So without further adieu.. I give you the 2009 Week 1 People's Poll!

 1. (33) KANSAS (E) 991 1-0          HR-1 LR-3          AP-1 CP-1 GP-1

"Hands down the best team in the country. One of the best assembled teams ever." -Vol u me

 2. (3) MICHIGAN STATE (E) 942 1-0          HR-1 LR-6          AP-2 CP-2 GP-3

"Will face a tough Gonzaga team on Tuesday. I wonder if they'll show up, or pull one like they did last year against Maryland? I hope they pull a Maryland. Don't get me wrong, I know, they are an ELITE team." -Zagfan62

 3. (1) TEXAS (E) 898 1-0          HR-1 LR-9          AP-3 CP-3 GP-4

"I'm seeing a lot less of Dexter Pittman, weight-wise...He looked very good in Texas' first game of the season." -Kvskubball

 4. VILLANOVA (E) 848 1-0          HR-2 LR-10          AP-5 CP-6 GP-6

"This team I think has a long ways to come until they reach their full potential.  The growing up of Mouph Yarou will play a heavy factor on how good the Wildcats will end up.  They have a long ways before they become half the team of last year." -Ajplut

 5. PURDUE (+1) 801 1-0          HR-3 LR-10          AP-7 CP-7 GP-8

"Fire Power is there, They have to stay healthy. There not deep enough to have R.H. out again." -Shaunyboy

 6. (2) NORTH CAROLINA (-1) 785 3-0          HR-1 LR-10          AP-6 CP-4 GP-5

"
North Carolina is 3-0, but they had some trouble with Valpo the other night. We must remember, this is a team that lost its top 4 players from last season. We should expect a few bumps in the road for them. Once they start to gel though, look out." -Chrisisbuck#2

 7. (1) KENTUCKY (E) 739 1-0          HR-1 LR-NR          AP-4 CP-5 GP-2

"UK loses that Morehead State game if the Eagles shot anywhere near as well as they did at the end of last season.  They could easily move up with Wall back, but their lack of shooting bothers me." -Whoridin99

 8. WEST VRGINIA (E) 706 1-0          HR-5 LR-16          AP-8 CP-9 GP-9

"
West Virginia got off to a good start. De'Sean Butler scored 26 in the opener. Devin Ebanks was a no show for the game, checking out for personal reasons. WVU needs him for them successful this season." -Chrisisbuck#2

 9. DUKE (E) 691 1-0          HR-4 LR-15          AP-9 CP-8 GP-10

"Scheyer is going to have to play that well EVERY game, it's clear, because the Devils have no one else." -Schildkrottle

 10. CONNECTICUT (E) 572 1-0          HR-5 LR-17          AP-12 CP-13 GP-7

"Not a good performance need to be impressive next week if they want to stay up in the rankings." -Patrick3636

 11. BUTLER (+1) 544 1-0          HR-6 LR-22          AP-11 CP-10 GP-11

"They didn't spank Davidson, sans Curry...maybe first game jitters??? I'm wondering how Butler will handle a tough Non-conference schedule, AND the extremely high expectations!?" -Kvskubball

 12. TENNESSEE (+1) 532 1-0          HR-6 LR-NR          AP-10 CP-11 GP-14

"Big guys should have some confidence now, that swagger is what makes them tick." -Shaunyboy

 13. WASHINGTON (-2) 503 3-0          HR-8 LR-24          AP-14 CP-14 GP-12

" With Isiah Thomas and Gaddy in the backcourt they will be tough, this could even be one of the top 5 backcourts in the nation, but they will have California to deal with to win the Pac – 10, with the loss of their two big guys Brockman and Dentmon I don’t see them making much of a run in the NCAA’s." -Iusucks

 14. CALIFORNIA (E) 455 2-0          HR-8 LR-NR          AP-13 CP-12 GP-19

"Did not show me much against murray state, my opinion the most overrated team in the country." -Mango61

 15. OHIO STATE (+1) 405 2-0          HR-6 LR-NR          AP-15 CP-15 GP-17

"Solid team posted 2 solid wins.  Bigger test for the Buckeyes this week against the Tar Heels." -Wachoosay

 16. MICHIGAN (-1) 371 1-0          HR-9 LR-NR          AP-15 CP-16 GP-18

"I'm a man who's willing to admit when he's wrong.  I didn't have Michigan on my ballot for the preseason poll, but The Coaches had them 15th, the AP had them 15th, rivals.com had them 14th, Gary Parrish had them 19th, The People's Poll had them 15th (you get the idea).  Then their boy goes and drops a triple-double in the opener.  Even if it is Northern Michigan, that's impressive.  So apologies, Michigan, and welcome to my ballot." -Pittbaster

 17. OKLAHOMA (E) 294 1-0          HR-8 LR-NR          AP-17 CP-17 GP-15

"Four Oklahoma freshmen who played significant minutes all scored in double figures not to bad." -Froggiemlm

 18. CLEMSON (+1) 226 1-0          HR-12 LR-NR          AP-22 CP-23 GP-13

"Looks to be a factor in the ACC this year if it can avoid the annual late season collapse." -Patrick3636

 19. LOUISVILLE (+1) 211 0-0          HR-11 LR-NR          AP-20 CP-22 GP-21

"Will someone tell Pitino the basketball season has started??? No games this past week.." -Kvskubball

 20. MINNESOTA (+1) 208 1-0          HR-13 LR-NR          AP-24 CP-18 GP-23

"Tubby Smith is an underrated coach with a good returning group, including Westbrook, they will make it to the NCAA’s and could make some noise.  If they lose Trevor Mbakwe due to the assault case in Florida that could prove huge and well see what they are truly made of." -Iusucks

 21. DAYTON (+1) 201 1-0          HR-13 LR-NR          AP-18 CP-21 GP-16

"Played a tough one vs Creighton but pulled it out like a good team should." -Jermtheworm23

