Week 10 Games of the Week

Game of the Week
Texas @ Kansas State (Monday)

Texas is coming off a rough outing against Texas A&M. Now they must go into a hostile environment in Manhattan, KS to try and stay unbeaten. If they are to stay undefeated they are going to need a much better game from Dexter Pittman; he needs to not only score in the low post, but also grab offensive rebounds to give the Longhorns second chance opportunities. On the other side, Kansas State is going to look to their two star guards, Denis Clemente and Jacob Pullen. Clemente and Pullen will be looking to cause havoc on the offensive end, creating matchup problems for the Texas guards. They are also going to have to be active on the defensive end and look for opportunites for steals to lead to fast break opportunities.

Clemson @ Georgia Tech (Tuesday)

Two teams that knocked off North Carolina last week square off in an important ACC showdown. Georgia Tech has shown they can beat anybody, but they can also lose to anybody. Trevor Booker will look to establish a presence inside against the Yellow Jackets. Favors and Lawal will go against Booker and may cause problems for Clemson on the other end as well. I look for this to be a physical contest where the last one standing is going to win the game.

Northern Iowa @ Wichita St. (Tuesday)

If you haven't watched a Missouri Valley game all season now would be a good time to start. First place and undefeated in conference play, Northern Iowa goes into Wichita to take on second place Wichita State. The Missouri Valley has some very good home court advantages and Wichita is one of them, so Northern Iowa is going to have their work cut out for them. Northern Iowa doesn't have a lot of star players or high scorers, but what they do have is a very solid defense and a team that has experienced NCAA tournaments in the past. Both teams need this game for their potential at-large chances if they fail to win the Missouri Valley Tournament.

Georgetown @ Pittsburgh (Wednesday)

Austin Freeman and Greg Monroe are the keys for this Georgetown that is now struggling just a little bit. After losing a heartbreaker to Villanova the Hoyas must go on the road again to play a very hot Pittsburgh team. Brad Wanamaker is making a big difference for Pitt who is undefeated in Big East play. In order to keep up with Villanova for the conference lead this is a game Pitt must win at home. If Pitt does win, they may be a Top 5 team before you know it.

Xavier @ Temple (Wednesday)

The battle for 1st place in the A-10 has many implications. Thanks to a difficult schedule and a high RPI Temple is in line for a high seed if the NCAA tournament began today. As A-10 play gets more difficult those losses may pile up for the Owls and affect their NCAA seeding possibilities. Speaking of tough schedules, Xavier has played just as tough, if not a tougher schedule, than Temple. Heartbreaking losses to Butler and Wake Forest (both on the road) could have gotten the Muskateers down, instead they've shot out to a 4-0 start in A-10 play. Jordan Crawford is a really talented player for the Muskateers, Temple is going to have to find some way to slow him down if they want to prevent the Muskateers from stealing one on the road.

Ohio State @ West Virginia (Saturday)

An important non-conference matchup in late January pits the Buckeyes against the Mountaineers. These are two teams heading in opposite directions at the moment. With Evan Turner back the Buckeyes have reeled off 3 wins in their last 4 games. Beating the Mountaineers in Morgantown would add another resume win to the Buckeyes ledger. West Virginia on the other hand needs big games for Ebanks and Butler to win a game against a ranked opponent.

BYU @ San Diego State (Saturday)

Just like the Missouri Valley game earlier in the week, if you haven't watched a Mountain West game yet this year you need to tune into this one. BYU has only one-loss and is undefeated in conference play, but this is their first big conference road test. These teams play two very contrasting styles: BYU likes to play on the perimeter with guards Jimmer Fredette and Jackson Emery; SDSU likes to play physical and beat people on the inside with Kahwi Leonard, Billy White and Malcom Thomas. In the end this game is going to come down to the referees; yes, the referees. If they call a tight game then BYU will have the advantage, if they let them play SDSU will be able to beat up BYU on the inside and control the game. -Lobofan2003

