Ruth Showed that he could pitch and hit. Pretty much saved baseball after the Black Sox thing. Cannot ask more from one player. Sorry Ted

Cobb The way he played the game although not liked by many was pretty much unmatched. Check out this guys avg., when he did not win batting titles he was right there in the thick of things. Stolen Bases were off the charts for the time that he played also. Sorry Willie

Ruth and Cobb are original H O F ers these are 2 of the main reasons for building the hall. They set records that stood the test of time. They move on.

Ruth--He made outfielders tremble with every swing.

Cobb--He made 2nd basemen tremble every time he legged out a double.

Muffin, Ty Cobb wasn't a pitcher!  He was the greatest hitter of the "dead ball" era.

Babe Ruth

Ty Cobb

My votes are:

Babe Ruth - Can't vote against THE greatest ballplayer ever...

Ty Cobb - Gotta pick the pitcher.  Close call though...

See you in the finals!

Babe Ruth overrated?  There is always some guy running around saying that. I won't go crazy with Ruth stats but just talk about some important ones.

Ruth lead the league 161 TIMES in many batting categories.  161 times!  The avg HOF player lead their league around 27 times.

Ruth was in the top 10 in many batting categories 340 fricken times!!!  The avg HOF player was in the top 10 around 144 times.

Seriously.  Go and look at Ruth's batting stats and see how many categories he lead the league and for how many consecutive years.  It is amazing.

In 1917 he won 23 games as a pitcher.  That same year he also hit .325.  He won more than 20 games twice and also won 2 World Series games as a pitcher.  If he had stayed a pitcher he would have been a HOFer.

He was a dominant pitcher before he was an out of this world hitter. I'm looking forward to the battle between Ruth and Cobb.  I'll be doing a serious look at their numbers before I make my vote for either one.  It should be interesting.

How is that pathetic 14?  Mays was a ton better fielder, and his league was a lot tougher.  He also gets war credit for the season he missed.  He hit a ton of homers, had blazing speed (stole 300 bases, but in an era where steals were few, if he had palyed in the 80s, would have had over 500 steals), and even hit for a high average.  Cobb is slightly better, since he dominated his era so much, but Mays had a much tougher league, so the difference is very slight.