 22. GEORGETOWN (NR) 167 1-0          HR-15 LR-NR          AP-19 CP-20 GP-24

"Easy schedule to start the season, they need to start beating some of these teams more impressively." -Patrick3636

 t23. GEORGIA TECH (E) 163 1-0          HR-8 LR-NR          AP-21 CP-19 GP-NR

"Yellowjackets' reclamation project off to a good start with a comprehensive win over Florida A & M." -Wachoosay

 t23. ILLINOIS (+1) 163 1-0          HR-8 LR-NR          AP-23 CP-25 GP-22

"Bruce Weber has Mike Davis and Demetri McCamey back, with the addition of a solid fresh class including Brandon Paul who had 22 points on their opener will be tough, but can they survive the rigors of the Big Ten in conference schedule?" -Iusucks

 25. SIENA (E) 129 1-0          HR-17 LR-NR          AP-NR CP-NR GP-20

"Short, Simple, and to the point, this team aint no sleeper anymore." -Hoosierguy10109

  3. Big 12 (.0702)
  4. Big East (.0704)
  5. SEC (.0707)

  7. Horizon (.1405)
  8. Atlantic 10 (.1508)
  9. MAAC (.1609)
  10. West Coast (.2110)
  11. USA (.2111)
  12. Ohio Valley (.2412)

Breaking down the rankings:

With almost no meaningful games during the first week, the poll looks much the same as it did during the pre-season baring a few exceptions. Look for things to get a bit more interesting this week with some nice matchups including Kansas vs Memphis, Louisville vs Arkansas, Michigan St vs Gonzaga, North Carolina vs Ohio St, Syracuse vs California and Dayton vs Georgia Tech just to name a few.

Kansas comfortably holds down the top spot again this week going into their first real test vs Memphis on Tuesday. Returning runner-up Michigan St snags 3 first place votes and comes in at #2 followed by Texas, Villanova and Purdue who is new to the top 5 this week.

North Carolina slips a spot to #6 despite already having 3 wins on the season. Resurgent Kentucky is up next while the UK faithful look forward to John Walls regular season debut tonight. West Virginia and Duke are next followed by Connecticut who is coming off a less than impressive opening win vs William & Mary.

Butler comes in up a spot at #11 followed by Tennessee. Washington somehow slips 2 spots to #13 despite being 3-0 and coming off a win where they won by more points (56) then their opponent, Portland St scored (55).  The top 15 is finished up with 2-0 California followed by Ohio St.

Michigan slips a spot to #16. The Wolverines are followed by Oklahoma. Who would of thought the Sooners basketball team would have the chance to outshine the football squad in a post Blake Griffin year? Clemson, Louisville and Minnesota are up next and all up a spot from last week.

Dayton continues to hold down the 21st spot followed by the only newcomer this week; Georgetown. Freshman led Georgia Tech and the Illini of Illinois tie for the 23rd spot. Rounding out our Top 25 for the week is little guy Siena who looks to be this seasons Cinderella.

The People's Poll: 2009 Pre-Season

Welcome to the Pre-Season People's Poll!

The People's Poll is made up of 40+ College Basketball fans who want their opinions heard! Voters give their take over the weeks action on the main CBB board with the results tallied here every Monday. Each week's poll reflects games played through Sunday. If you'd like to check out each voters ballot, here you go. Even if you're not a regular voter, look for the People's Poll voting thread every week to give your take! You may end up in the poll!

So without further adieu.. I give you the 2009 Pre-Season People's Poll!

 1. (34) Kansas (NA) 994 0-0          HR-1 LR-2          AP-1 CP-1 GP-1

As complete a team as we have in college basketball this year. Talented, and everyone back from last year's Sweet 16 team. So what do my JayHawks have to do to climb the mountain this year? My 3 most important issues are: First, become a better passing team, especially in feeding the post. Second, Collins must value his possessions more and be a better facilitator this year and not try to do too much. He has lots of help this year, he needs to lead it! Third, this team will need to check it's individual E.G.O.'s at the door. If Everyone Gets Onboard, this team will be tough to beat, even in a one-and-done tournament, otherwise known as the NCAA crapshoot!  -Kvskubball

 2. (2) Michigan State (NA) 947 0-0          HR-1 LR-5          AP-2 CP-2 GP-3

Tom Izzo reminds me of the tough teacher no one wants to get in the classroom, but by the end of the semester you realize just how much you learned from them.  Still, this team got "schooled" by Northwestern in East Lansing last year! -Wachosay

 3. (1) Texas (NA) 875 0-0          HR-1 LR-9          AP-3 CP-3 GP-4

Best Frontline in the nation, James and Pittman could Start for the Cowboys. -Shaunyboy

 4. Villanova (NA) 874 0-0          HR-2 LR-8          AP-5 CP-6 GP-6

Jay Wright's stock couldn't be any higher. Coming off of a Final Four, Scottie Reynolds returns, very talented freshman class. Sounds like a Final four team to me. -Trespac

 5. (3) North Carolina (NA) 802 0-0          HR-1 LR-12          AP-6 CP-4 GP-5

I can hear UK and Duke fans crying now..."Why do you have them rated SO high?" My answer is talent folks, pure and simple, and tons of it. The weakness of this team, if it has one, is lack of experience in the backcourt, sort of the 'anti-Nova'. If freshman Dexter Strickland comes in and plays well, to the point that he replaces Drew, then this team may surprise most people and punch a ticket to Indy. -Kvskubball

 6. Purdue (NA) 801 0-0           HR-3 LR-9          AP-7 CP-7 GP-8

They return everything, but I am not as in love with their incoming talent as the teams I have ahead of them.  Experience is great, but I do feel like we have seen this team's ceiling last year.  The Big Ten gets tougher around them, and I think that keeps them from winning it. -Pittbaster

 7. Kentucky (NA) 733 0-0          HR-2 LR-NR          AP-4 CP-5 GP-2

They will be very good, and I'm sure John Wall will be excellent...but a program under a new coach with a brand new cast is bound to hit a few stumbling blocks.  I like them as a top team but because of the relative inexperience I do not like them to make the Final Four.   -Pittbaster

 8. West Virginia (NA) 694 0-0          HR-5 LR-17          AP-8 CP-9 GP-9

Young team gained experience last year look for Ebanks to Explode potential Big East POY. My pick to take the Big East, ranked behind Nova and UConn due to past experience but expect them to move up.  -Patrick3636

 9. Duke (NA) 688 0-0          HR-4 LR-15          AP-9 CP-8 GP-10

What would the top 10 be without them. Coach K loses a lot but somehow gets Andre Dawkins cleared a year early. The NCAA gods always seem to smile on Durham. -Trespac