  1. (34) KANSAS  (E) 993     13-0          HR-1 LR-3          AP-1 CP-1 GP-1

"Finally showed why they are the #1 team in the country. Absolutely dominated a pretty good Temple team from start to finish. If you're playing this team who do you try to stop: Cole Aldrich? Sherron Collins? Xavier Henry?" -Lobofan2003

  2. (3) TEXAS (E) 953     13-0          HR-1 LR-4          AP-2 CP-2 GP-3

"Solid win over Gardner-Webb was expected, but Longhorns had to sweat out a challenge from unfazed Texas A & M-Corpus Christi.  A portend of things to come, or just a blip on the radar screen?" -Wachoosay

 3. (3) KENTUCKY (+1) 903     15-0          HR-1 LR-12          AP-3 CP-3 GP-2

"Someone needs to make sure Cousins keeps his head in the game at all times. He's a beast of a talent, but tends to lose his cool." -Canuck23

 4. PURDUE (-1) 898     13-0          HR-2 LR-5          AP-4 CP-4 GP-4

"a very nice win over West Virginia. Their defense is suffocating. Their bulldog mentality could take them very far this season." -Chrisisbuck#2

   5. DUKE (+2) 838     12-1          HR-3 LR-8          AP-7 CP-7 GP-5

"Really Impress by them so far. Duke the couple of seasons seemed to be missing something, but this season Duke has it. " -Theman

 6. VILLANOVA (+2) 775     12-1          HR-5 LR-10          AP-8 CP-8 GP-6

"Ever since that loss to their rival Temple, Villanova has been on a roll. Playing behind Scotty Reynolds, this is a very dangerous team." -Chrisisbuck#2

 7. SYRACUSE (-4) 725     13-1          HR-5 LR-12          AP-5 CP-5 GP-8

"That was really horrible, especially defensively, losing to a Pitt team that hadn't beaten anybody of note. Not a good way to start Big East play, you have to defend your home court in confernce play because it is tough to win on the road." -Lobofan2003

 8. WEST VIRGINIA  (-2) 721     11-1          HR-5 LR-14          AP-6 CP-6 GP-7

'has the best SOS of the teams in my top 10, and has only lost once, on the road to my #2 team! But they've also needed Superman to show up in the last seconds of a couple of games, too" -Kvskubball

 9 . KANSAS STATE (+2) 642     13-1          HR-6 LR-16          AP-12 CP-12 GP-12

The Old Dominion lost will sting a little but Georgetown is playing very good basketball." -Jasonwells1982

 11. NORTH CAROLINA (+3) 590     11-3          HR-7 LR-NR          AP-9 CP-9 GP-9

 12. MICHIGAN STATE (-3) 542     11-3          HR-7 LR-NR          AP-11 CP-11 GP-10

"Doesn't currently rank in my top 25. They sit at #29. They've lost to the 3 best teams they've faced and beaten NOONE in my top 35 teams, and only 2 teams in the top 100." -Kvskubball

 13. MISSISSIPPI (E) 461     11-2          HR-10 LR-NR          AP-16 CP-21 GP-11

"Rebounded very strong from a difficult loss to Oral Roberts on the road by destorying Texas Tech and then winning a very physical, defensive battle with a very good Dayton team. Alford has this team to a point where they can win many different ways; tough test on Tuesday at SDSU to begin MWC play." -Lobofan2003

15. WISCONSIN
(+11) 414     12-2          HR-9 LR-23          AP-23 CP-NR GP-20

  18. Florida State (+8) 223     12-2          HR-13 LR-NR          AP-22 CP-25 GP-23

 19. Gonzaga (+7) 204     11-3          HR-12 LR-NR          AP-NR CP-22 GP-15

 20. GONZAGA (+1) 242              HR-9 LR-NR          AP-15 CP-15 GP-15

"Huge game this week vs. Duke.  I hope Bouldin can play close to 100%" -Marinoisgod

 21. TEXAS AnM (-5) 213              HR-7 LR-NR          AP-23 CP-NR GP-19

"Tough loss to New Mexico  this week.  They're a good team they'll bounce back." -Marinoisgod

