Ben Shpigel of the New York Times snagged a few quotes from Omar Minaya, who spoke on the Tim Redding conference call today.  Minaya said Pedro Martinez is still an option for the Mets, but they're looking at other guys.  The implication is that they'll only consider Pedro if they fail to sign Derek Lowe, Oliver Perez, or Randy Wolf.  It's probably time for Pedro to move on.

Could he stay in New York?  River Ave. Blues discusses the possibility of Martinez signing with the YankeesWe know Pedro has narrowed his choices to two teams in each league, and may have rejected a $7MM offer from an AL club.  The Diamondbacks could be another possibility, but the Marlins will pass.

I agree.  I'd like to bring him back because he's great in the clubhouse, but we have to win and win now.  I'd rather give Wolf a shot in the rotation.  We really need a second lefty anyway.

This is a smart move. Pedro has been injury prone the past few seasons and killed the Mets when the failed in September because they lacked a true 4th or 5th starter.

Mets Unlikely To Re-Sign Pedro Martinez

Thats the problem.  They need a solid 5th starter.  Pedro won't be much use on the DL, where he seems to languish often these days.  When healthy, he's barely serviceable.  I wouldn't gamble on him.  Better to grab a few minor league free agents at a fraction of the price.  If they come up with the 2009 version of Armando Gallaraga, thats more than you'd get from Pedro...

Send him to the Braves. The Braves added Lowe, the Japanesee pitcher, Vasquez to their pitiching line up to join jurrjen. We need a solid 5th starter.

I think the Mets could keep Pedro at a reasonable price and it would be totally worth it. He'd be an intimidating 4th or 5th starter, and he wouldn't be pushed as much if he were in the ace role. He's still got plenty and he's a veteran strikeout guy. I think it's worth a shot. Come on Omar, do it!

Agreed, it would be a big gamble.  Pedro's best is behind him; if the Mets to sign him, I would rather see him in a relief roll.

Mets Unlikely To Re-Sign Pedro Martinez

I think it is a gamble either way with Pedro. His recent injuries however have to outweigh his past performances. If we weren't coming off of 2 huge meltdown seasons I'd be more inclined to sign him, however, we need to move forward and wish Pedro the best.