 10. Connecticut (NA) 578 0-0          HR-5 LR-22          AP-12 CP-14 GP-7

They have the talent to be right back where they were last year, and the dedication of a coach that, love him or hate him, has had remarkable success with a previously irrelevant program and shown remarkable devotion to that program.  That means more than you think it does. -Pittbaster

 11. Washington (NA) 501 0-0          HR-5 LR-NR          AP-14 CP-13 GP-12

Another team most people are a year behind on, although they might actually live up to the hype. When you have two great backcourt lower classmen you have a solid foundation for what could be a great season for the Huskies. -Somerandomdude

 12. Butler (NA) 494 0-0          HR-8 LR-22          AP-11 CP-10 GP-11

Went to the NCAA Tournament last year with a young team on what was supposed to be their "down year". -Jermtheworm33

 13. Tennessee (NA) 492 0-0          HR-7 LR-NR          AP-10 CP-11 GP-14

Hands down the best team in the SEC with a ton of experience and something to prove with last year's mess. -Crazylegs0721

 14. California (NA) 485 0-0          HR-7 LR-NR          AP-13 CP-12 GP-20

No one shoots the three ball like they do. Jerome Randle is the early frontrunner for Pac-10 Player of the Year. With Theo Robertson and Patrick Christopher also back, the Golden Bears have one of the most underrated trios in the country. -Wizardking

 15. Michigan (NA) 350 0-0          HR-9 LR-NR          AP-15 CP-15 GP-19

Like Jeff Capel and Thad Matta, John Beilein is just what the doctor ordered for a Michigan program that was listless and sometimes flailing prior to his arrival.  If he can get the players to hunger for success like Rick Stansberry and Lorenzo Romar need to do, the Wolverines could make great strides in the next couple of years. -Wachoosay

 16. Ohio State (NA) 285 0-0          HR-10 LR-NR          AP-16 CP-17 GP-18

The Buckeyes only lose BJ Mullens, which means that the other post players might get to shoot the ball now. Evan Turner is the best all around player in the country, and there is a lot of backcourt depth. Transfer Zisis Sarikopoulos bolsters the frontcourt. -Wizardking

 17. Oklahoma (NA) 279 0-0          HR-8 LR-NR          AP-17 CP-16 GP-15

No blake no problem willie warren puts this team on his back but comes up short behind KU and Texas. -Froggiemlm

 18. Mississippi State (NA) 242 0-0          HR-8 LR-NR          AP-18 CP-19 GP-26

Jarvis Vanardo is an absolute beast under the boards.  If the Bulldogs and Volunteers merged schools to become Tennesippi State, there's your SEC Champion.  As it is, how well the guards play at MSU could tell how far this team goes.  Rumors out of Starkville indicate that last year's good play at season's end saved Rick Stansberry's job.  Let's see how he capitalizes on the opportunity this year. -Wachoosay

 19. Clemson (NA) 225 0-0          HR-11 LR-NR          AP-24 CP-24 GP-13

The Tigers add Milton Jennings and Noel Johnson to an already talented group. The loss of Oglesby stings but this team is still going to be tough to beat. -Trespac

 20. Louisville (NA) 222 0-0          HR-9 LR-NR          AP-19 CP-23 GP-22

Given the unwanted off-season publicity about his personal trevails, Rick Pitino is far and away the one person who couldn't wait for basketball practice to start.  Are the Cardinals too high or too low to start this season?  Who knows.  They may not finish where UL fans think they should, but Coach Pitino has a knack for getting his teams in position for post-season success. -Wachoosay

 21. Minnesota (NA) 184 0-0          HR-12 LR-NR          AP-25 CP-18 GP-16

Tubby has put Minnesota on the map to stay. -Twogoodspies

 22. Dayton (NA) 171 0-0          HR-11 LR-NR          AP-21 CP-22 GP-17

Dayton is a dangerous A-10 team who could make some noise this season. This is the team that knocked off West Virginia in the first round last season, then put up a good fight against Kansas. This team returns a lot, led by Chris Wright, who could be the favorite to win A-10 POY. -Chrisisbuck#2

 23. Georgia Tech (NA) 163 0-0          HR-10 LR-NR          AP-22 CP-20 GP-NR

The question here is how far can a team go that was last place in the ACC last year? Injuries and inexperience clobbered this team last year. This year, almost everyone is back (Is that a good thing or a bad thing?) and Hewitt adds one of the best freshmen in the country to his front-court. He'll need him, to battle the mastadons at Duke and UNC! He probably has a slight advantage in his guard rotation, over those two teams. Can he get this team to reach it's potential? If he does, this team could make a lot of noise this year. -Kvskubball

 24. Illinois (NA) 162 0-0          HR-9 LR-NR          AP-23 CP-NR GP-23

Two quotes by Bruce Weber: "We lost our heart and soul in Meacham and Trent" and "Again, talent doesn't mean wins. You've got to have the pieces to the puzzle." Those two comments are why I'm concerned that my model has over-rated the Illini. The Illini do have a capable replacement at PG in McCamey, but he has yet to play up to his talent. This team looked good at times last year and dreadful on other occasions. Weber has finally tapped into the Illinois talent pipe-line and will have a couple of options at SG. If Tisdale and Davis come into their own this year as juniors, then they may reach this lofty height. If not, they may look more like ground round in a better Big 10 conference, that is likely to be one of the top 3 conferences in the country this year. -Kvskubball

 25. Siena (NA) 118 0-0          HR-17 LR-NR          AP-NR CP-NR GP-21In: NA       Out: NA

The Saints return four starters...three of whom will be seniors...from a team that won 27-games and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.  A 30-win season is a distinct possibility for head coach Fran McCaffrey. -Theriverrock

An Ode to the Fieldhouse

Do you hear that? Wait.. shh.. listen.. you hear it?

It’s the whispers of James Naismith, Phog Allen, Adolph Rupp, and Dean Smith. The victory cries of Clyde Lovellette, Wilt Chamberlain, Jo Jo White and Danny Manning. The Ghosts of KU past still lingering to catch a game at the Mecca of college hoops. This is College Basketball. This is “Phog” Allen Fieldhouse.

