Your Favorite Rock and Roll Song All Time..WINNER

Posted on: March 17, 2009 9:31 am

Seven months ago today I started the search for the greatest rock song of all time by the popular choice of those who would respond to my blog.  The verdict is in.    By a margin of 27 votes to 15, the winner was....

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin

Since the vote is over, I'd like to know what song you all actually like best as a personal favorite.   Although Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" was the winner over the course of this contest, I was just curious what YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE SONG IS.

So please post that.   For me, its pretty much a toss-up between 2 Styx songs.   I like Come Sail Away and the Best of Times.

A number of you inquired as to what I'd do next with my blog after this rock and roll song vote-in.  I've decided to move in the direction of baseball.   I want to put together the consensus greatest baseball team of all time.   So, I ask all of you, after listing what your favorite rock song of all time is, also give me who you think is the best catcher all time.   I want to take in the names of the greatest catchers all time.  Based on the response I get, on my next blog entry, we'll vote for the greatest catcher, either in an elite 8 format or maybe we'll just go straight for the #1 guy immediately, depending on what you all think might be more fun.   While we vote on catchers on my next entry, I'll take nominees for first basemen.   I like the idea of having a blog with alot of poster particaption and help.   It seemed to work great on the rock blog, so I'll try it in assembling the greatest baseball team all time.

Thanks alot for the particpation from all of you in my rock and roll blog.  You're all encouraged to continue to follow with the baseball theme with me.

By the way, shoot me who you like for the final four and the ultimate winner in the NCAA tournament.     My final four are Louisville, Memphis, Pittsburgh and Oklahoma.   My finals are Memphis and Oklahoma.  My winner is Memphis.   Sorry Sooner fans, I guess that makes you #2 twice in one year.

Earnhardt is perhaps the most over-rated driver ever.   He's living off of his father's legacy.

My favorite song is "Carry On My Wayward Son" by Kansas.  I was really hoping to get them into the final.  Sigh, almost.  But to lose to "Hotel California"???  Aargh, the pain of that.........

My pix for the basketball tourney??  Um, that would be sleep for me.  I have consistently gotten more and more bored with basketball over the last few years to the point that I didn't even fill out a bracket this year.  I didn't even look at one until last Thursday.  But I will say this, I am the charter member of the ABCDE fan club.  That would be Anyone But Carolina, Duke and Earnhardt.  OK, so Earnhardt ain't basketball, but I still can't stand him.  And living in NC, I hear about him all the time.

Lazer, you did a superb job on this rock blog.  it has been very enjoyable to have been a participant in such a fine event.

I have so many favorite songs. it's hard to boil it down to a couple.  The Wall - Kansas, Born To Run - Bruce Springsteen, the song that lost in the finals Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who are a few older tunes that are favorites.  Almost any Pretenders or Bon Jovi song is good.  Some newer tunes like Crazy from Gnarls Barkley, Viva La Vida - Coldplay, or It's My Life from No Doubt are great as well.

Best catcher for me is a toss up between Johnny Bench and Thurman Munson.  Bench was the better all round player, but they wern't any tougher or as motivating to his team as Munson was.  Of course Bob Boone thinks he's the greatest of all time, so make sure he gets left off the list if possible.

First base is hard.  There have been so many great ones.  Always enjoyed watching Boog Powell, Harmon Killebrew, Tony Perez, George Scott, and Orlando Cepeda.  There are some names to help start that ball rolling.  I'm sure there are at least 20 more worthy of votes.

I don't even remember who is in my final four.  All I know is UConn always does well when I pick them to go far.

Thanks once again for a great blog.  I'll be on the lookout for the baseball one.

I really can't think of what my favorite song is right now. It probably is Rocket Man by Elton John. I think the greatest catcher of all time was #5 of the Big Red Machine, Johnny Bench. My final four are Pittsburgh, North Carolina, Connecticut, and Kansas. My finals are Pittsburgh and UConn with Pittsburgh taking the championship.

Great job here Lazer!  Thanks for all the work, fun and reminsicing.  Really good times.  Hating that this one's over.

Freebird - love the list!  One of my faves in news conferences has always been Lou Holtz.  Some of his at Minnesota and ND were epic.  Always a riot.  And Bill Parcells were great down in Big D.  Every time it was like a fracking chore for him.  Just watching him in internal pain during them was a hoot and a holler.

As far as a personal favorite song, wow, really don't have any one, or five, or twenty.  It depends on the mood I'm in or wanting to achieve or build, the time of day or my surroundings.  Even my fave Beatles, Dead or Stones song changes daily.  But I do try to start every day by having the first thing I listen to be "Linus and Lucy" by Vince Guaraldi.  Guarantees a good mood and sweet way to start the day off.

Don't forget the Cubs manager from the early 80's I believe (I think it was Lee Ilia sp?).  That was a classic.
