Very easy to argue with Hornsby.  He was the greatest offensive 2B in history, but he was a butcher at second.  Remember, we're picking an all-time team here; you have to consider defense as well.  Very tough position to pick:  put these 5 names (listed chronologically) in a hat and pick one:  Lajoie, Collins, J. Robinson, Morgan, Sandberg.

I know he won't win, but I have to throw in a vote for my dad's favorite player of all time... Nellie Fox.

Hard to argue with Rogers Hornsby. Crazy career numbers. I would mention though on Robinson - he didn't start his major league career until he was 28. The average age for HOF second baseman was 22 so his career numbers suffer in comparison. He would be my second choice.

Honorable mention (no particular order):  Joe Morgan; Roberto Alomar; Ryne Sandberg; Jackie Robinson.

I have to say Rogers Hornsby.

Joe Morgan would be number two on my list.

I would have to go with Rogers Hornsby, lifetime average of .358, led the league in slugging 9 times during his career.

I would not put Jackie Robinson in this league at all, he was great for baseball, but not as great as a ballplayer.  Now Joe Morgan is a guy who deserves some recognition in this position, Craig Biggio is another who ranks up there along with Ryan Sandberg, Roberto Alomar, Jim Gantner, Frankie Frisch, Eddie Collins, and maybe Jeff Kent.  if people are throwing Kinsler and Cano out there, i think they are probably forgetting about the best 2B in the league right now Chase Utley.  You can't even compare Cano or Kinsler to this guy, but Utley is way too early in his career to be even mentioned as the greatest 2B all time, so there is no way Kinsler and Cano can even be brought up in this conversation.

This position belongs to Rogers Hornsby hands down!

***and if games played or years at position don't matter, I would have to say Pete Rose would run right up there with Hornsby.  Rose broke into the majors for his first 4 years as a 2B before moving to the outfield, although he did still play 2B in at least a couple of games each year after his move to the outfield.

Rogers Hornsby for his bat. Defensive stats are hard to come by for players from earlier ball players. Keep those positions coming Clutch!