It begins when you walk thru the doors of the historic building. The limestone façade elegantly depicting the wear of its 54 years. Named after the father of basketball coaching, it was Allen who led players named Smith and Rupp to victories on the court. Stepping across the Allen Fieldhouse threshold is like a taking a step back in time. A nostalgic rush unlike any other.

Was that Larry Brown running by? Look! There goes Paul Pierce!

Beyond the simple Crimson and Blue concourses lay the hallowed James Naismith Court. Dedicated to the inventor of the game and KU’s first coach, it’s a floor that has graced some of the best to ever play the game.

Your eyes slowly gaze up to see the bleachers adorning the court like an antique frame. If you close your eyes you can see the students packing in hours before a game. Readying their Daily Kansan Newspapers into funnels to house the copious amounts of confetti that will be displayed during player intros. You can feel the floor rumble as first tip nears. 4,000 plus students jumping in wild anticipation.. and whoosh! Just like that the game begins and it washes over you. This is no ordinary place. This is special.

You open your eyes and continue your gaze up the bleachers to the windows that adorn both ends of the court. The soft light filtering in creating majestic shadows that seems to be dancing. It puts a smile on your face to think that what you’re feeling are the same emotions that Bud Stallworth and Darnell Valentine must have felt in their day.

Finally your gaze takes you up to the rafters. Rafters adorned with KU greats. Including an NCAA record 19 first team All-Americans, 52 conference titles, 13 final fours and 5 national championships. Rafters that have looked over countless victories and KU legends. Rafters that somehow hold the old barn together when its inhabitants seemingly try to rip it apart with their cheers and chants.

After a deep breath and a moment your gaze drifts down, and there it is. A banner that seems to loom larger than life. A watch guard of sorts, a warning to those opponents who step foot on the sacred court:

“Pay Heed All Who Enter, Beware of the Phog”

Chills race down your spine as the slow, methodical and somewhat eerie chant rings through your ears.

“Rock... Chalk… Jayhawk… KU… “

It makes you shudder. Just then do you realize the magnitude of where you are. It’s more than just a Basketball Arena, It’s a temple. A shrine to times past and a reminder of the things that make College Basketball so special.

The intimate setting is unrivaled in its history and tradition, but the Fieldhouse is more than a museum. It is an ever evolving beacon on the College Basketball landscape. With every new coach, player and fan that graces its walls, a new history is written.

This place is College Basketball. This is “Phog” Allen Fieldhouse.

  5. Memphis (-1) 822 28-3          HR-1 LR-14          AP- CP- GP-5

  10. Villanova (+3) 633 25-6          HR-7 LR-13          AP- CP- GP-12

  16. Syracuse (+9) 314 23-8          HR-13 LR-23          AP- CP- GP-16

  22. Butler (+2) 202 26-4          HR-15 LR-NR          AP- CP- GP-19

  23. Purdue (-7) 176 22-9          HR-14 LR-NR          AP- CP- GP-23

"The Boliermakers finish the season on a sour note, losing to Northwestern and conference champiion Michigan State. A lackluster offensive effort in the second half against MSU doomed Purdue, as they only scored 4 points in the first 15 minutes of the second half." -Rebalpatriot23

  24. Arizona State (-1) 118 22-8          HR-16 LR-NR          AP- CP- GP-25

Breaking down the rankings:

Finally some stability at the top! For the first time in a long time there is no change at #1. Meanwhile four of the top five teams remain the same from last week. Leading off their second week at #1 is Connecticut followed by Oklahoma who squeaked out a win at home over Colorado.  North Carolina is next and is trying to figure out if they can still be the team everyone thought they would be despite suspension and injuries. Pittsburgh moves up to #4 filling the spot vacated by Duke and Louisville rounds out the top 5.

Duke comes in at #6. The Blue Devils narrowly avoided back to back losses with an overtime win over Miami. Michigan State makes a big jump this week up 6 spots to #7. Wake Forest is next holding the same as last week. Another big jumper, Memphis, climbs to #9 and is followed by Marquette who is coming off an unexpected loss vs. South Florida.

Clemson comes in down one spot at #11 followed by the Bruins of UCLA who dismantled Notre Dame over the weekend. Villanova climbs 6 spots to #13 followed by Xavier who is coming off their third loss of the season. Kansas makes a nice climb up to #15 as the Jayhawks go into a Big Monday showdown at Mizzou tonight.

Butler falls 5 spots to #16 after their second loss. The Bulldogs are followed by Illinois and Missouri. The Tigers are making noise in the Big 12 and still have an outside shot at the conference crown with remaining games against KU and OU. Syracuse comes in down 2 spots from last week and is followed by Purdue. The Boilermakers don’t seem to be nearly the same team without Hummel who is suffering through a back injury.

Arizona State jumps back into the poll this week at #21. The Sun Devils are followed by two other newcomers this week, Florida State and Ohio State. Utah State holds strong at #24 with still only one loss on the season. Rounding out the poll this week is Gonzaga who is coming off a pounding at the hands of Memphis.

Rounding out the top 5 this week is the aforementioned Cardinals of Louisville.

Pittsburgh drops to #6 this week followed by a fellow Big East squad Marquette. It seems the Golden Eagles are having no trouble adjusting to new coach Buzz Williams. Wake Forest comes in next at #8 after a tough loss to Georgia Tech. Xavier climbs up a couple spots to #9 and Clemson finishes up the top 10.

Butler jumps to #11 and Purdue makes a nice climb up 5 spots to #12. They are followed by a dropping Michigan State. Memphis quietly moves up a few notches to #14 and is followed by UCLA.

The next two spots are filled by teams coming off losses, Texas and Syracuse. Minnesota jumps back into the poll at #18 followed by a fellow newcomer Villanova. Rounding out the top 20 is Gonzaga who holds the same as last week after knocking off St. Mary’s.

Kansas jumps up to #21 as they continue to remain unbeaten in Big 12 play. Breaking down the rankings:

A new week brings another new #1. The revolving ACC/Big East door for the top spot takes another spin this week as Duke gets their shot at #1. The Blue Devils have earned it but were by no means a unanimous top choice. Four of the top five teams received at least one first place vote this week. Connecticut comes in at the two spot followed by Big East counterpart Pittsburgh. Finishing up the all ACC/Big East top 5 are two more ACC squads, Wake Forest and North Carolina.

