With free agency approaching, Hamels is popular

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The fans in Phillies red cheered Cole Hamels Saturday.

And . . .

"The Yankee fans were really nice to me, for some odd reason," Hamels said after his two-inning spring debut. "Maybe they were having fun in the Tiki Bar."

Or maybe they were aware that Hamels is eligible for free agency next winter.

If the Yankees stick to their talk about getting their payroll under $189 million, a big Hamels contract wouldn't fit. Besides, as CBSSports.com colleague Jon Heyman wrote a couple of weeks back, the smart money says that Hamels eventually signs a new deal to stay with the Phillies.

Until he signs, though, fans in other cities can dream. They can tell him how much they want him, too.

"Fans prepare," Hamels said. "They know when things are coming up. When I was playing with Cliff [Lee] in 2009, I saw it all the time."

Rob, Your an idiot! Hes not leaving Philly. He has many Charity foundations here.He likes it here. He no problem with them negotating during the season. They pay everybody else. They will sign him no doubt. The Yankees have no shot at him. Nice try though. Keep hating!

Hamels will be back in Philadelphia next year and I bet the contract is done well before October.  He's made it very clear he wants to be a Phillie his entire career and the Phillies have every intention of providing a great contract to him.

The Phillies fans always have loved Hamels. Yes we are a very tough fan base, but we do all Love our Phillies and there winning, and fighting attitude game in and out. Alot of teams would love to have him in there pitching staff, but theres no way the Phils will let him go. The pitching is the strength of that team, and Amaro wont let them get away from him again like the Cliff Lee trade to land Halladay. But hey theres nothing about dreaming with him and the Yanks hooking up.

No odd reason here.  Cole Hamels will be a free agent after this season and the Yankees would be a great landing spot for him.  He'd fit nicely into the rotation behind CC and Pineda, not to mention Kuroda is already 37.  Hamels has to realize he'll have a better chance at winning another World Series with a team like the Yankees.  They have a much stronger lineup and supporting cast than the aging Phillies, who's window of opportunity will continue to close over the next few years.  After this season it'll be time for Hamels to leave that sinking ship and the obnoxious fan base who have never truly embraced him and given him the respect he deserves.
