My 2008 midseason MLB awards
If standings did not exist in the MLB, the race would be Lance Berkman and Chipper Jones. But that's obviously not the case. Chase Utley is the leader of a first place team. He is putting up power numbers that are the best for a second baseman since Rogers Hornsby. He is playing the important defensive position of second base where there are almost no power hitters. He plays hard. He deserves it now.
Others deserving in order: Chipper Jones, Lance Berkman, Dan Uggla, Hanley Ramirez, Albert Pujols.
Sorry if you think I'm falling for the good story. But Josh Hamilton is having super human season. 95 r.b.i in the first half?!!?. There's still a game left in the first half. In my opinon, he is having the best season I can remember after Barry Bonds. He wins it over two teammates.
N.L. Cy Young
This is a two man race, no offense to Brandon Webb. But Tim Lincecum and Edinson Volquez. Lincecum wins by a little. He has a great e.r.a (2.66), he has a lot of strikeouts (126, tops in the league), he is a stopper ( 9-1 after a Giants' loss), and he wins for a terrible team who can't win without him ( 10-2 when the Giants are 26-49 when anybody else starts. That's very good.
A.L. Cy Young
This is a four man race between Roy Halladay, Justin Duchscherer, Cliff Lee, and Mariano Rivera. First out is Rivera. He is having an incredible year, but he has not been the most valuable pitcher. Lee is out next. He has a sparkling record, but his e.r.a is rising consistintly and the Indians are terrible. Now it's Halladay and Duchscherer. And my first suprise selection. It's a tie!!!!!! Duchscherer has 1.76 era. Any starter with that deserves a Cy Young. But Halladay is doing things people haven't been doing since the early 1900's. Anytime he is on the mound, he is a threat for a complete game. He now has 7. And 11 wins with a 2.71 e.r.a.
Others deserving: Cliff Lee, Mariano Rivera, Francisco Rodriguez, Joe Nathan