 22. CINCINNATI (-3) 1445              HR-14 LR-NR          AP-25 CP-NR GP-21

"Loss to Xavier stings, but still have impressive wins from Maui." -W-catbbal21

 23. UNLV (-6) 130              HR-15 LR-NR          AP-NR CP-23 GP-NR

"Like A&M against New Mexico, the Rebels just ran into a buzzsaw in K-State on Saturday. Luckily for them and their RPI it was a "Neutral court" game at The Orleans instead of at the Thomas & Mack. I still expect this team to challenge New Mexico for the MWC crown." -Lobofan2003

 24. GEORGIA TECH (E) 97              HR-11 LR-NR          AP-22 CP-15 GP-NR

"This team is so young and they'll only get better as the season goes on." -Marinoisgod

 25. CLEMSON (NR) 86              HR-18 LR-NR          AP-NR CP-24 GP-22

So without further adieu.. I give you the 2009 Week 4 People's Poll!

 1. (38) KANSAS (E) 998              HR-1 LR-2          AP-1 CP-1 GP-1

"Kansas passes the eye test for being the top team in the country.  I am a bit leery of giving them the top spot due to lack of a body of work - but no one else has earned it this week with their performance, and they can't be faulted for UCLA not living up to the schedule booster they hoped for. " -Gezemice

 2. (1) TEXAS (E) 947              HR-1 LR-7          AP-2 CP-2 GP-3

'Not as impressive as the Jayhawks, but taking care of business in handy fashion.  They still seem to be making some adjustments; slow starts in a couple games have had me worried." -Schildkrotte

 3. VILLANOVA (E) 886              HR-2 LR-6          AP-3 CP-3 GP-4

"Wildcats handled cross-town neighbors Drexel, then made a short trip to D.C. worthwhile in a win against Maryland." -Wachoosay

 4. PURDUE (E) 865              HR-2 LR-7          AP-5 CP-5 GP-7

"Originally I thought they didn't look that good for over a half against a Wake Forest team that lost at home to William & Mary. But then that Wake Forest team went out to Spokane and won @Gonzaga. Made the win @home for Purdue look much better." -Lobofan2003

 5. SYRACUSE (+2) 818              HR-2 LR-8          AP-7 CP-6 GP-5

"The Orange baked, decorated, then devoured a couple of cupcakes in Colgate and Maine.  Like Kentucky, their first true road game is coming up at Florida this week." -Wachoosay

 6. WEST VIRGINIA (E) 810             HR-3 LR-8          AP-6 CP-7 GP-6

"Everyone made a big deal about the Mountaineers playing four games in five days when they won the 76 Classic.  No one's making a big deal about them NOT playing a game all week.  Finals time in Morgantown perhaps?" -Wachoosay

 7. (1) KENTUCKY (+2) 769              HR-1 LR-NR          AP-4 CP-4 GP-2

"For eight minutes Kentucky looked like one of the top two or three teams in the nation when they out score UNC 28-2 and then maintained that for another four minutes. But for the other 28 minutes they didn't look like they belonged in the top 50, much less top 25 when UNC out scored UK 55-31.  Neither phase seems to be the real UK, meaning they are still somewhere in between." -Nekco

 8. DUKE (-3) 647              HR-6 LR-15          AP-8 CP-8 GP-8

"Come on, Wisconsin? Really? shows their not as good as in years past, exacute a game plan against them and they can easily be beaten." -Shaunyboy

 9. TENNESSEE (+1) 637              HR-6 LR-19          AP-9 CP-9 GP-13

"Beating a lot of in state cupcakes lately but they are winning and looking dominate the only team to play Purdue in single digits so far this year." -Patrick3636

 10. FLORIDA (+5) 573              HR-7 LR-23          AP-10 CP-11 GP-10

"Matches up against Syracuse in the biggest game in the history of the Big East/SEC Invitational, two hot upstart teams somethings gotta give here." -Devofan

