Victor Martinez hurt, could miss 2012 season

The Tigers could be without designated hitter Victor Martinez for the entire 2012 season, after the team announced Tuesday that Martinez suffered a serious injury to his left knee in offseason training.

Martinez will be reevaluated next week by Dr. Richard Steadman, but the team said the initial finding is that he has a torn ACL, and the expectation is that surgery will be required.

The injury is a huge blow to a Tiger team that is a strong favorite to repeat as American League Central champions. Martinez hit .330 and drove in 103 runs in his first year with the Tigers, providing strong protection in the batting order for Miguel Cabrera.

The Tigers originally signed Martinez as a combination catcher and DH, but he became a full-time DH late last season and was expected to fill the same role in 2012. His injury could spur the Tigers to sign one of the remaining DH types on the market. Quite a few remain available, including ex-Tigers Carlos Pena and Johnny Damon, as well as Hideki Matsui.

The Tigers are also among the teams most interested in Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. But even if they sign Cespedes, it's not clear he would be ready to contribute immediately.

Victor Martinez hurt, could miss 2012 season

I am not looking to disrespect the Tigers or the fans that actually LIVE in Detroit and root for the Tigers

Liar.  You are looking to insult and disrespect ALL Detroit fans, regardless of where they live or why they support these teams.  Your blind rage has been going on for over half a year, spilling over from baseball to football, and across screen names.  This illogical rage has led you to tell outrageous lies about financial success and personal accomplishments, and has even driven you to repeatedly attempt to 'prove' your manliness by meeting other posters to fight (which you then back out of at the first sign that the other party accepting - making your attempt not only pointless but actually counterproductive to what you are supposedly trying to prove).  In reality you are such a scared, bitter, angry old man that you have mostly retreated from the main message boards to blogs to post your ankle-biting little rants since here they cannot be flagged as the mindless insulting drivel that they are.  Having said all that, may you someday reflect on your life and come to terms with whatever it is that has turned you into the hateful shrew we see today and become a better person, lest you die alone and uncared for.

Oh, and have a nice day.

Victor Martinez hurt, could miss 2012 season

What is truly sad is that baseball allows this division to exist,I mean the A.L EAST had 4 teams with a 500 or better record last season and this joke of a Division had 1.It is not fair to the Blue Jays and The oriles that they have to Play the Yankees,Sox and rays every year. And the Tigers get to win a division, not because they are any good. But because the other 4 teams SUCK.

Brian, thank you for this post because if nothing else you just proved beyond any reasonable doubt what a moron you truly are.

The fact you keep ignoring the fact the Tigers had a winning record against the A.L East and keep talking about the Central proves you are as stupid as they get.  The fact you are completely ignoring the fact the Tigers knocked the Yankees out of the playoffs both times they've faced them in the last 5 seasons proves once again how stupid you are.   And the fact you tell us the Tigers aren't even a good team proves you are about as big a moron these boards have ever seen.

Like it or lump it, the Tigers are a good team.....  only an idiot like you would think otherwise.

But yes Brian, keep referring to 1984 or whatever you're doing because while you keep talking nonesense the Tigers will keep winning a ton of baseball games.

And also against the Blue Jays is that many players don't want to play in Canada. RedWings may disagree, but that is my take on it

I can't completely disagree with that statement because Toronto in most cases certainly isn't a great destination for star free agents.

But there are more reasons for the Jays not doing as well as they should, most of which revolve around bad management.  They have overpaid and stuck themselves with terrible player contracts in the past.  Some of these contracts they were lucky to unload but there were many others that kept them from growing as an organization.

That team that is "not any good", beat your Yanks in the Division Series AND had a winning record against all 3 A.L. playoff teams during the season!  Would have been in the W.S. if Nelson Cruz didn't play out of his mind in the AL Championship.  I'll agree the rest of the division leaves a lot to be desired, but saying the Tigers aren't any good, just proves you know very little about baseball!
