A friend of mine once told me that a band is only as good as its drummer. I dont know if this is true, but I tend to notice a drummers skill before anything else when I listen to music. Being a Rush geek, I set the bar pretty high. These are my favorite drummers:

Neil Peart

John Bonaham

Keith Moon

Alex Van Halen

Dave Lombardo-Slayer

Nicko McBrain-Iron Maiden

Charlie Benante-Anthrax

Chris Adler-Lamb Of God

Igor Calvera-Sepultura

Dave Grohl

This is'nt a poll, just a place to post opinions. Cheers!

Greatest drummers in Rock

I like Neil ,I think what makes a good drummer is one who can Write music

Like my favorite Phil Collins of Genesis

I guess you could add Dave Grohl and Don Henley to that list, although both moved on to other instuments and are far better song writers than drummers.

You can't bring up Phil Collins without mentioning Chester Thompson.  One of the coolest things I ever saw was Phil and Chester playing in tandem at the beginning of I Don't Care Anymore.  I saw Russ Kunkel and Joe Vitale do a similar thing playing for Joe Walsh, except they passed drumsticks to each other between beats (but it was a much simpler beat than what Chester and Phil did).  Martin Chambers of the Pretenders had a pretty cool stunt too.  He would pour water on top of his drum heads.  The splashing with colored lights behind him had a stunning effect.

Peart is my favorite, followed by Carl Palmer, but one of the best I've seen is Aynsley Dunbar.  The list of bands he played in is a who's who of rock history...Jimi chose Mitch Mitchell by way of coin toss over Dunbar...no big deal to him, as he found work with John Mayall & Bluesbreakers, his own band (The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation), Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Journey, Sammy Hagar, Jefferson Starship, Whitesnake, Jeff Beck, Black Sabbath and others.

Frank Beard from ZZ Top is another good one.

Greatest drummers in Rock

I think Mike Portnoy and Virgil Donati deserve a spot on this list as well.  Terry Bozzio and Jeff Brockman from Cairo are two more drummers that make you want to practice for hours or burn your set- whichever is easiest.

Greatest drummers in Rock

I have been a musician for about 17yrs playing drums and guitar. I have to agree with you about the band only bieng as good as the drummer. I have had the good fortune to see alot of bands and play in a couple and I have say that it is very hard work! Tempo is just one element to playing any instrument. I have to take my hat off to all the practicing musicians on this thread and I really enjoy all your thoughts and comments. As far as all time faves, *Peart-Rush *Dennis Chambers(jazz) *Buddy Miles(jazz), *Stewart Copeland-Police *Danny Carey-Tool *David Randall Silveria-former Korn drummer. I know that there is many many more that I will remember once I post this and I apologize. Thatnks for posting! Great thead!

Greatest drummers in Rock

Being a drummer in various bands and playing for 23 years before hanging up my sticks,  I say this is an awesome idea for a blog entry.

Great list you've got going Piranha, Ive always loved Igor Cavalera and the tribal roots he expresses in his playing. He is one of a kind, and a massively talented drummer.

Charlie Benante is another one of my favorites, although his insane foot speed made it impossible for me to duplicate some of his licks. LOL

During my time behind the drum kit  I was actually compared to the late great John Bonham by my bandmates, which really took me aback.  Bonham was a legend who I admired from age 10, so the idea that I was even mentioned in the same sentence as him sat very well with me.

I have to mention a few of the really unsung drummers that were also inspirations of mine.

Tom Hunting - Exodus

Glenn Evans - Nuclear Assault

Chris Nail - Exhorder

Greatest drummers in Rock

I am in total agreement with your list as well as the additions of Buford, White and Ginger Baker and of course the amazingly thunderous Danny Carey.  A few more I would throw in there would be Mitch Mitchell, Gavin Harrison, Vinnie Paul, Carl Palmer, Gavin Harrison, Jason Bittner and Rev. Of course Peart is and always will be my Favorite Drummer in all Music.

Great Blog Piranha.

I am going to go with Neil Peart, I have seen most of the list and Peart is the only one that can make me just watch the drum set in the group. Hypnotic is the only way I can explain it.
