college qb's

My gut tells me to say it; so I will.

Tommie Frazier, Nebraska   This 4 year starter won 2 national championships, and his run in the Fiesta Bowl against Spurriers Gators was my favorite football moment of all time. Wasn't Bob Stoops the Def Coordiator on that Florida team?  Nebraska, lead by Tommie Frazier lit them up for 62. He might have won a third national championship had Nebraska not been upset by Texas in the Big XII title game.

Roger Staubach, Navy. This Heisman Trophy winner continued on into the NFL and was also a genuine role model.

BYU quarterbacks have a long lineage of greatness, but in todays arguments, they were products of a system. I don't completely buy that because Steve Young and Ty Detmer were unstoppable.

USC has had some great ones, most recently Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart.

Texas Tech and Hawaii have been rattling NCAA record books, but those again are systemic accomplishments.

The Greatest College Team Needs 2 QBs!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thes two selections came to me very quickly. I am sure others will have differing opinions ( it is a vote), but my two are:

  • Passer -- Peyton Manning -- Tennessee born and bred to be a quarterback and a terrific one indeed
  • Runner -- Turner Gill -- Nebraska

My runner is also my favorite player of all time...
Vince Young - The most dominant player in Rose Bowl history. Oklahoma State still remembers him taking over the second half of the 05 game. IMO he was the greatest QB in college history & w/o a doubt the best player to not win a Heisman. Had the voting taken place after the NC he would have won it in overwhelmingly. Very competitive; he would let his team lose.

Pocket passer...
Doug Flutie - Graduated as the NCAAs all-time passing leader. 3rd in Heisman voting as a junior & won as a senior. Everyone remembers his long pass to beat Miami. Was only 5'9" but a heck of a player.