Oklahoma continues to hold strong at #6 followed by Louisville who is coming off a nice weekend showing. Untested Marquette is next followed by the first team out of the Big 10; Michigan State. Rounding out the top 10 this week is Texas who looks to keep pace with OU in the Big 12.

Xavier leads off the next 5 at #11 followed by a Clemson team who looks to prove they are not the team of years past. Butler is next at #13 with Syracuse close behind coming off a disappointing week. Our highest ranked Pac 10 team is next; Arizona State. The Sun Devils finish up our top 15.

The fighting Illini come in up 4 spots from last week followed by Purdue. Memphis makes its way back into the rankings after a nice road win vs Tennessee. Slumping UCLA is next followed by Gonzaga.

Speaking of slumping, Georgetown comes in at #21 followed by St. Mary’s who is tied with the Wildcats of Kentucky who look to make noise in the SEC. Rounding out the top 25 this week are Washington who is finally living up to its talent and the defending champs; Kansas.

Breaking down the rankings:

A new week brings a new team atop TPP. Wake Forest pushes through to the top spot and becomes the second ACC school to have the honor this season. Wake is followed by Duke who also received first place votes this week. Previous #1 Pittsburgh drops to #3 after a hard fought loss at Louisville. The next two slots remain unchaged from last week with Connecticut at #4 and North Carolina at #5.

The top team outside of the ACC or Big East is Oklahoma. The Sooners come in at #6 after a nice win vs Texas. Michigan State holds on to the #7 spot and is followed by Syracuse who again stays put at #8. Marquette is next, up 4 spots from last week. They are followed by Clemson who is coming off their first loss of the season to Wake Forest.

Up next is our big jumper of the week; Louisville. The Cardinals jump from #23 all the way up to #11 after their dethroning of previous #1 Pitt. Georgetown is next followed by Texas who like their star (AJ Abrams) is struggling as of late. Butler continues to creep up the rankings and comes in at #14. Rounding out the top 15 is UCLA who had their 10 game win streak snapped by Arizona State over the weekend.

Xavier comes in down one spot at #16 followed by the aformentioned Sun Devils of Arizona State. Rounding out the top 20 is a group of Big 10 teams, Purdue, Minnesota and Illinois.

Notre Dame coming off another loss in the brutal Big East drops to #21 and is followed by fellow Big East team Villanova. St. Mary's climbs into the poll this week at #23 followed by California at #24. Finishing up the poll for week 10 are the Zags of Gonzaga who look to correct their mid-season slump.

Pittsburgh Panthers logo1. (36) Pittsburgh (E) 996 15-0 HR-1 LR-2       AP-1 CP-1 GP-1

"Pitt won its first ever game as #1 by 20+ after a tight first half.  They shook off the eight days' rust and really turned it on in the second." -Pittbaster

Wake Forest Demon Deacons logo2. (4) Wake Forest (+2) 947 14-0 HR-1 LR-5       AP-2 CP-3 GP-2

Duke Blue Devils logo3. Duke (E) 929 14-1 HR-2 LR-6       AP-3 CP-2 GP-3

"Duke still leads the country in defensive efficiency, but their offense has been inconsistent. They scored 19 points in the first half and 47 points in the second half against FSU. Duke's going to be a nightmare for any team (I'm looking your way Xavier) when Singler, Henderson and Scheyer all play to their potential." -Objective4

Connecticut Huskies logo4. Connecticut (+1) 867 14-1 HR-3 LR-7      AP-4 CP-4 GP-5

North Carolina Tar Heels logo5. North Carolina (-3) 840 14-2 HR-3 LR-7      AP-5 CP-6 GP-4

"UNC went 14-0 prior to entering conference play, really had no one stand up to them, that is until they did enter conference play...right now they are the biggest disappointment in the top ten. They are not playing their game, both of their conference defeats was at their opponents pace and at their opponents game plan...they look like they are in shock." -Dookisevil

Syracuse Orange logo8. Syracuse (+1) 722 16-1 HR-4 LR-14      AP-8 CP-8 GP-7

Notre Dame Fighting Irish logo14. Notre Dame (E) 451 12-3 HR-8 LR-NR      AP-12 CP-13 GP-14

"The bipolar ballclub is back. The nation's longest home winning streak is offset by the nation's most inconsistent road team. Need to step it up with two tough road games upcoming." -NDIrish2011

Xavier Musketeers logo15. Xavier (+5) 368 13-2 HR-11 LR-NR      AP-15 CP-16 GP-17

California Golden Bears logo21. California (NR) 171 15-2 HR-12 LR-NR      AP-22 CP-23 GP-22

Arkansas Razorbacks logo24. Arkansas (NR) 119 12-2 HR-14 LR-NR      AP-NR CP-NR GP-23

"Not sure what to do with this bunch. 2 wins over top 10 teams makes me think those results weren't a sheer coincidence, but how do then turn around and lose to Mississippi State at home?" -Huskyonspeed

Illinois Fighting Illini logo25. Illinois (NR) 117 14-2 HR15- LR-NR      AP-NR CP-NR GP-18

"Weber has Illinois playing the motion offense beautifully.  However, the team had trouble with playing down to competition and not getting up for every game emotionally.  Blowing out Indiana was proof that Weber can motivate them to play hard every game.  The only issue is re-bounding - Indiana outrebounded Illinois by a large margin - but when you make your shots, that's less of an issue.  Illinois leads the nation in assists and assists per game, and leads the Big Ten in field goals made and field goal percentage.  Quite a turnaround from last year." -Gezemice

The People's Poll is made up of 40+ College Basketball fans who want their opinions heard! Voters give their take over the weeks action on the main CBB board with the results tallied here every Tuesday. Each week's poll reflects games played through Sunday. ie games played yesterday (Monday) have not been accounted for. If you'd like to check out each voters ballot, here you go. Even if you're not a regular voter, look for the People's Poll voting thread every week to give your take! You may end up in the poll!

So without further adieu.. I give you the Week 8 People's Poll!