 11. CONNECTICUT (+2) 557              HR-7 LR-NR          AP-14 CP-12 GP-12

"Clearly only Jerome Dyson read the Jim Boeheim book How to Obliterate Ivy League Schools in Basketball because UConn needed a monster effort from Dyson to get past Harvard.  I guess we know who was looking ahead to Kentucky, don't we?" -Theriverrock

 12. NORTH CAROLINA (E) 520              HR-8 LR-NR          AP-11 CP-10 GP-9

"Young team just like Kentucky and just like Kentucky will be a dangerous team come March." -Nine5seven

 13. OHIO STATE (+1) 519              HR-9 LR-NR          AP-13 CP-15 GP-16

"It's not often that an undefeated week can be described as a disaster, but a disaster indeed it turned out to be for Ohio State.  Star guard Evan Turner, arguably the best player in the country so far this season, will miss the next eight weeks following a frightening fall during a blowout win over Eastern Michigan.  Sans Turner, it's hard to imagine the Buckeye's staying in the top 25 for too much longer." -Theriverrock

 14. MICHIGAN STATE (-6) 487              HR-8 LR-NR          AP-12 CP-14 GP-11

"Team defense has been Izzo's staple over the past decade and right now that aspect of their game just isn't clicking right now." -Crazylegs0721

 15. GEORGETOWN (+3) 384              HR-8 LR-NR          AP-15 CP-13 GP-20

"we'll know about this team this week, could be top 10 if they win both games, could never be on the poll again if they drop both" -Shaunyboy

 16. TEXAS AnM
(+4) 347              HR-8 LR-NR          AP-16 CP-18 GP-14

"At 7-1 they look to be a force in the Big 12. The only loss comes to the hands of what looks to be an excelent West Virginia team." -Patrick3636

 17. UNLV (+4) 331              HR-10 LR-24          AP-18 CP-17 GP-19

"Beat a realing Arizona team to remain undefeated, New Mexico will be a good challenge for this team later in the season they also have to look out for BYU." -Patrick3636

 18. WASHINGTON
(-7) 298              HR-9 LR-NR          AP-17 CP-16 GP-26

"I couldn't believe they lost to Texas Tech, but it was on the road! Is this really the BEST the PAC10 has to offer???" -Kvskubball

 19. CINCINNATI (E) 295              HR-9 LR-NR          AP-19 CP-19 GP-18

"I do believe that Born Ready, really is ready. Really!" -Kvsubball

XXXXXXXXX    20. WISCONSIN (NR) 231              HR-9 LR-NR          AP-20 CP-23 GP-15

"Wisconsin outhusles Duke at their house - and they both look good in the matchup.  Bo Ryan put a team on the floor that executes well and has the heart to go for the ball.  Coach K's squad has no shame in losing that game - they display an impressive team play that needs a few tweaks but definitely looks top 10." -Gezemice

 21. GONZAGA (-5) 165              HR-12 LR-NR          AP-21 CP-22 GP-17

"Gotta stick 'em somewhere. Never sure how good they really are, but can't see them out of the rankings, either." -Dcorange44

XXXXXXXXX     22. TEXAS TECH (NR) 123              HR-13 LR-NR          AP-23 CP-NR GP-25

"Beating Washington is no longer as impressive to me, but it's hard to argue with 8-0 at this point.  Oregon State is a better win than most people think." -Schildkrotte

XXXXXXXXX     23. MISSISSIPPI (NR) 115              HR-15 LR-NR         AP-25 CP-NR GP-21

"Only loss is to a Top-5 Villanova team. Can they contend in the SEC against the likes of Kentucky and Tennessee though is the question." -Lobofan2003

 24. GEORGIA TECH (NR) 88              HR-13 LR-NR          AP-24 CP-21 GP-NR

"Once again.. Tech was so impressive last week no one had a comment for them.' -Jawhk

 25. BUTLER (NR) 71              HR-18 LR-NR          AP-22 CP-20 GP-24

"Welcome back to my top 25 now go out there and beat Georgetown and Ohio State this week." -Bkballer1129

A new week brings 5 new teams to this week poll.

