Victor Martinez hurt, could miss 2012 season

The Tigers could be without designated hitter Victor Martinez for the entire 2012 season, after the team announced Tuesday that Martinez suffered a serious injury to his left knee in offseason training.

Martinez will be reevaluated next week by Dr. Richard Steadman, but the team said the initial finding is that he has a torn ACL, and the expectation is that surgery will be required.

The injury is a huge blow to a Tiger team that is a strong favorite to repeat as American League Central champions. Martinez hit .330 and drove in 103 runs in his first year with the Tigers, providing strong protection in the batting order for Miguel Cabrera.

The Tigers originally signed Martinez as a combination catcher and DH, but he became a full-time DH late last season and was expected to fill the same role in 2012. His injury could spur the Tigers to sign one of the remaining DH types on the market. Quite a few remain available, including ex-Tigers Carlos Pena and Johnny Damon, as well as Hideki Matsui.

The Tigers are also among the teams most interested in Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. But even if they sign Cespedes, it's not clear he would be ready to contribute immediately.

This will hurt the Tigers chances of repeating as division champs (although no one else in the Central looks all that imposing!) but not kill it. I could see Detroit signing either Carlos Pena or maybe even Vladamir Guerrero. Detroit will be fine though whatever road they take.

go figure a detroit story/thread and the old weasel cueball shows up ... tiger fans ignore him just like everyone else does...

ilitch like monoghan of old will spend what is required to offer the fans a great product and detroit is lucky and appreciates his support(as noted by attendance numbers)
vmart's injury is unfortunate and couldnt havent happened at a worse time, but i am guessing this just may throw them into the fielder sweeps! 7 or 8 mil for pena or spend the money on fielder????? ol poppa cecil would enjoy his boy being a tiger and reliving some of his big moments at the old michigan/trumble ballpark
at least if they spend the $$$ on fielder(i still am not sold though on fielder) they keep him away from texas.

The Tigers could do a lot worse than signing Carlos Pena for 7 million or so.  He does only hit 220-230, but he hit 28 Hrs, 80 RBI and had a very respectable .357 OBP last year for a bad Cubs team with no lineup protection.  With big bats in the lineup OBP is more beneficial.  He's also great in the field which could then lead them to put Cabrera at DH.

This hurts. It was a great move by the Tigers to acquire Martinez. He made the whole lineup better, not allowing the opposing team's pitchers to pitch around Cabrera. This puts a big whole in their lineup, because not only are they going to miss his bat, but other hitters are going to suffer without him.

The Tigers have lost money the last 2 years,Like someone said The only other team to do that was the Mets, but at least the Mets have an excuse, they were MADOFFED

Why is a jets fan, one who has yet to pick up the English language or basic punctuation, picking on Tigers fans?  How's that Super Bowl run going there, eh?

The loss of VMart will be huge.  This might push them into the Fielder sweepstakes and into throwing away a lot of money.  Or Cesspedes, or as they call him locally the Cuban Centipede, who is having a problem hitting winter ball pitching.  I just hope the Tigers don't do something rash like go after Carlos Pena or these two guys.  Maybe they should jump into the chase for Votto since the Reds cannot afford him.....

Oh right... sorry man.  I thought when you said "last 2 years" that you meant last 2 years.  Didn't know you last year wasn't really in the last 2 years.