 Pittsburgh Panthers logo1. (35) Pittsburgh (+2) 995 14-0 HR-1 LR-2 AP-1 CP-1 GP-1

"Still undefeated after a difficult week filled with upsets and craziness, a good win @ Gtwn, gets then the #1 spot in the Nation... who would've guessed.." -Hoosierguy1019

North Carolina Tar Heels logo2. (5) North Carolina (-1) 932 13-1 HR-1 LR-5 AP-3 CP-3 GP-2

"Still the best team in the county by a wide margin in my opinion, but polls need to have a "results based" component." -ThaBadge

Duke Blue Devils logo3. Duke (+2) 923 12-1 HR-2 LR-7 AP-2 CP-2 GP-3

"Let's take a brief look at how Duke's corrected their flaws from last year:
"live by the 3": only 22.8% of their points are scored from beyond the arc, which puts them in 277th place nationally. Clearly they've found other ways to score.
Post presence: 6-8 Lance Thomas and 7-1 Brian Zoubek have combined for 15.6ppg 8.8rpg and 1.4bpg, which is pretty impressive considering they're pretty much tag-teaming the post position. Kyle Singler is also averaging 7.8rpg
Point guard play: Out with Greg Paulus and in with Nolan Smith who's been the catalyst to Duke's nasty perimeter D this year. How nasty is that D you might ask? Duke allows 80.4 points per 100 posessions this year. That's #1 in the nation ladies and gents. When people tell me "Duke lives by the 3", I retort "NAY! Duke lives by the D". Hopefully people start paying attention." -Objective4

Wake Forest Demon Deacons logo4. Wake Forest (+2) 897 13-0 HR-2 LR-10 AP-4 CP-4 GP-4

"I have them so high because they are undefeated, but also because they went on the road, across the country nonetheless, to end BYU's 53 game home winning streak." -Pitty618

Connecticut Huskies logo5. Connecticut (-3) 822 12-1 HR-3 LR-11 AP-5 CP-5 GP-7

"Did not look good vs Georgetown at all.I predict they lose to WVU." -Bksballer89

Texas Longhorns logo6. Texas (+1) 752 11-2 HR-4 LR-11 AP-7 CP-7 GP-6

"Let's see if they can do something their rival couldn't do this week. Beat Arkansas on the road." -Bksballer89

Oklahoma Sooners logo7. Oklahoma (-3) 719 14-1 HR-4 LR-13 AP-6 CP-6 GP-9

"Really hasn't been all that great in my mind. The loss to Arkansas reaffirmed that. They had been playing great at times and not so great at others. The consistency level has to rise if they want a legitimate title chance." -Wizardking

Georgetown Hoyas logo8. Georgetown (+2) 713 10-3 HR-4 LR-14 AP-9 CP-10 GP-5

"Why below Connecticut?  Because I believe they played over their heads that day.  They're somewhere between the teams we saw in their two games this week." -Pittbaster

Syracuse Orange logo9. Syracuse (E) 697 14-1 HR-4 LR-12 AP-11 CP-9 GP-8

"Aside from Cleveland State, they've been very solid, beating UF, KU, and @ Memphis" -KVSKubball

Michigan St. Spartans logo10. Michigan State (+3) 631 11-2 HR-7 LR-15 AP-8 CP-12 GP-11

"My apologies to the Izzoids for not ranking them. The Maryland loss was not easily washed away in my mind, but can't ignore or slight wins over Texas, @ Minnesota, and @ Northwestern. I was slow on giving them credit!" -KVSkubball

Clemson Tigers logo11. Clemson (+5) 615 14-0 HR-2 LR-17 AP-12 CP-11 GP-10

"Undefeated yet again early in the season, they will probably fold like usual, but have shown so far that they have what it takes to get W's." -Pitty618

UCLA Bruins logo12. UCLA (E) 613 12-2 HR-4 LR-NR  AP-10 CP-7 GP-12

"I don't know if UCLA is really top 15 material, but no one else has stepped up to deserve this spot." -Pittbaster

Purdue Boilermakers logo13. Purdue (-2) 449 11-3 HR-10 LR-NR AP-14 CP-14 GP-13

"Hummel and Moore need to take over offensively for this team to live up to expectations." -Timboilerman

Notre Dame Fighting Irish logo14. Notre Dame (-6) 375 11-3 HR-12 LR-NR AP-13 CP-13 GP-18

"Very bad lost vs St.Johns. Get their chance to rebound tomorrow vs Georgetown." -BKSballer89

Marquette Golden Eagles logo15. Marquette (NR) 342 13-2 HR-12 LR-24 AP-18 CP-15 GP-14

"It has been a great week for the Golden Eagles. They beat Villanova (not an upset, but still a good win) and then pummeled a solid Cincinnati squad." -Wizardking

Tennessee Volunteers logo16. Tennessee (-2) 250 9-3 HR-13 LR-NR AP-15 CP-25 GP-17

Villanova Wildcats logo19. Villanova (-4) 222 12-2 HR-13 LR-NR AP-18 CP-17 GP-NR

"Tough lost vs Marquette but its the BIG EAST you can lose on any night." -Bksballer89

Xavier Musketeers logo 20. Xavier (+4) 217 11-2 HR-13 LR-NR AP-16 CP-18 GP-21

"The Musketeers have been mostly silent since the loss to Duke. Need more input. They do have wins against Missouri and Memphis." -KVSkubball

Arizona St. Sun Devils logo21. Arizona State (-1) 176 12-2 HR-14 LR-NR AP-20 CP-16 GP-NR

"I haven't been high on them, but they absolutely whalloped Stanford and consequently look like the second-best in the Pac 10, even after the loss at Cal." -Pittbaster

Boston College Eagles logo22. Boston College (NR) 157 13-2 HR-13 LR-NR AP-17 CP-24 GP-16

Breaking down the rankings:

This was by far the most volatile week in the history of TPP. Here are a couple of stats for ya.. Over half the top 25 teams lost last week. Only two teams (Syracuse & UCLA) remained in the same position. There are four new teams in the poll this week and 47 teams that received votes. And yes, one of those teams was Kentucky (Glares at JW). With the exception of Marquette, every team ranked 12th or lower went unranked on atleast one voters ballot. It was a crazy, crazy week.

