What's RIGHT With Sean Avery

The NHL needs Sean Avery. In fact the NHL needs more Sean Averys. It's a shame how Gary Bettman and the ‘powers that be’ in the league offices have watered down a once great sport, and turned it into a faceless second tier league. It's an even bigger shame that I have to play NHL 94 on my old Sega Genesis to be able to relive a time when the NHL was actually an exciting league filled with character. Back then players didn't play nice, and players didn't always say the right thing (or the nice thing). You acted up, you got dealt with ON THE ICE, not by the league office suspending you for harmless comments or changing the rules so that bumping into someone is a roughing penalty. The NHL has turned into a joke of a league. Where are the Tie Domis, the Bob Proberts, the Wayne Gretzkys, the Mark Messiers, etc.? I’ll tell you where they are…The Proberts get suspended for ticky tack reasons, and the Gretzkys are scoring hat-tricks on the Country Music Channel....er, wait I mean the Versus network (ironically, if it was on the Country Music Channel they might have more viewers actually). Watering down the league to get rid of violence, bad behavior, and superstars is KILLING a once great league. The NHL of today reminds me of the world of the future in the classic American movie Demolition Man starring Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes....A sanitized world where any comment deemed slightly inappropriate is illegal, and every action that stirs emotion is suppressed. Which brings me back to Sean Avery....the last of a dying bred. Feel whatever you want about him, but at least you feel something. How many other players in the league can you say that about? How many players are exciting, have a personality or are dangerous? None. The fall of Avery is the final nail in the coffin of what was once a great league. A league where games were wars, and exciting, diverse personalities were aplenty. I miss that league, and I'll root for Sean Avery to the bitter end.

So you agree that hockey is a sissified joke. It's a sad state of affairs if the entire league is motivated by corporate sponsorship, but I guess that's just the world we live in.
