Phils could trade Myers

At first glance, the Phillies' decision to sign Brad Lidge to a three-year, $37.5 million contract extension wouldn't seem to have any effect on Brett Myers, now that Myers is a starting pitcher (and a struggling starter who was recently sent to the minor leagues, at that).

But two sources familiar with the situation said today that Myers would much prefer to be a closer, something that's no longer even a long-term possibility in Philadelphia. The sources also said that the Phillies are open to trading Myers, who would still seem to have value despite his struggles this season.

While there has been talk in baseball that the Phillies have floated Myers name in their talks with Cleveland regarding C.C. Sabathia, an official familiar with those talks said Myers hadn't been offered because the Indians are interested in younger, cheaper players.

Myers became the Phillies closer when Tom Gordon was hurt last year, and he converted 21 of 24 save opportunities. The Phillies moved him back to the rotation after trading for Lidge, and he became their opening day starter. Myers began the year 3-9 with a 5.84 ERA and a National League-leading 24 home runs allowed, and he agreed to a temporary assignment to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

It's possible that Myers could benefit from a move back to the bullpen, because as a starter his velocity has been down.

For now, Myers is still starting in Triple-A, trying to get himself straightened out. He's scheduled to make his second start for the Iron Pigs Monday night.

Myers makes $8.5 million this year, and he's signed for $12 million for 2009.

Phils could trade Myers

The Phillies could trade Myers to a team that is looking for a closer. Myers is fairly expensive, but not more expensive than many other closers. The Phillies just signed Brad Lidge to a 3-year extension at $37.5 million, $12.5 per year. Myers is making $8.5 million this year and $12 million in '09, then he's a free agent. I think the Phillies should really look into trading Myers if he continues to struggle the rest of '08. They've got a bunch of good young arms in the farm system and could use some position players in the system. They could use an every day catcher with some pop, a 3rd baseman and a corner outfielder. The Brewers have a lot of talent in their farm system and could use some bullpen help. I know the Phillies probably wouldn't get a lot for him, but he was a very good reliever. ERA under 3 as a reliever and converted 21 of 24 opportunities.

If Gordon continues to struggle, I wouldn't be surprised to see him designated for assignment. He pitched well from mid-April to early June. But since Uggla hit the game ending GS in early June he hasn't been the same. I'd also expect Taguchi to be gone before the deadline, either traded or released. The Phillies could use another bat off the bench, preferrably a hit for average guy over a power guy. Dobbs has been a great pinch hitter, but they could use a solid right handed bat off the bench. If Myers can transition into the bullpen as the 8th inning guy, that'd be great. But I doubt that happens since he wants to close.

Phils could trade Myers

I've posted a few times on the Phillies board about moving Brett Myers.  That guy has a STRONG fan following, especially by many of the posters there whose opinions I value considerably.  I've felt for sometime now, that his trade value is not very high.  That sentiment was vigorously challenged on the board.  I thought the Phillies might try sending him to the Tigers for Dontrelle Willis.  That idea was also VIGOROUSLY refuted.  I was unaware of Willis' traditional end-of-season track record.

I think the Indians would want more than Myers for C.C. Sabathia, even as a rental.  And I didn't realize Myers' salary was that high, and especially for next year.  People on the Phillies board are calling for Myers to work late relief in place of Tom Gordon.  They like keeping Happ up as a starter, so where does that leave Gordon?