North Carolina no longer reigns supreme this week. After their shocking loss to Boston College, Pittsburgh jumps up to the #1 spot. UNC comes in at #2 still receiving 5 first place votes. ACC counterpart Duke slides up two to #3 followed by a third ACC team in the top 5, Wake Forest. Up next is Connecticut who had their first slip up of the season vs Georgetown.

The next 5 starts out with two Big 12 schools, Texas and Oklahoma (is this football!?!). Georgetown is next after splitting games vs UConn and Pitt. The Orange(men) come in at #9 while Michigan State makes their way back into the top 10.

Undefeated Clemson is next (will this team collapse again?) followed by the Bruins of UCLA and the Boilermakers of Purdue. Down six spots from last week is Notre Dame who comes in at #14. Rounding out the top 15 is our biggest riser of the week, Marquette.

Tennessee is in at #16, down two spots after their loss to Kansas. Butler is next, up eight spots from last week. Minnesota climbs a spot despite a loss and is followed by Villanova who is down 4 spots from last week. Climbing into the top 20 is Xavier who benefits from the carnage above them.

Arizona State is next at #21 followed by the big winner of the week, Boston College. BC went into the Dean Dome and stole one from previous #1 UNC. That's good enough to get em a ranking, atleast for one week. Next is Baylor, down six spots. The Bears are followed by two newcomers that round out the top 25, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Georgetown Hoyas logo10. Georgetown (+2) 595 9-1 HR-7 LR-18

"We're going to learn soon f the majority of cbb posters were right in dubbing Georgetown "overrated."  They travel to #2 UCONN and host #3 Pittsburgh this week.  I'd expect them to go 0-2 in those games, which isn't to say they're bad.  I jst don't think they have the depth to hang with those two teams, and their excellent defense won't be quite enough." -Pittbaster     AP-11 CP-8

Breaking down the rankings:

Due to the Holidays there wasn't much change (or participation, thx Geze) this week. Our top 5 looks identical to last weeks with UNC still the unanimous #1. Next up is Connecticut, Pittsburgh, Oklahoma and Duke.

Wake Forest is still undefeated and still sitting in the #6 spot. Texas slides up to #7 filling the vacancy left by Gonzaga after their L this week to Portland State (Ouch!). The Irish of Notre Dame are up a spot and settle in at #8. The rest of the top 10 is filled out by Syracuse and the Hoyas of Georgetown.

Down one spot from last week is Purdue at #11 while UCLA climbs 2 spots to #12. Up next are two schools who flip flopped positions from last week's rankings. Michigan State is now ahead of Tennessee followed by a one loss Villanova squad.

In at #16 is undefeated Clemson who is followed by the Bears of Baylor. Next is our biggest drop of the week, Gonzaga. The Zags drop 11 spots to #18 after there third L of the season. Minnesota is up next and still undefeated while Arizona State rounds out the top 20.

Louisville holds strong at #21 this week followed by another sinking team Ohio State. The Buckeyes drop 9 spots to #22. Next is Michigan and Xavier who is barely clinging onto a top 25 spot after their 2nd L of the season. Rounding out the top 25 is our only newcomer this week, the Bulldogs of Butler.

That's it for this weeks edition. Hope you enjoyed it! Make sure and look for the People's Poll voting thread each week!

North Carolina Tar Heels logo 1. (40) North Carolina (E) 1000 11-0 HR-1 LR-1

"Its not rocket science when figuring out the best team in college basketball. This is it. This is it till the end. However, figuring out who the next 3 or 4 or 5 teams are is going to be some what of an adventure all year. The disparity amongst the other  top 25 teams is minute." -Halo27legend     AP-1 CP-1

Connecticut Huskies logo2. Connecticut (E) 957 10-0 HR-2 LR-4

"Connecticut plays a matchup of great teams with Gonzaga and outlasts them in OT.  Both teams display great talent and teamp play, explosiveness, great players who can finish." -Gezemice     AP-2 CP-2

Pittsburgh Panthers logo3. Pittsburgh (E) 908 12-0 HR-2 LR-6

"First real test this week, facing a decent Siena team at home and then a very dangerous Florida State team on the road.  FSU deserves some credit for the defense they played, but Pitt plays defense too.  As a fan, I'm encouraged, not deflated, by a close road win over a quality team...in which the Panthers shot below 30%.  They can't do that against everyone, but if they can survive a night like that against someone good it's a good sign." -Pittbaster     AP-3 CP-3

Oklahoma Sooners logo4. Oklahoma (E) 883 12-0 HR-3 LR-6

"Willie Warren is just what Blake Griffin needed." -Trespac     AP-4 CP-4

Duke Blue Devils logo5. Duke (+1) 836 10-1 HR-3 LR-10

"Dominating at its best saturday vs Xavier. The sad part for Xavier was that we didn't even play our Best. Singler and Nolan Smith both had off nights neither scored double digits. Zoubek played great defense blocking 4 shots yesterday. Duke is a final four team when they play like that." -Bksballer89     AP-5 CP-5

Wake Forest Demon Deacons logo6. Wake Forest (+4) 708 11-0 HR-5 LR-17

"Wake Forest  has found themselves within the top 10 on my poll. Sometimes the cookie crumbles in your favor. I expect them to have a cup of coffee or two before i send them on their way back down a little further in the poll." -Halo27legend     AP-6 CP-6

Gonzaga Bulldogs logo7. Gonzaga (+1) 703 8-2 HR-5 LR-16

"The lost a tough game at home to UConn, which they probably should have won if not for Pargo's boneheaded full court pass that was intercepted in the final minute of regulation." -BabyBlueUNC     AP-7 CP-7

Texas Longhorns logo8. Texas (-3) 685 9-2 HR-4 LR-18

"another tough loss. They have played everyone tough, close losses to Mich. St. and Notre Dame don't hurt them very much in my eyes." -KVSkubball     AP-9 CP-8

Notre Dame Fighting Irish logo9. Notre Dame (+3) 615 9-2 HR-6 LR-21

"where have you been, except against Texas in Hawaii?" -KVSkubball     AP-8 CP-11

Purdue Boilermakers logo10. Purdue (+4) 578 10-2 HR-6 LR-17

"Purdue had a very nice win vs. Davidson. They came out fast and never looked back. They shut down the leading scorer in the nation. They had been beating all the teams they were supposed to, but they had yet to have a nice solid win. This was it." -Chrisisbuck#2     AP-10 CP-15

