Celtics and 70 wins?

Posted on: December 16, 2008 2:52 pm

A while back a poll was started asking the question can the Celtics win 70 games this year.  At the time I was amazed at the negative response to their ability to pull this off.  It seemed the world outside of Boston was not willing to give the returning NBA Champions any credit, let alone believe that they could improve.  Instead, it was a barrage of they are getting old, the team chemistry will erode, Doc Rivers got lucky.  The remarks as a whole were very surprising, far beyond the usual team bashing that goes with any thread posted here.

So here we are 23-2, a winning percentage of 92%.  That's on pace to win 75 games.  Best start in franchise history, and there have been some great teams here.  The big three are performing at the same level as last year, and players like Rondo, Tony Allen, Perkins all seem to be expanding their role.  In short, the total game of the Celtics is better than it was a year ago.  So what do people say now?  70 wins?  A whole lot can still happen as the season carries on, but what many on this board considered not likely, is seeming more and more like a reasonable outcome.

As a side note, rumors are flying about a possible addition of Stephon Marbury.  A successful assimilation of him into their system, just could be the tipping point.

Celtics and 70 wins?

As for winning another NBA championship -- I don't see anyone who can beat them in a 7 game series.

As long as the Celtics get 4 games in Boston, they will prevail.  Looks like that is a given, espically when they get win number 70.  Just a few games shy of the all time NBA consecutive win streak.  Will be a nice stat if they can grab it.  Nice to see the Celtics back on top, was starting to lose interest in basketball.  Tough when your team can't capture the crown.

Celtics and 70 wins?

It's entirely possible for them to get to 70 wins this season providing they don't have any serious injuries and if they can sustain their high level of play (lot of ifs).  The Celtics need to make sure they don't run out of gas for their playoff run since 70 wins isn't the ultimate goal.  As for winning another NBA championship -- I don't see anyone who can beat them in a 7 game series.

Celtics and 70 wins?

Tough game last night, but yet another win for the books.  Though Atlanta is not a great team, they seem to play the Celtics tough.  Despite records and players, it was Atlanta that gave the Celtics the toughest time in the playoffs last season.

Cavs are a good team but they are going to need more depth if they want a title.  LeBron is the show.  Picking up one more top tear player could turn them around over night.  Case and point, look at what Garnett and Allen did for the Celtics.  Now granted there are other good players on each team that make big contributions, but basketball more than other sport is dominated by the big names.  Football requires a team, both D and O.  Baseball, you can pitch around a big hitter.  Pitchers only pitch one day.  B-ball, you have a guy in your face every game, running your butt up and down the court.  The game is geared for the super star.

Marbury.  He is an issue, no sugar coating that.  Allegedly, he and Garnett are close, and the mentality is Garnett's influence can keep him straight, so to speak.  The talent is there, question is, can a new atmosphere bring some focus.  Can't predict, it's a gamble, question is, do the pros outweigh the cons?

Celtics and 70 wins?

They own the Fourth Quarter so long as the game is close in the end they win.

Celtics and 70 wins?

I watched the Bulls season when they had in 95-96 and watched the lakers go for it a few years after that. It's too hard. I don't think they can do it. Teams will figure out what these guys do and will counter it. And there are so many haters in the world that even a teams with dismal records would try to stop that from happening if it were close and they had to play the Celtics. They would go all out just to beat the Celtics. It would be like a playoff game for them. I'm not saying it isn't possible but just very very hard.

You don't want Marbury.  PERIOD.
