Super Bowl, Arizona vs. Pittsburg, Who Do Ya Got?

Posted on: January 31, 2009 7:00 pm

Like many of you, we've had nearly 2 weeks to hear from various sports media about the strengths and weeknesses of both the Cardinals and the Steelers, injury reports and whatnot.  In just under 24 hours the game will begin.   Its time to make your pick.  Wipe off the crystal ball.  Play Nostradamus.   Who wins and why?   Have you made any bets on the game?

Personally, I'm going to stick with a bold Week 11 prediction that I made.   I'm taking the Cardinals in this game.  I realize that they are the underdog and that the odds are stacked against them.   The Steelers have the two biggest variables working in their favor, they have the top rated defense in the NFL and they have many more players that have been to the Super Bowl before and have won.  This is also probably the same reason that they are a 7 point favorite in this game.   I'm still picking the Cardinals.  I have very little money bet on this game, but all that I have bet has been on the Cards.

The two factors that I think may put the Cardinals over the top is that their Head Coach, Whisenhunt was recently a coach for the Steelers and pretty much knows their playbook and how they operate.  I think he can adequately prepare his team on what to expect from the Steelers on both sides of the ball.   The second factor is the quarterbacks.   From watching the interviews and seeing the body language, I see Kurt Warner as the more confident man going into this contest.   Although Ben Roethlisberger has been the quarterback of a Super Bowl winner, his performance in that game was not all that impressive and from listening to him, it seems to still be in his head.  Warner has lost a SB game and won one.   Without a good performance in this game out of Warner, the Cardinals don't stand a chance, but Warner I think can handle this kind of pressure better than Big Ben.

A few other things that I think may favor the Cardinals is that there is more pressure on the Steelers because they are the favorites.   Anquan Boldin appears to be heathier now and if Fitzgerald recieves special attention from the Steelers secondary, a healthy Boldin could possibly tear them up.   Steelers receiver Hines Ward doesn't appear to be 100 percent healthy which may take away or greatly reduce one of the better offensive weapons the Steelers have.  There are also rumors that Big Ben has some sore ribs.  I'm not saying that's going to affect his play, but then again, it might and it also may make his mid-section an early target for Cardinals pass rush.

My prediction.   Cardinals 27, Steelers 20.

Super Bowl, Arizona vs. Pittsburg, Who Do Ya Got?

I'll be another bandwagon jumper and root for the underdog Cardinals...I would like to see them win one, when do you think they will have this chance again?

And for Toxin 's comments

#1. There is a reason the Cardinals were 9-7 this season.

#2. There is a reason a 9-7 team has never won the Super Bowl.

answer for your two points...we've seen teams in the past that get on a roll and pull off the upsets...we've also have had a wildcard team win the big one so why can't a team 9-7 not win too

CARDS 35 - 24

Super Bowl, Arizona vs. Pittsburg, Who Do Ya Got?

I think it's funny how many people are jumping on the Arizona bandwagon for this game.

I'm going to keep it short and sweet with 2 very quick point.

#1. There is a reason the Cardinals were 9-7 this season.

#2. There is a reason a 9-7 team has never won the Super Bowl.

That reason is...they just aren't good enough.

Steelers 34 Cardinals 10

Super Bowl, Arizona vs. Pittsburg, Who Do Ya Got?

I've spent two weeks listening to how the spread offense trumps a three four D.  I just don't agree.

Plain and simple, defense wins championships.  I'm a Patriots fan who seen 3 superbowls won on D and one lost on O.

Think back to your days in minor sports D wins it.  plain and simple.

Super Bowl, Arizona vs. Pittsburg, Who Do Ya Got?

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a much more important edge than the Cardinals, and thats experience.  The Cards did in fact put up 30 + points on relatively good teams in the post season, however those teams weren't Pittsburgh.  No disrespect to Arizona, but after losing to New England by 40 in the snow I realized the Cardinals dont possess that toughness or grit that the Steelers do.  The Super Bowl would be a blow out if the game was played in Pittsburgh in the snow....think about it.  Congrats to the Cards for having such an impressive season and made props to fellow PITT grad Larry Fitzgerald but come Sunday the Pittsburgh Steelers will prove two very important and essential factors.....

1. DEFENSE wins Championships

2.Experience is everything

Get ready to watch history unfold ladies and gentlemen as we await the outcome of Super Bowl XLIII and the Steelers get one step closer to becoming the first ever 6X WORLD CHAMPS!!!!

Oh yeah.  Sorry.  The GAME...

Me thinks Sanantonio Holmes will have a banner day.  Me thinks the backside of Kurt Warner will be stained from the natural grass.  Me thinks Max Starks will have his hands full.

But ultimately, me thinks the Cardinals stars are aligned for a special run....

And I project that Mike Tomlison's eyes will never blink on the Steelers sidelines................Yell

My prediction is that the Super Bowl ad with Danica Patrick in the shower will be somewhat, perhaps even steamy..................And for those of you unfortunate enough to enjoy the balmy 60 degree weather down here in Florida, maybe that'll cheer ya up............Wink

Super Bowl, Arizona vs. Pittsburg, Who Do Ya Got?

Kid, I stumbled onto your blog when voting on Lazer's music blog. Nice job. I like your points about why you think Arizona will win.

I don't have any money on the game, but I think Arizona will win. I started thinking about a Pittsburgh - Arizona Super Bowl before the Steelers took the field against Baltimore, which didn't have a chance, in my opinion, in the AFC title game.

I know Pittsburgh has the No. 1 defense, but Arizona has hung 30+ points on three pretty good defenses. In conversations this week with family members who are Steelers fans (I'm not), I told them Pittsburgh won't be able to handle Arizona's receivers and Whisenhunt has an edge that I think many forget. You mention this as well.

I predict a 34-21 victory for Arizona.