Syracuse Orange logo11. Syracuse (-2) 569 12-1 HR-5 LR-24

"I know.  "Syracuse?  That high? They lost to Cleveland State!"  Yes.  but Cleveland State could be an NCAA tournament team, the Orange were undefeated to that point, and they beat Memphis (who is now just outside my top 25 but will likely be back) without Devendorf, who's going to return.  They showed everyone what I thought from the end of last year: they're more than last year's team plus Devo.  They're last year's team plus Devo, plus Rautins, plus a lot more depth, plus more maturity and finesse from Onuaku, plus better defense." -Pittbaster     AP-17 CP-14

Georgetown Hoyas logo12. Georgetown (+3) 525 8-1 HR-8 LR-20

"A win over Memphis doesn't look as impressive anymore, but one loss doesn't look too shabby, either." -s0merand0mdude     AP-12 CP-9

"Another team that just keeps on winning. They have 2 impressive wins thus far, and as long as they keep winning, I'll keep moving them up." -BabyBlueUNC     AP-15 CP-13

UCLA Bruins logo14. UCLA (-1) 470 8-2 HR-6 LR-NR

"People have slammed Arizona State for not beating "anyone", but who have the Bruins beaten? Best win is SIU????" -KVSkubball     AP-13 CP-10

Tennessee Volunteers logo15. Tennessee (+2) 396 8-2 HR-8 LR-23

"They finish the week 2-0, but could have easily been 0-2. The Marquette game was much closer than the score wouldnt indicate, and Belmont gave them all they could handle." -BabyBlueUNC     AP-16 CP-21

Xavier Musketeers logot16. Xavier (-9) 390 9-1 HR-11 LR-NR

"In the famous words of Denny Green, "they are who we thought they were." -Chrisisbuck#2     AP-14 CP-12

Michigan St. Spartans logot16. Michigan State (+6) 390 8-2 HR-9 LR-NR

"This team actually looks good I think I found out why they got killed by UNC and Maryland.  The Sutton factor. They are 5-0 when he plays." -Bksballer89     AP-11 CP-18

Villanova Wildcats logo18. Villanova (E) 387 11-1 HR-7 LR-NR

"Don't own a quality win yet, but the talent is there." -Trespac     AP-18 CP-16

Clemson Tigers logo19. Clemson (+5) 304 12-0 HR-3 LR-NR

"They played like a top 10 team against Miami.  They were the most purposeful, most collected team I have watched this week.  Their press forced Miami into transition play, which isn't their style, and they couldn't utilize their big men.  On offense, they executed brilliantly both in transition and half-court offense, their outside shots were falling, which rendered Miami's press useless.  That impressive performance, along with the even more impressive 12-0 record, moves them up.." -Gezemice     AP-22 CP-20

Baylor Bears logo20. Baylor (E) 292 10-1 HR-7 LR-NR

"Is there a better name in CBB than Tweety Carter?" -Trespac     AP-21 CP-22

Louisville Cardinals logo21. Louisville (-10) 168 7-2 HR-12 LR-NR

" have them this low because that's twice now they have failed to show up.  everybody gets one, but the second makes me question if they can be consistent enough to have the kind of season that's been suggested.  If they win the next three, I will feel a lot better about them." -Pittbaster     AP-19 CP-19

Minnesota Golden Gophers logo22. Minnesota (NR) 162 10-0 HR-11 LR-NR

"Minnesota had an impressive home win against Louisville, moving them into my top 25. The Gophers have yet to lose this season, but people were still hesitant to place them in their own top 25. I think this big win solidifies people's opinion on this team." -Chrisisbuck#2     AP-23 CP-23

Arizona St. Sun Devils logo23. Arizona State (+2) 157 9-1 HR-12 LR-NR

"They pulled out a squeaker against BYU, and now sit at 9-1 on the season. I think ASU will give UCLA a serious run for their money in the Pac 10." -BabyBlueUNC     AP-20 CP-17

Michigan Wolverines logo24. Michigan (-1) 150 9-2 HR-16 LR-NR

"The Wolverines are 8-2, and might already have the best resume in the Country, with wins over UCLA and Duke. Manny Harris is a stud, and should help carry Michigan to an NCAA berth this season." -BabyBlueUNC     AP-24 CP-NR

Missouri Tigers logo25. Missouri (NR) 54 9-1 HR-19 LR-NR

"Upcoming week will tell who will be bragging, Tiggers or Illini.." -KVSkubball     AP-25 CP-NR

What it all means: (First place votes), Team, (Change in rank from last week), Points, Record, Highest Rank, Lowest Rank

Breaking down the rankings:

Same old sights up top. UNC, Connecticut, Pitt and Oklahoma all remain the same from last weeks edition. The lone change comes at the #5 spot where Duke replaces Texas after a tough loss to Michigan State.

Wake Forest makes a nice jump to the #6 position and becomes the 3rd ACC team in the top 6. Gonzaga follows at #7 (up a spot..!?!) after a close loss to Connecticut over the weekend. Texas slides down to the #8 spot followed by Notre Dame. Purdue rounds out the top 10 after a solid W over previously ranked Davidson.

Syracuse slips two spots to #11 after what could be the shot of the season by Cleveland State. Georgetown continues to climb the rankings up 3 spots to #12. Ohio State and UCLA are up next followed by the Vols of Tennessee who round out the top 15.

Xavier comes in at #16, down 9 spots after their beat down last week. Michigan State is up a few spots tied with Xavier after their nice W vs UT. Villanova is next and is still searching for a signature W. An undefeated Clemson squad (haven't we heard this before?) is next at #19 followed by Baylor who seems to be treading water at the #20 spot.

Louisville is our big loser this week and drops to #21. This squad is on their way to becoming the biggest disappointment of the season. On the flip side.. up next is the team to hand Louisville their latest L, Minnesota. The Golden Gophers are undefeated and looking to make noise in the Big 10. Arizona State is next, still lingering around the top 25 after a close call vs BYU.  Michigan is up next followed by newcomer Missouri. (Blah)

That's it for this weeks edition. Hope you enjoyed it! Make sure and look for the People's Poll voting thread each week!
