Angels Have Interest In Dye

Posted on: January 12, 2009 7:47 pm

The Los Angeles Angels have interest in Chicago White Sox outfielder Jermaine Dye, Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

According to a major-league scout, the Angels are the latest team to express interest in acquiring Dye now that the Mark Teixeira ship has set sail to New York. Unlike the talks with the Cincinnati Reds that stalled during the Winter Meetings, the Sox and Angels actually have a fit, Cowley wrote.

Cowley speculates that the White Sox would want Chone Figgins in return. Figgins could play third base and lead off for Chicago.

Cowley also notes that the Angels have a surplus of outfielders, but the Angels want to add protection in the lineup for Vladimir Guerrero and Torii Hunter.

Cowley's source also said the Angels do not like the rest of the free-agent outfield market and do not want to be pawns in the on-going Manny Ramirez saga.

The Angels are not one of the teams listed on Dye 19s no-trade list, Cowley writes.

Angels Have Interest In Dye

I am not so sure if I am in favor of this trade for the Angels.  The outfield is crowded enough as it is, and adding another elderly player in Jermaine Dye just does not make sense to me.  If the Angels are serious about adding protection in their lineup and are ok with making the outfield ever more crowded, then they should go after Manny Ramirez.  Chone Figgins is also very valuable to this team at the leadoff position and has a fairly good glove at third base.  While he may not put up the numbers that Dye does, he does a lot for the chemistry of the team.

Thats a no brainer for the Halos.  At 31, Figgins seems to be on a downslope, and has missed time the past 2 years.  Even when healthy, he is still purely one dimensional, and is a serious power vacuum at 3B.  Dye, on the other hand is 3 years older and doesn't appear to be slowing down.  You can still pencil him in for 30 jacks and 90 RBI.  I know they don't exactly NEED another outfielder, but Dye could possibly move in to first, or give them options to make a deal for a !B.  Long or short term, I don't see Kendry Morales as much of an option...
