Crawford has wrist surgery, may miss Opening Day

Posted on: January 17, 2012 3:57 pm

Carl Crawford underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left wrist, Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington told reporters today (via Rob Bradford of WEEI.com). Cherington said that while Crawford could miss the start of the season, the Red Sox haven't ruled out the possibility that he'll be ready for Opening Day.

According to Cherington, Crawford began experiencing soreness in the wrist when he increased his hitting activity within the last few weeks.

Crawford had a terrible first season with the Red Sox, after signing a seven-year, $142 million contract as a free agent.

Who cares.  Not like he would make it through an entire season anyway.  B.U.S.T.

This may prove to be one of the worst contracts of the past couple decades.  This deal rivals some of those Isiah Thomas deals from the Knicks.

Relax Sox fans, only probably 5 more years before you can trade him and eat the last year of his deal.  Give that one finger thank you to Theo for this horrible deal....

I'll agree with you that wrist injuries are horrible for hitters.  Beyond that, you are blowing smoke!  Saying he can't play on the big stage after one year is a little premature.  And saying he is overpaid certainly doesn't put him in elite company.  Every pro athlete is overpaid.

That would be a good thing for the RedSox.  Crawford was one of the worst FA signings...way overpaid.  Plus Crawford was used to being a big fish in a little pond in Tampa..the Sharks ate Crawford  up on the big stage in Boston.  Some guys can`t play in NY or Boston..Crawford seems to be one of them.   A wrist injury is horrible for a hitter.
I don't that Crawford is the worse FA signing, I could think of worse FA then Crawford. I do agree that he was over paid, I think part of Crawford problem is that he wanted to prove that he deserve that big contract. I think that Crawford will do better this coming season, as a diehard Cub fan I be happy to trade Soriano for Crawford

Saying a player can't play in a big pond is just giving a player an excuse, there are an lot players that did well in NY or Boston.

What incentive is there for players to play like they all do in their contract year season after they secure this massive multi-year deals? I hope Carl pans out though. Go Sox!

Let's not panic Red sox nation. Sound like this isn't a major concern and hopefully it will get CC ready for a big bounce back season.

Crawford had a bad year for sure, but I really see him bouncing back. I think his contract was a bit high, but at the time people weren't complaining about it because he was playing to that level. He should be fine in the future, maybe not what some Sox fans had hope, but pretty good. People should give him another year to adjust to Boston.

And I am a Yankees fan
