Yankees search for help in the outfield

Posted on: December 29, 2009 11:30 am

The Yankees have been searching for outfield help, but the New York Daily News reports that because they missed out on Mark DeRosa does not mean the club will seek expensive options (like Matt Holliday or Jason Bay).

A Yankee official told the Daily News (before the DeRosa deal was made), "No chance on Matt Holliday, no chance on Jason Bay.... Zero. None. Underline it."

The Yankees are thinking of much cheaper free agent optionslike former Blue Jay and Cub Reed Johnson or Jerry Hairston Jr. Or, Brett Gardner could have a chance to compete for a role there. They will also troll the trade market.

It's looking like the Yanks are going to make one year "only" offers to: Scott Podsednik, Xavier Nady or Johnny Damon.  All for under $5 million.  The first one to take the offer is the last move of the yanks.  I think Nick Johnson was a signing made to be insurance against all of those deals falling through.

If the Yankees are in fact done for the year, they are still the team to beat.

The pressure is exclusively on the Red Sox to trade for either Gonzalez or sign Beltre.

Next year the Yanks will pursue Carl Crawford and perhaps Cliff Lee.  Those seem to be the most likely moves.

The Yankees should hold out for Carl Crawford because the Rays won't be able to afford him.  Jermaine Dye is a great fit for the Yankees if they give him a 1 year deal worth 7 to 8 million.  Dye wants to win and what better team is going to give him the opportunity.

Have you actually looked at Holiday's numbers? His OBP, his steals, his HR and his career BA? He fits the team with his numbers and attitude. He would make a phenominal replacement in the now vacant 2 spot and he can actually play the field. It's a NO brainer. Sign Holiday and solve left fields issues (lack of a throwing arm) for the next 5 years. When he's done playing the field he move into a nice DH role. Why be cheap now?

The Yanks need to bring Nady back.  He know NYC having also played for the Mets and won't break the bank.

Spend the money, get Matt Holiday. You can save money in future years. Yankees need at least one good slugging outfielder. Otherewise they will not have enough power to repeat, with Damon and Matsui gone.

Doboy, That is not going to happen. While I would like to see Jermaine Dye in our OF for a year at $5/6 million, that is simply not realistic. A guy who averages around 30hr/100rbi's is not going to sign a deal in that range simply because he does not have to....even in a deflated market. Although I do see some hope in trying 2years at $20Mil (the same deal I feel Damon is worth and should be offered). However, Byrd does make sense at 3yr/18 million as he has proved himself to be a quality OF'er and his numbers have steadily picked up over the last 3 years in particular. He is 29, dead smack in the middle of his prime, and has now added the consistency factor, increased power numbers and does not have any glaring weaknesses. His Avg, OBP, SLG won't knock you over but they will be light years ahead of Gardner/Hairston and, to be honest, Holiday is a nice player but not worth having to struggle with the combination of Scott Boras and his deamnds.....overpaying on another long term deal as he tries to set the market. Let him stay in the NL with Cardinals.

We can even give Dye a one year deal for 5-6 million and have that much more to spend next season.  Let Boston blow their load on Gonzalez.  They are getting older than the Yanks.

You are  nuts.  You have Maurer possibly available next season, along with King Felix available.  Why not make due with Byrd and save the resources for next year?

The Yankees should definately get Matt Holliday. Spend the money now, because they won't get another chance later. Don't blow it like they did on Carlos Beltran. They can save their money next year. Right now they need a big hitting outfielder, and Matt Holliday fits in perfectly. Cashman is an idiot if he does not get him.
