Victor Martinez hurt, could miss 2012 season

The Tigers could be without designated hitter Victor Martinez for the entire 2012 season, after the team announced Tuesday that Martinez suffered a serious injury to his left knee in offseason training.

Martinez will be reevaluated next week by Dr. Richard Steadman, but the team said the initial finding is that he has a torn ACL, and the expectation is that surgery will be required.

The injury is a huge blow to a Tiger team that is a strong favorite to repeat as American League Central champions. Martinez hit .330 and drove in 103 runs in his first year with the Tigers, providing strong protection in the batting order for Miguel Cabrera.

The Tigers originally signed Martinez as a combination catcher and DH, but he became a full-time DH late last season and was expected to fill the same role in 2012. His injury could spur the Tigers to sign one of the remaining DH types on the market. Quite a few remain available, including ex-Tigers Carlos Pena and Johnny Damon, as well as Hideki Matsui.

The Tigers are also among the teams most interested in Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. But even if they sign Cespedes, it's not clear he would be ready to contribute immediately.

Dude, slow down ease off the panic button.  The Tigers aren`t going to enter the Prince Fielder bidding.  Fat boy Miguel Cabrera is bad enough at first base, having him stand at third bbase is not an option.  He`d be more viable as the DH, but first works for now.  There are less expensive options...hey how`s always injured Carlos Guillen is worth wasting more $ on.  That`s a huge loss for Tigers, but they can win AL Central w/o him.  Matsui might fit ok at a reasonable $.

"Hurry up and put in a bid for Prince Fielder, move Miguel Cabrera to third base.  Brandon Inge could play 2nd base.  Victor is essentially irreplaceable though, his timely hitting and protection for Cabrera was amazing last year!!!"

Why would you want to pay 1 guy 20 plus million? Oh wait.... it's not your cash!
You don't want to put Cabrera at 3rd, and Inge how is he still around? I wouldn't
count Victor out just yet, he is a very good player and I think he will want to rehab hard to get back this summer.

Victor Martinez hurt, could miss 2012 season

As a Tigers fan, this is as disappointing for us and MArtinez as it is good news to Indian fan. One thing that I know for sure is Mr Illitch has never hesitated to spend money for the right person ie: Cabrera, Verlander, Martinez etc. If he feels a strong need. Replacing what V Mart did for us last year will be tough, but Dave Dombrowski will find the right guy and Mr. Illitch will pay him.

Cav for Life: what a "loser" handle, and comment.  You mean CADAVER for life?  I know you'll probably need to look it up, but...

Cabrera was a terrible 3rd baseman when he was playing it consistantly.  Now that he's had a couple years off, he's going to be an even worse 3rd baseman.

Huge blow to the team and most importantly Miggy Cabrera.  Miggy better be ready to drop his bat and walk to first base even more this season if we don't sign a viable replacement DH.  The Tigers are starting to resemble the injury bug of the Detroit Lions!
