Posted on: July 15, 2008 11:24 am

Only players who played in 1970 or later will be eligible. Each Tuesday we will begin voting on a new position; make your vote in bold. Feel free to elaborate on why you voted for the player you did. Please vote only once per position. If there is a tie both players will be listed.

This week we will vote for Punter. Cast a vote for a Punter who graduated no earlier than 1970.

BTW: It seems like the participation on this blog has gone down, so if you know any members who may be interested; I wondered if you could do me a favor and let them know about it.

The Greatest College Team Needs A Punter!

I knowRay Guy (P, SS, Backup QB) will win but if you look at the punting aspect only...

#1 - Brad Maynard (Ball State) The only two-time 1st team All-American at punter other than someone punting in thin Rocky Mountain air. When you can be named the Division I First-Team All-American twice for a school like Ball State, you are the greatest!!!
#2 - Todd Sauerbrun  (West Virginia) In a game against Nebraska, he had 9 punts over 50 yards with his longest being 90 yards!  Had 32 punts over 50 yards in his career. He holds the all-time NCAA career mark at 46.3 yards per punt!!!
#3 - Reggie Roby (Iowa) Had a leg kick reminiscent of Juan Marichal in baseball. Averaged 48.1 as a Senior.
#4 - Tom Tupa (Ohio State) Had a higher average than Ray Guy and started at QB for the Buckeyes!!!
#5 - Ray Guy (Southern Miss) Fantastic all-around athlete. Had 18 picks as a SS. Could throw a baseball 98mph. Oh yeah, he could punt too. Only punter in College Football HOF. No one punted the ball as high as Guy!!!

The Greatest College Team Needs A Punter!

Yankee Russel did more place kicking in college than he punted.  I remember being a Razorback fan.  Also, I know Ray Guy is going to win this thing but it seems a lot of folks are basing there vote on what he did in the Pros and not in college.  A 42.4 average isn't that outstanding if you ask me.

The Greatest College Team Needs A Punter!

My vote goes to Ray Guy, the best Punter of all time. Also the only Punter in the Hall of Fame.

The Greatest College Team Needs A Punter!

Well I am sure Ray Guy will win this in a landslide so since Livin Large complained about voting for a Sooner for the last position I will cast my ballot for a former Longhorn. Russell Erxleben, even though he is now an ex-con. He also was a place kicker who is tied for the record for the longest field goal in NCAA history at 67 yards. He was drafted in the first round by the NFL.

I just hate going with the crowd if I can avoid it.  Keep up the great work Livin Large.

The Greatest College Team Needs A Punter!

Anytime you have an award named after you, you must be considered the best at that position.

My vote goes to Ray Guy!

The Greatest College Team Needs A Punter!

University of Baylor --- Dan Sepulveda... all you have to do is check out youtube and see the way he hits... not only a strong leg, but can cover the kicks by himself... not that this team will punt a lot... but how many of these guys play special teams???
