HATE BOWL 2008 PLAYOFFS "UNSWEET 16"

Well, well, well!  We're down to the round of 16 in our Hate Bowl 2008 Playoffs.  Interesting match-ups include one that's already been played on the field (BYU vs UCLA) and one that'll end the regular season in the Sunshine State (Florida vs Florida State).  All in all, there's a LOTTA hate to be had in these brackets.

I'll set an initial target of Wednesday, November 12 for closing the "Unsweet 16".  Here are your match-ups.  Just post your selections in the comments under this blog.  As with last round, only complete ballots with ALL GAMES SELECTED will be counted.  No hanging chads allowed.

Enjoy!

HATE BOWL 2008 PLAYOFFS ROUND ONE

As Dr. Johnny Fever would say, "HERE IT IS, MY BABIES!"  What we've all been looking for.  Our top four seeds (Notre Dame, Miami, USC, and BYU) all drew a bye for the first round, since we had 28 schools "nominated".  As promised, we have some interesting match-ups...a backyard battle between Ohio State and West Virginia, a match-up featuring two teams destined to battle for the ACC Atlantic Division championship (FSU and Maryland), and a pairing of two teams who could potentially meet in this year's BCS National Championship (Penn State and Georgia...keep in mind that this is written before The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party).

So here's how it works now.  I give you the matchups.  You give me your picks for each pairing.  By pick, I mean the teams you hate more than the other.  I know some of you won't have any particular feelings about some teams, but COME ON!  IT'S FOR FUN!  I'll set a target of closing out voting on Round One by Friday, November 7 (will move that up or back depending on when incoming votes die off)  So talk amongst yourselves and give me your best hate!

HERE ARE YOUR FINAL RESULTS FOR ROUND ONE!!  ROUND TWO COMING SOON!!!

SCORES UPDATED AT 6:11PM THURSDAY NOVEMBER 6!!!

#5 Idaho vs #28 Ball State    (Idaho WINS 23-7)

#6 Michigan vs #27 Clemson   (Michigan WINS 21-9)

HATE BOWL UPDATE THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30

A few more votes in over the last day or so.  Sorry for not including an update on votes last evening, but alas I had a long night on call.

FYI I'm planning on seeding for 32 teams, so if we're short of that I'll offer "byes" to the top vote getters for the first round.  I hate doing that because ND, USC, etc draw a LOT of votes, but maybe we'll make that up on round 2.

Here are the standings so far (also listed in the comments and in the Hate Bowl 2008 message thread)  Number of votes listed in parentheses (if none listed, that school only had one so far):

Notre Dame (17)
USC (14)
Miami (13)
BYU (12)
Idaho (8)
Michigan (8)
Ohio State (7)
Florida (5)
Tennessee (4)
Florida State (4)
Auburn (4)
Alabama (3)
Oklahoma (2)
Georgia (2)
Utah (2)
Washington (2)
Iowa
Oregon
Penn State

HATE BOWL UPDATE TUESDAY OCTOBER 28

Well, let's keep this party going.  Something like 15 votes in today, so we'll see what we get up until Friday. 116 total votes tallied so far.  Here are my TOTALLY UNBIASED (right!) observations.

1.  The biggest inter-regional hate so far is show to Notre Dame and USC, understandably.  One owns NBC, the other owns Hollywood.

2.  There is a HUGE amount of hate in the Idaho-Utah area.  They must get DirecTV in those libertarian militia training camps up in the mountains.  That, or the dye used on Boise State's field has run off into the groundwater system.

3.  Michigan and Ohio State hate each other equally.

4.  BYU fans hate in a nice way.  Sounds stupid, but it's true.

5.  A few of you have said you save "hate" for things like the Taliban or just have a problem using the word altogether.  I respect that.  We can take "dislike".

Take care, and we'll update you again tomorrow night!

HATE BOWL 2008 CONTINUES

Well, I've gotta be honest.  After a huge flurry of initial votes things have tailed off.  I'll keep voting open through 5pm tomorrow.  If things pick up I'll collect until Friday as advertised.  If not, I'll respect the attention span of the virtual world and move things up considerably.  Considerably would mean Wednesday.

If you've posted, thank you!  This is my first attempt at an ongoing effort like this, and if I'm able to pull it off I'll consider doing one for other leagues and sports (NFL and NCAAB come to mind).

Keep this page on your radar for the upcoming Hate Playoffs!

HATE BOWL 2008

Well, with nearly 100 votes in as of this morning it looks like word has gotten out about Hate Bowl 2008.  A slow weekend (probably due to a LOT of great games being watched), but we're heading into the home stretch.  In an effort to keep the original blog to a readable length, I'll post current standings as a comment each night.  No need to time code them that way.

I've tried to make a personal note back to each and every entry and have also dropped 5 star ratings to all.  Thanks to those of you doing the same.

For those of you new to the Bowl, just post your vote as a comment.  Only one vote per customer.  Thanks for your support!

HATE BOWL 2008

As the Plain White T's say, hate is a strong word.  A violent word.  But in sports, we don't say we "really, really don't like" teams.  We HATE them.  An interesting take on this is that football "hate" is highly dependent upon a team's success or failure.  Face it.  It's hard to hate FIU or North Texas.  It's easy to hate Florida or Ohio State.

Of course there are a lot of factors that play into football emotions.  Longstanding rivalries, fleeting coaching gaffes, media love, and conference ties (shout out to all of you other SEC homies!) all play into it.  There's also the evolution of the BCS...I don't remember hating so much back when the Cotton Bowl meant something.  The dissolution of bowls as a reward to players and fans has kicked the whole hate thing up a notch.  You know, I've been a Gator nearly my entire 50 years, but I still remember enjoying the fanfare surrounding a classic USC-OSU Rose Bowl or a 'Bama-Penn State Sugar Bowl.  Heck, I even road-tripped to NOLA in '78 just to be in town to experience the latter one.

But I digress.  Back to the topic.  Hate.

If you're a true-blue college football fan you've GOTTA hate some other team.  It's in the rule book we all get when we sign up, right below the rule about standing up for the National Anthem.  So here's what I've got for you.  Let's settle this post-to-post.  Just who (or whom, I could never get that right) is The Most Hated College Football Team in America.

Here's how it goes.  You give me ONE team.  The one you hate MORE THAN ANY OTHER TEAM IN FOOTBALL.  Only one.  I collect yours and a bunch of others submitted by other football fans.  Based on the number of submissions I'll rank them and seed them, and then we'll play them off against each other (in the same manner as those other blogs that rate rock guitar players and scariest movies).  This HIGHLY NON-SCIENTIFIC study will show us two things...who gets the most hate mail and who, given the opportunity of playing against a number of other hated teams, would most of us hate until the end of time.

I'll set a preliminary timeline of collecting the front data until Friday, November 7.  If I'm getting a ton of submissions I'll extend it.  If not, I'll take a couple of days and post the first round of the playoffs.

So here it is.  I humbly await your best hate.
