The Mighty Mississippi River

As some might know by reading the blog from redoverred, I work on the mighty mississippi river. Been doing it for quite some time now. I was on a thread a while back listening to people argue about whether the flooding in Iowa is worse than Katrina down in the Gulf. Well while I have my opinion, I do not want to get into that again.

It is amazing to me though, just doing some dailt things, like hooking up our potable water line. It is hard to imagine that, just a couple weeks ago, it was under water. I was having my Deckhands flush the line and it was definately some of the good ol' mississippi mud that came out at first.

Cruising on the Upper Mississippi River and looking at all the houses that were effected is crazy. Most of the houses on the river bank, were built on stilts after the flood of '93. Those that were built on stilts were fine, but the ones that were not are ruined.

Ihave a Deckhand that owns a home in Quincy, and I had to get him home, because during the flood his home was destroyed, and his wife sent to the hospital. Prayers with you Quint......

It is just amazing to look at the aftermath of natures fury.

The Mighty Mississippi River

Thanks for that hawg,

yeah my boat is stuck in Alton, IL right now, because we can't get under the Bridges in St. Louis. River is still at 27+ ft on the gage today. The ACOE says it will be dropping really fast over the next 2 weeks though. So hopefully the flooding, and damage are coming to an end so that people can start coming back.

I also thank you for your kind words in regards to my Crew. Most of us are from other areas of the country, but thank you. My deckhand that was really effected returns to work today.

Roger that Capt. See ya on the two whistle, safe journey.

The Mighty Mississippi River

Well Gang,

The folks living on the banks f the mississippi river, might not be out of the woods yet. I was looking over the river forcast for the next seven days, and according to NOAA, he river is coming back up again.

Now the river had receeded back to somewhat normal levels, but with all the rain going on up north of areas like St. Louis, we might see the river rise again. It should, however, not be nearly as tragic as it was the last several weeks.

Trying to call home while I'm at work is rough, apparently the flooding and storms that have hit around here took out a couple towers.

I just hope that the rains stop eventually, so that these areas can begin to repair and rebuild.
