Vote For the Greatest THIRD Baseman of All Time

Posted on: April 18, 2009 4:07 pm

Welcome back my friends to the blog that never ends, we're so glad you could attend, come inside, come inside

I should have started one of my rock and roll blog entries with that line.  Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed your Easter holiday and its time for me to get back to presenting you the greatest baseball players of all time for you to vote in the greatest team.  This week we will decide on the greatest third baseman.  My list includes all 10 of the third basemen in the hall of fame plus Chipper Jones who in my opinion should be in this discussion as well.  Before you ask "Where's Alex Rodriguez?", I already did the research and Alex still has logged about 500 more games at shortstop, so hold your horses until the next round.   I've research both the career offensive and defensive stats for these 11 players.  Rather than using the players actual fielding percentage I'm using a +/- system in comparing their defensive skills to that of players in their era.  I'm using the same system for each players range.   In the early 1900s infields were poorly manicured compared to modern standards and gloves were much smaller, so fielding percentages were much lower in the 20th century.

Last week I posed the question as to whether or not Pete Rose should be a substitute or a bench player on my 25 man roster.   The number of replies and votes were light, but the content of those who opined was very solid and informative.   I'd like to leave that issue up for a vote for at least another week, as I'd like a larger sampling to make a determination, so please, if you haven't done so already, please go to my previous entry, read the posts and cast your vote.

Without further ado, here is the list of the 11 greatest third baseman of all time...Pick your number 1.

Vote For the Greatest THIRD Baseman of All Time

I'd have to divide my pick here. Brooks Robinson is the best to ever field the position "hands down." That to me makes him the best third baseman.
I think I'll give George Brett a slight edge or Chipper Jones as the best offensive threat to play at third base although I must admit I didn't realize how well Chipper's numbers stacked up.

It was a tough call, but I gotta go with Mike Schmidt over George Brett.

I'll take Mike Schmidt with the glove and the bat.  If we voted for favorite, hands down Brooks Robinson for the glove.  Amazing.  The old film footage of him playing third is jaw dropping.  Honorable mention to Brett for making Preparation H a household brand single handedly.

Vote For the Greatest THIRD Baseman of All Time

Lazer, I would go with Mike Schmidt, mostly based on power numbers, but he did have amazing range at the position as well. He was fun to watch and I would have loved to see him in the Home Run Derby, along with Eddie Mathews. Chipper is a great hitter but injuries have hampered his career lately, I still think that he is a top tier Hall of Famer though, based on his body of work. Bill Mazeroski was a great defensive 3-bagger but his bat wasn't great. He is a HOF'er, I think but probably not offensively productive for this group. Based on his defense though, might be better than the rest of them though. Peace E.

Great debate by wahoo sam and ShoeShine Boy.  While I both understand and support your claims for Schmidt using sabermetrics, wahoo, I think we can discuss these things without throwing out slurs such as "idiot".   I think its totally possible for us to feel we're right about a particular issue without thinking those who feel differently are idiots.

Vote For the Greatest THIRD Baseman of All Time

Hmmmmm,,,,,,  This is a tough one.  If you're looking for the best fielding 3rd baseman, it would have to be Brooks Robinson.  If you're looking for a power hitting 3rd baseman, it's a toss-up between Mike Schmidt and A-Rod.  (If you consider A-Rod a 3rd baseman)

My pick?  Pretty obvious isn't it?   GEORGE BRETT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Been waiting for 3rd Base...

Mike Schmidt ftw.  Outside of his career batting average, had the whole game.  The numbers and the defense.  Love the guy!  And that career BA was really hurt by his first major league season!  Well below the Mendoza line.  Schmitty was flat out great!

I don't see an Emerson or a Lake or a Palmer listed at 3rd base, perhaps I've missed something??

Eddie Matthews, Mike Schmidt and Chipper Jones are solid long ball options at the "Hot Corner". I really like George Brett for the leadership and emotion that he brings. But my vote has to go to the "Human Vacuum Cleaner" Brooks Robinson. He was a highlight reel all by himself. His offensive statistics don't match up very well, but he was second to none with the glove.
