Tom Powers of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports the Twins will likely trade for a new closer now that Joe Nathan is out for the season.

To avoid having Nathan being startled by rumors, Minnesota general manager Bill Smith told the injured closer of his intentions to acquire a possible closer.

San Diego's Heath Bell has been rumored, and the Twins are looking at Toronto, where Kevin Gregg, Scott Downs and Jason Frasor are competing for the Jays' closer gig.

"The past two weeks, we've been working on contingencies," Smith told the Pioneer Press.

The one benefit of trading for Frasor or Bell is that nobody has to change rolls in the pen.  While Frasor may not be better than Rauch of Guerrier, you dont lose Gueirrer's ability to pitch multiple innings if a starter goes down and you don't lose Rauch's ability to come in an get some important outs in the 7th or 8th inning.  To me it makes the most sense if the Twins either trade for a closer or use Liriano as a closer.  Adding a warm body to the back of the pen keeps the cohesion that exists currently.

I don't see the value in Jason Frasor. He is not any better than Rauch or Gutierrez on the Twins competing now, an additional arms as insurance maybe the thoughts here. But if they trade for Heath Bell then this will consider a real Closer, the Twins has tons of talent in waiting so i think they will get it done. Joe Nathan need total of 2 years to total recover, so make more sense as the Twins is contending now. Not to mention they are in the new stadium and need to make sure they have a chance in the Playoff.

Twins are looking at Toronto, where , and are competing for the Jays' closer gig.The logical choice would be Frasor,as Downs is much better as a set up man.The Jays signed Gregg for 2 years so they appear to have confidence in him.Frasor has been on the trading block all winter.