Kansas holds on to the top spot after a near record blow out of Alcorn State and a win over UCLA. Fellow Big 12 squad Texas remains at #2 while picking up one first place vote. Villanova holds at #3 after a solid win over Maryland and Purdue stays the same after a quality win over Wake Forest. The only newcomer to the top 5 this week, Syracuse, has a huge matchup looming with Florida.

West Virginia had a quiet week and stays in the 6th spot followed by Kentucky who is coming off a rollercoaster win over North Carolina. Duke is next after a tough loss to Wisconsin and is followed by two SEC squads, Tennessee and Florida.

Connecticut climbs 2 spots to #11 with a showdown vs Kentucky on the horizon. North Carolina somehow holds on to the 12th spot after their loss at UK. Ohio State is next and will have to live without their best player for the upcoming weeks. Plummeting Michigan State comes in down 6 spots at #14 after their 2nd loss of the season and rounding out the top 15 this week is Georgetown who seems to be quietly sneaking up the rankings.

Texas AnM continues to climb the rankings up 4 spots to #16. The Aggies are followed by UNLV who has a nice matchup with Kansas State upcoming. Washington is next after a tough loss to Texas Tech and is followed by Cincinnati who stays the same from last week. Finishing up the top 20 are the Badgers of Wisconsin who make their season debut after knocking off Duke.

Gonzaga drops 5 spot after their loss to Wake Forest and are followed by 4 newcomers to the poll. Texas Tech is first up after beating Washington twice over the weekend. The Red Raiders are followed by Mississippi and two teams who seem to flirt with the bottom of the poll every week; Georgia Tech and Butler.

 1. (38) KANSAS (E) 996             HR-1 LR-4          AP-1 CP-1 GP-1

"Holding strong at #1, have yet to show any real weakness.  Freshman Xavier Henry is their leading scorer at a tad under 17pts./game." -Iusucks

 2. (1) TEXAS (+1) 930             HR-1 LR-8          AP-2 CP-2 GP-3

"This team really is just scary. Not only do they have a lot of talent, but they have more depth on they're team than possibly any other in the league. (Side note: although Avery Bradely is the most heralded freshman for Texas, freshman Jordan Hamilton is averaging 11 points in only 18 minutes on the floor)." -Boltzfan104

 3. VILLANOVA (+1) 874             HR-2 LR-10          AP-3 CP-3 GP-4

"Still winning, but Yarou is missing very valuable game experience as he has been sitting out the last four games with a viral infection.  I'm guessing he won't be as prepared as Wright would like when the Big East schedule kicks in" -Logan Big Ears

 4. PURDUE (+1) 854             HR-2 LR-8          AP-4 CP-6 GP-7

"Went into Tennessee and got out with a one point win. One of the best wins so far in this young season! ." -Kvskubball

 5. (1) DUKE (+1) 834             HR-1 LR-9          AP-6 CP-5 GP-8

"Duke was impressive in winning the preseason NIT, although the competition wasn't particularly stiff until the championship game." -Pittbaster

 6. WEST VIRGINIA (+1) 802             HR-3 LR-9          AP-7 CP-8 GP-6

"They may not be the most talented of all the top 10 teams, but they're experienced they're physical, they're well coached, and they know how to play." -Boltzfan104

 7. SYRACUSE (+1) 776             HR-2 LR-12          AP-8 CP-7 GP-5

"What better way to celebrate your Coaches vs. Cancer Classic championship than beating up on a bunch of smart kids?  The Orange did just that this past week, pounding Ivy League representatives Cornell and Columbia." -Theriverrock

 8. MICHIGAN STATE (-6) 690             HR-5 LR-13          AP-9 CP-9 GP-11

"Tom Izzo and team lay an early egg against a very tough and underrated Florida Gators." -Iusucks

 9. KENTUCKY (E) 672             HR-2 LR-NR          AP-5 CP-4 GP-2

"Those who think UK is a shoe-in for the Sweet 16 might be in for a rude awakening. No doubt the freshmen is good but Carmelo's don't come around every day and this team so far does not remotely look like a Sweet 16 team to me." -Kingbd2

