LET US NOT FORGET THAT ALEX RODRIGUEZ WAS A SHORT STOP, MAYBE NOT THE GREATEST FIELDER BUT BY FAR THE BEST OFFENSIVELY, HR'S, EXTRA BASE HITS, STEALS, ETC.

Just because you didn't see him play, doesn't mean he isn't the best of all -time...

My vote to Honus Wagner...

This is tough.  In some ways, Derek Jeter doesn't even belong in the conversation.  He's one heck of a hitter, but he isn't even a good shortstop, let alone greatest.  But if you're looking for who could occupy the position and make a team better, it just might be him.

Then there's Ozzie Smith, with the best glove ever at the position, who needs to be considered.

Or Cal Ripken, Jr., who reinvented the position...but he isn't the best hitting or fielding shortstop of all time...although he might be the best combination of the two.

Given the above options, I choose Ozzie, because he's the best pure shortstop.

I have to admit, the previous posts completely changed my vote. I was attempting to decide between the glove of Ozzie Smith and the endurance and reliability of Cal Ripken Jr. After reading this however, I'm going with Honus Wagner. He was an incredible talent, and certainly worthy of my vote here.

As a side note, in looking up his career, I found that he pitched in 1900 and 1902 with 204 BB, 204 K's, and a 3.06 ERA in 282 innings. Not bad for someone that is being voted the Best SS of all time.

Honus Wagner.  Ozzie was a great defender but at the plate he was lacking.  Cal's streak was nice but again he didn't have the bat of Wagner's.

This is a very deep position...Here goes my top 5

  1. Cal Ripken Jr. - Orioles
  2. Honus Wagner - Pirates, Colonels
  3. Ernie Banks - Cubs
  4. Robin Yount - Brewers
  5. Ozzie Smith - Cardinals

My vote narrowly goes to the Iron man of baseball. I give an HM to the following players 1st to Arky Vaughn then to Derek Jeter of the Yankees even though I dislike him....Alex Rodriguez would have merited some claim due to his offensive prowess prior to his position change as well. Omar Vizquel deserves some mention here too. Of the young guys with potential to be on this list,  I would single out the Marlins Hanley Ramirez.
