Mark Teixeira Rumors: Monday

8:07pm: SI.com's Jon Heyman says baseball people expect Teixeira to sign before Thursday.  Rival execs see the Red Sox as the favorite.  The Orioles and Nationals remain engaged; the Yankees are the wild card.  Heyman says the Yanks would only want to spend slightly more than the $161MM they committed to C.C. Sabathia.

7:20pm: Roch Kubatko of MASN Online learned from multiple sources that the Nationals "have sweetened their proposal to Teixeira, offering him an eight-year deal worth $178-184MM."  He's been told they're willing to go nine years and there's been talk of ten.

9:02am: ESPN's Buster Olney sums up the Mark Teixeira situation in his blog today.  Olney says Teixeira's "leverage has probably maxed out, and now only runs the risk of being diminished."  The status of the involved teams:

  • Angels: out of the running.
  • Yankees: Olney says they initially made an offer that was markedly less than other teams, and have since withdrawn it.
  • Orioles: Olney says they're at seven years, $140MM (as opposed to the $140-150MM range we've seen reported).  Offer has not been upgraded.
  • Nationals: eight years, $160MM based on published reports.  Olney is not sure whether the Nats have raised this offer but heard from confidants of "one high-ranking executive" that they have not.  Olney's Nationals sources expressed pessimism about their chances.
  • Joe Posnanski: out of the bidding.
  • Red Sox: Were willing to do $170-175MM when they flew out to meet Teixeira and Scott Boras; "might be nudged to $180MM."  We know that the Red Sox did not pull their offer, but haven't spoken to Boras since Thursday night.
  • Olney wonders: will Boras shoot for $190MM with the intent of topping Derek Jeter's $189MM?  If he tops it, Boras would secure the third-largest contract in MLB history for Teixeira (with his Alex Rodriguez deals taking the first two slots).

Mark Teixeira Rumors: Monday

Dear Tex

The economy is in chaos, regular folks salaries are down, union wages are in trouble, real estate values way down.  Unlike Michael Douglas line in the movie Wall Street, "greed is not good".   It's time for baseball player sallaries to come back more in line with the average Joe.  In short, these are hard times.  Mr. Boras needs to stop trying to squeeze every last nickle and contract edge for you.  Mark, make up your mind, sign a contract and put this behind you.

Mark Teixeira Rumors: Monday

If dude was gonna sign with the O's or Nats for less, it would be a done deal.  Its typical for Boras to work MLB patsies to get top dollar from a real contender.  He'll sign with the Bosox by Christmas...

I thought thsi guy was supposed to have made his decision by Christmas. IMO Boras is making this harder on Tex and his family,  the money is on the table, now he just needs to decide, do you want to be a contender or just content?

Mark Teixeira Rumors: Monday

If Boston's deal is still on the table he'd be crazy not to take it.  Does he really want to play in Baltimore or DC?  I don't think so.

Mark Teixeira Rumors: Monday

Teixeira is a good player, but he's not worth $20 million a year.

If a guy who is going to hit around .300, 35 HR, 110+ RBI, and be a gold glove caliber 1B isn't worth $20 million. then how is Derek Jeter worth the $21.6 million he got last year.

Mark Teixeira Rumors: Monday

If he wanted to win a championship, he would have signed with the Sox already. It's all about the money. Sucking every last penny out of a contract has nothing to do with wanting to win.

I just don't get it either. Teixeira is a good player, but he's not worth $20 million a year.

I think that teixieira should take the deal from the red sox if he goes to the nationals what chance does he have to win a world series at least the red sox will be there for an other short and most if them are his age if he cares about the game and not so much the money he will sign with the red sox. if it the money then he will play for the National.
