them stay loose before games)  The Tigers will be hard pressed to find someone to fill the void that will be left by him in 2012.

So you keep saying that I am trolling you,yet this is another thread where you STALKED me and insulted me trying to get me to react.

Moron.  I'm a Detroit sports fan so you can't exactly say I stalk you in a Tiger thread.  Go walk in front of a car or something....
