Stoudemire maybe safe, but Heat still chasing

By Marc J. Spears and Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports

With the Cleveland Cavaliers no longer an option for Amar’e Stoudemire, the Phoenix Suns are prepared to keep their All-Star forward through Thursday’s trade deadline, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Unless a trade materializes before Thursday afternoon, Stoudemire very well could spend the rest of the season in Phoenix.

“I think it’s 50-50 at best with Cleveland out of it,” said Stoudemire’s agent, Happy Walters.

The Suns weren’t enamored with the Cavs’ offer for Stoudemire – Zydrunas Ilgauskas, J.J. Hickson, Danny Green and a first-round pick – which spurred Cleveland to instead acquire Antawn Jamison from the Washington Wizards for a much smaller package.

The Miami Heat have continued to express interest in Stoudemire, and have offered Udonis Haslem, Quentin Richardson, Daequan Cook and a first-round pick.

Mutombo hopes to return in two weeks

Veteran NBA center Dikembe Mutombo is currently without a team, but the free agent says he's received interest from several squads, and he hopes to sign and be back on the court within two weeks.

The 42-year-old Mutombo told the Boston Globe on Sunday that the Celtics, Heat, Spurs and other teams have expressed interest in adding him to their rosters. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel said on Monday that Heat officials would neither confirm nor deny their interest in Mutombo. The Heat are also waiting on the possible return of Alonzo Mourning from last year's knee injury. Mourning was in the Heat locker room before Monday's game.

The News-Herald in Ohio reported that while the Cavaliers don't appear to have major interest in Mutombo, they have also not ruled him out. The story noted that if Zydrunas Ilgauskas were going to miss a considerable amount of time, then it may be more attractive to the Cavs to pick up Mutombo.
