The Tigers could be without designated hitter Victor Martinez for the entire 2012 season, after the team announced Tuesday that Martinez suffered a serious injury to his left knee in offseason training.

Martinez will be reevaluated next week by Dr. Richard Steadman, but the team said the initial finding is that he has a torn ACL, and the expectation is that surgery will be required.

The injury is a huge blow to a Tiger team that is a strong favorite to repeat as American League Central champions. Martinez hit .330 and drove in 103 runs in his first year with the Tigers, providing strong protection in the batting order for Miguel Cabrera.

The Tigers originally signed Martinez as a combination catcher and DH, but he became a full-time DH late last season and was expected to fill the same role in 2012. His injury could spur the Tigers to sign one of the remaining DH types on the market. Quite a few remain available, including ex-Tigers Carlos Pena and Johnny Damon, as well as Hideki Matsui.

The Tigers are also among the teams most interested in Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. But even if they sign Cespedes, it's not clear he would be ready to contribute immediately.

The Tigers have lost money the last 2 years,Like someone said The only other team to do that was the Mets, but at least the Mets have an excuse, they were MADOFFED

You don't even have a clue if they lost money last season, those numbers aren't out yet.  If they are, show me because I wanna see them.

Why is anyone concerned about how much $$$ Prince Fielder would get?  It is not your money and there is NO cap in MLB.  The Tigers played in the ALCS last year and need to WIN now, they need a bat to replace Martinez and Fielder is the best hitter out there, let Leyland decide how to use him.

Miguel Cabrera is about 40-50 pounds from being anything but a statue at third base.  He ate himself out of that position.....it's why he is at first.

I knew the Mets lost millions; didn't know that the Tigers lost $ also.  But Ilitch is a billionnaire, gets comp for Vmart, so losing Vmart should not be the end of the world or anything.  Hey if the Indinas don't make the post season again, I wish good luck to the Tigers to win it for the AL Central.

But I don't know what that means in relation to the salary cap, luxury tax if a team goes over including that money, etc.
Did Victor Martinez sign with the Lions while I was hibernating?

It might be tough but of course it is not literally impossible.  It gonna take , thats the bottom line.  Hey, I'm an Indians fan and well know the role of payroll in success.  (Or the lack of payroll in not succeeding.)

Do the Tigers get some kind of insurance coverage on Victor?  They well might.

Ok.  So maybe it's not LITERALLY impossible to fill that void but realistically speaking yes, it's impossible.  The Detroit Tigers can spend 100 million dollars but not too much more before they are in trouble.  Two years ago only 2 teams lost money in MLB, the Mets and the Tigers.  The Tigers lost something like 17 million dollars, not sure how it worked out last year but I'm sure the playoff games helped them out a lot financially.    Literally speaking they can sign Fielder to a huge deal and move Miggy to 3rd base and suddenly the team is better then ever.  And when Vmart comes back it things get even better.  But there hasn't even been ONE rumor online or anywhere else about the Tigers going after Fielder, I can't imagine they are even considering another 20 million dollar contract.  They already have 2 of those.... tough for any team outside of New York and maybe a couple others to have three 20 million dollar deals on the books.

Supposedly the Tigers are insured for 6.5 million dollars for the loss of Vmart.... But I don't know what that means in relation to the salary cap, luxury tax if a team goes over including that money, etc.

What Tigers catcher was caught doing roids, am I missing something?

Is the 37-year-old star known as Pudge on the list of 104 players who tested positive for steroids during baseball's 2003 survey?

"Only God knows," Rodriguez said softly.

Canseco, a former teammate in Texas, has alleged he injected the steroids into Rodriguez.

You be the judge.

As for V-mart, even if there is some suspicion, so what?  Blame Bud Selig, not the players.
