The Greatest College Team Needs 3 Running Backs!

In my entry, I acknowledged Ernie Davis of Syracuse and Heisman trophy winning fame. Yesterday, while watching my fill of NFL football, I saw a commercial for a movie coming out called "The Express" based on the life story of Ernie Davis. For those of you who don't know the story, Ernie was the first black to win the Heisman trophy. He was the first overall selection in the NFL draft in 1962, but was diagnosed and later died from Leukemia, at the age of 23. The reviews I've seen says this is a true sports movie, and that is why I recommend it to anyone not familiar with Mr. Davis. Enjoy.

The Greatest College Team Needs 3 Running Backs!

I noticed that most of the backs being selected are from the modern era, and rightly so. I'm going to list my top three of all time, and then give you all a list of some old timers that dominated the game in their day. Enjoy!

1. Barry Sanders, Oklahoma State. The best I've ever seen. This kid from Kansas played behind Thurman Thomas, but when he got on the field, magic happened.

2. Ron Dayne, Wisconsin. He punished the defenses he faced, and his forward lean picked up first down after first down. A true workhorse who deserved his Heisman Trophy.

3. Tony Dorsett, Pittsburgh. No top three list can exclude this man. I can see his blue tear away jersey now.

Let's not forget their predecessors: Doc Blanchard, Glenn Davis and Pete Dawkins of the Army. Notre Dames four horsemen. Doak Walker from SMU. John David Crow from Texas A&M. Ernie Davis and Jim Brown from Syracuse. Ohio St. had Howard Cassady and Archie Griffin.Oklahoma with Steve Owens, Billy Sims, Joe Washington and Billy Vessels. USC with OJ, Mike Garrett, Charles White, Anthony Davis and Marcus Allen. Nebraska with Mike Rozier and Lawrence Phillips. Georgia with Frank Sinkwich and Hershel Walker. WOW.

The Greatest College Team Needs 3 Running Backs!

This is by far my favorite position in football!

I would have to say that #1 all-time would be Earl Campbell

#2 Herschell Walker

#3 Barry Sanders

The Greatest College Team Needs 3 Running Backs!

This is one of the hardest positions, if we were voting for 10 RBs we'd still leave GREAT ones out.

Hershel Walker 11, Tony Dorsett 6, Earl Campbell 4, Barry Sanders 4,
Marcus Allen 3, Marshall Faulk 3, Archie Griffin 3, Bo Jackson 3, Charles White 2, Reggie Bush 1, Ron Dayne 1, Darren McFadden 1.

Thanks to everyone for your participation and kind words.

The Greatest College Team Needs 3 Running Backs!

YLG, You beat me to the punch. There is no way to list all of the worthy running backs for this list. So I will provide my picks with the rest of the Top 10 and leave out the sickeningly long HM list... LL this has been great, and in truth I look forward to it every Tuesday. As it comes to a close - (only a few weeks left) I just wanted to say thanks.

  1. Herschel Walker (UGA Bulldogs) - Best ever.  1st Team All American in 1980, 1981, 1982. Heisman Trophy in 1982. Unstoppable.
  2. Marshall Faulk (SDSU Aztecs) - Best to not win the Heisman. 1st Team AA 1992, 1993. Dual threat to run and catch...
  3. Reggie Bush (USC Trojans) - Electric on the field. He was a threat to score everytime he touched the ball. He literally ripped peoples ankles off as they tried to tackle him.
  4. Earl Campbell (Texas Longhorns) - The Tyler Rose. Bruising, that's the only way to describe him. He would just as soon run through you as past you...
  5. Archie Griffin (OSU Buckeyes) - How do you argue with 2 Heismans???
  6. Barry Sanders (OSU Cowboys) - He was an absolute whirling dervish...Hard to find and harder to bring down.
  7. Bo Jackson (Auburn Tigers) - Amazing to watch.
  8. Ron Dayne (Wisconsin Badgers) - Hard to watch but again hard to bring down...
  9. Charles White (USC Trojans) - Tailback U? Yes but Ricky Bell and Marcus Allen were not on par with the rest of these...
  10. LaDainian Tomlinson (TCU Horned Frogs) - You could tell he would be playing on Sundays...

I said I wouldn't do an HM list but I had to put in a tick for the best from my schools and they weren't worthy of the TOP10, so - HM Rueben Mayes (WSU Cougars) and Luke Staley (BYU Cougars)
