Victor Martinez hurt, could miss 2012 season

The Tigers could be without designated hitter Victor Martinez for the entire 2012 season, after the team announced Tuesday that Martinez suffered a serious injury to his left knee in offseason training.

Martinez will be reevaluated next week by Dr. Richard Steadman, but the team said the initial finding is that he has a torn ACL, and the expectation is that surgery will be required.

The injury is a huge blow to a Tiger team that is a strong favorite to repeat as American League Central champions. Martinez hit .330 and drove in 103 runs in his first year with the Tigers, providing strong protection in the batting order for Miguel Cabrera.

The Tigers originally signed Martinez as a combination catcher and DH, but he became a full-time DH late last season and was expected to fill the same role in 2012. His injury could spur the Tigers to sign one of the remaining DH types on the market. Quite a few remain available, including ex-Tigers Carlos Pena and Johnny Damon, as well as Hideki Matsui.

The Tigers are also among the teams most interested in Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. But even if they sign Cespedes, it's not clear he would be ready to contribute immediately.

Victor Martinez hurt, could miss 2012 season

Brian, you know the divisions are based on geography. The Yankees, Red Sox,  Orioles, Blue Jays and Rays are all located on the east coast or in the eastern part of Canada. Likewise, the Tigers, White Sox, Indians, Twins and Royals are all pretty close to each other geographically.

Yes, the Blue Jays and Orioles are overmatched in the East. But it is due to ownership not willing to spend megabuckson prime free agents and poor farm management. And also against the Blue Jays is that many players don't want to play in Canada. RedWings may disagree, but that is my take on it.

Martinez' injury is devastating. The Tigers may still win the A.L. Central, as the Twins are bad, KC and Cleveland are too young while the CWS are in dissarray, but Detroit will go no where in the playoffs without another big bat. Miguel Cabrera will most definetly lead the league in intentional walks.
I hope Delmon Young and Brennan Boesch can pick up the slack, but certainly can't count on that. My hope is that Dave Dombrowski goes out and gets someone such as David Wright or the like. Most probable is a "fill-in" guy and hopefully something opening up in the market nearing the trade deadline. Either way, GO TIGERS!!  One question......When was Victor Marinez hurt?? My partial season ticket money was due last Wednesday. Did they (the Tigers) hold off on releasing his injury? Just food for thought.

This is going to have a real negative impact on the Tigers for Martinez is Mr. Clutch, and a great guy to have around the clubhouse. Is there a solution? Perhaps one is to have Ordonez as the DH although he does have a penchant for grounding into double plays. Perhaps some of the young guys, such as Boesch, can act as a replacement. It is a sad day for Detroit fans. Is Mr. Kaline available?!?

Ouch, tough break for the Tigers.  Just heard Verlander's going to take over the DH spot.  All's well again in Tigertown.

Re the Tigers outwinning the Yankees, they did so 15 times in the 29 years between 1965 and 1993.  That covers the period from the beginning of the raft to the shift to 3 divisions.  No question the Yanks have won more over the past 50 years, but facts is facts.  You could look it up, as the old saying goes.

Here's hoping the Tigers rethink retaining Wilson Betemit, and/or giving Ryan Strieby a chance in the bigs.

Most of us know that Brian8 does some Detroit hating...he's all over the Lions boards too. I'd guess maybe the Pistons boards, but that's too easy anyway, and the Wings don't offer much room for criticism.

Anyway, I think this is a huge blow to both the lineup and team morale. They went from adding one or two peices that might get them to the next level to needing to replace a 330 hitter. It can be done, and I do agree with one Brain8 point; it's a weak division, so that helps our chances.
