Not to take anything away from RIpken, because he was a phenomenal player, but if you truly think Ozzie Smith is overrated, you either A) never saw him play or B) don't know baseball.

Carpet or no, NOBODY had a glove like Ozzie.  Check out his link.  The first highlight at about :10 in is probably the greatest defensive play ever, and not on carpet.  Actually, most of these clips are not on carpet.

Now, as a play-by-play guy, Ozzie is absolutely HORRIBLE!!!!  We're talking almost Tim McCarver horrible.

Shut up about Yount already.

He finished up in CF because he couldnt catch the ball. LOL

If youre going to include him, then you need to be including A-ROD, because he played more years at SS than Yount!

I'm thinking no one here is mentioned Luis Aparicio. 9 gold gloves, 508 career stolen bases. Same career batting average as Ozzie Smith, AND, Aparicio did not play on carpet!

No doubt Ripken is a credit to MLB and a class act. However, I've heard it said how little a team player Ripken was, because his consecutive games played streak won out over the times he was not in the best playing condition. I don't think his durability in itself is sufficient to warrant greatest shortstop.

Most of those years were played on carpet. Sure it's quicker, but not as many odd hops. Certainly Ozzie was good, but still overrated.

I think i go cal ripken because of his offense and his steady play, also he's was always in the lineup.P.S ozzie had the best glove but lacked the all around game.
