Clutch's Mets 2008 Awards!

Posted on: September 18, 2008 6:38 pm
Here are my awards for the 2008 Mets..Feel free to disagree with any of them.
MVP: Carlos Delgado - no doubt in my mind is this guy the MVP of this team..He is the MAIN reason we are still in the race today..He seems to come up with big hit after big hit and leads the team in homeruns and RBI

Most Valuable Pitcher: Johan Santana - It's pretty amazing that this guy only has 13 wins heading in to tonight..He should have 20+ yet this bullpen blew leads for him over and over again..With a 2.70 ERA..This guy is the stud on the Mets staff.

Clutchest player: Carlos Delgado - Here is another award for Carlos,  This one being the most clutch award..Again he seems to always come up with the big hit and is playing big down the stretch.

Best Defensive Player: David Wright - I'm not sure how many of you watch Baseball Tonight. But David Wright is on there almost every night with a great play.  This guy gives it his all.

Best Reliever: Billy Wagner - Even though this guy has been hurt, he still has to be the Mets best reliever this season...Not many relievers on the Mets squad this year have been good...So Billy takes this award..

Young Player to come through: Mike Pelfrey - I thought he has earned an award this year..He has really come through...He is now a big game pitcher and will be a great one to come.

Those are my awards...Disagree with any that you want to.

Clutch's Mets 2008 Awards!

Beltran is the best defensive player this year.  Saved numerous runs for this team.  Wright made a lot of spectacular plays but he also made some crucial errors down the stretch.

Sorry for the late comment - just surfing thru the blog now.

Clutch's Mets 2008 Awards!

Good post, Clutch.

For the most part, I agree with you. MVP, Delgado.

As much as I would LOVE David Wright to be NL MVP, think of it this way. If Pujols took his place in the Mets lineup, would they be better or worse?

Delgado, on the other hand, has finally shown us his NORMAL abilities. He's been hot, yes, but really, look at his career stats. This is a normal year for him! After his last season, and his early performance this year, thank goodness they have him.

I'm Glad Pelfrey has finally come into his own, at least for now. He's still young, and seems to be getting better.

Best reliever, tho? If there has EVER been an award deserving of a "VACANT-No award given" it's this category. Yes, Wagner was probably the best for us, but he blew important games early in the season, and for the elite status he supposedly commands, as many blown saves as he had.....I can't give him an award. It just seemed like when the game mattered, he blew it.

Best Defensive player? Absolutely David Wright. However, responding to the person who posted that beltran is the best defensive OFer, I'm not sure he's the best, but when we first got him, I rememebr thinking about how many balls he got to and caught vs our previous 10 or so years of OFers who allowed SO many balls to drop in, both in front and over their heads. Cameron was decent, but Beltran has been consistantly very good. He never looks like he's running full out, reminicent of Kevin McReynolds a couple of decades ago, but he makes the plays. BUT, David Wright, at the hot corner? Fielding percentage wise, BOTH have improved over their Gold Glove winning year last season, bu tYou're right Clutch, Wright is on TOP PLAYS at least 2 or 3 times a week.

Best Bench player perhaps? Tatis. .297, 92 games, would have about 20 Hrs and 80 RBIs if he played a full season at his current pace, but for about 3 weeks, he must have won 2 games a week by himself for the Mets.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for the great post Clutch!

David Wright should win NL MVP because he has led the Mets to probably a playoff birth

Clutch's Mets 2008 Awards!

Good awards. One of the things they look at for league MVP is if the team would be a lot worse with out the player. Carlos Delgado does deserve Mets MVP, because he has carried us this second half of the season, and we wouldn't be the same without him. Good call on David Wright too, I feel like he loves hot hits to his corner, he doesn't even hesitate, he just eats them up. Clutchest player I would give to Johan Santana probably. He is just amazing every time he comes to the mound. Billy Wagner is definitely best reliever, but he doesn't have much competition there. I love Mike Pelfrey, he is great. He definitely get the young player to come through, or most improved player of the year award. He is the real deal. My rookie of the year would have to go to Daniel Murphy, he has been very clutch when we needed him, he plays like a veteran and has found a permanent spot on our roster. Go Mets.

Good job Clutch:

MVP- I agree with Delgado, without his second half we would be 5-10 games back.

Best defensive player:  I call it a 3-way tie between, Wright, Beltran and Church, even though he's only played half a season.  Anyone can play left field with those two guys covering center and right.

Best Reliever:  I am going to go with Joe Smith.  Even though he has occasional downs, most of the time he pitches well and he usually comes in with men on base.  He is the ONLY one who has been fairly consistent all season.

Best Starter:  Santana has been very good and consistent all year and should have 18-20 wins.  He has pitched like an ace.

Pelfrey:  I would have called this ' Most improved' but he definitely deserves a reward.  He has future ace written all over him.

One more award:  "The giving us what we expected down the stretch"  Award-  Brian Schneider.  Between injuries, the hand infection and just subpar play, Schneider was a disappointment in the first half.  But since he's been totally healthy in August and September, his bat has gotten hot and his defense and throwing have been terrific.

Clutch's Mets 2008 Awards!

Right on with just about everyone Clutch.

I agree with everyone with the exception of the MVP.  I really think it is Jose Reyes this year.  The more he hits, the more he gets on base the more he provides his team chances to score runs.  His defense is better than Delgado,  he has been more consistent at the plate than Delgado and he has provided some, although not as many as Delgado, clutch hits.  Just having him on the base paths takes some of the pitcher's focus away from the batter.  I but into the hype; he drives this team.

Look at the small sample size of the last two games.  Reyes 2 hits mets score 9 and 7 runs.  I dont know how to run a table comparing Multi hit games versus runs scored, but I would bet there is a strong correlation.  If anyone can do so please feel free to prove or disprove my agrument.  But I watch enough games to notice when he gets on the Mets score runs.

The Mets lead the league in scoring first we can all agree on that.  That I can almost definitively say it is because of Reyes.