 10. TENNESSEE (E) 605             HR-7 LR-19          AP-11 CP-12 GP-14

"By far and away the best team in the SEC despite the loss to Purdue." -Crazylegs0721

 11. WASHINGTON (+1) 579             HR-7 LR-NR          AP-12 CP-10 GP-12

"Struggled with Montana? Doesn't look like a top team having struggled with some cupcakes early in the season, but nobody else seems to want to move up either." -Lobofan2003

 12. NORTH CAROLINA (+2) 577             HR-7 LR-15          AP-10 CP-11 GP-9

"Look bad against Nevada got Michigan State and Kentucky this week they better hope they don't lost both or could be looking outside of the Top 25." -Jasonwells1982

 13. CONNECTICUT (-2) 482             HR-9 LR-NR          AP-14 CP-13 GP-13

"A bad 10-15 minute stretch bridging both halves cost the Huskies a chance to win the Pre-Season NIT over Duke." -Wachoosay

 14. OHIO STATE (+4) 432             HR-11 LR-NR          AP-15 CP-15 GP-16

"If there's a better player in college basketball right now than Evan Turner.....guess what, I don't even need to finish this question.  There isn't a better player in college basketball right now than Evan Turner.  Turner, like Ice Cube, messed around this week and had yet another triple double, leading the Buckeyes to a pair of blowout wins." -Theriverrock

 15. FLORIDA (NR) 402             HR-9 LR-NR          AP-13 CP-17 GP-10

"What a stunner against MSU. The team got down by 7 late in the game and managed to pull out the victory. The team shot free throws extremely well and that is what won them the game. That wasn't their only signature win this week they also took it to a pretty good Florida State team." -Patrick3636

 16. GONZAGA (+9) 354             HR-5 LR-24          AP-17 CP-16 GP-15

"Gonzaga has played two great games against Cincinnati and Wisconsin this week, showing staying power against what might have been the two most underrated teams in the country." -Gezemice

 17. CLEMSON (+2) 230             HR-14 LR-NR          AP-18 CP-19 GP-20

"Won two games in the 76 Classic. I salute Purnell, for finally testing his club in November! Was he trying to scratch the Seven Year Itch?" -Kvskubball

 18. GEORGETOWN (+3) 228             HR-11 LR-NR          AP-16 CP-14 GP-21

"Haven't really played a good team this year but the talent is there." -Patrick3636

 19. CINCINNATI (NR) 211             HR-15 LR-NR          AP-22 CP-24 GP-19

"Lance Stephenson's is arguably the most impressive freshman I've seen this year even if the numbers don't show it yet.  Cincy is an all-around solid team." -Whoridin99

 20. TEXAS AnM (NR) 190             HR-9 LR-NR          AP-19 CP-22 GP-18

'can you say underrated?  They waxed two highly ranked teams this week - Clemson decisively, Minnesota in a tight one.  I only caught a few minutes of the Clemson game but the Aggies looked as good as any other top 10 team. Pomeroy ratings #8, score ratings #4 - who says they are not top 10?  I can't find a reason." -Gezemice

 21. UNLV (NR) 155             HR-15 LR-NR          AP-24 CP-21 GP-26

"Lon Kruger's Runnin' Rebels never trailed Louisville on Saturday, leading the Cards by as many as 19 before hanging on for a 5-point win.  One of the deeper teams in America, ten Rebels average better than 5 points per game." Theriverrock

 22. OKLAHOMA STATE (NR) 137             HR-12 LR-NR          AP-NR CP-NR GP-NR

"Travis Ford's team scored double-digit wins over Bradley and Utah to win the Las Vegas Classic.  Could the Cowboys challenge Kansas and Texas in the Big 12 this year?" -Wachoosay

 23. PORTLAND (NR) 136             HR-16 LR-NR          AP-25 CP-NR GP-NR

"Had a great weekend until getting blown out by West Virginia in the 76 Classic Title game. I still think this is a very good team and may very well take the WCC title away from Gonzaga this year." -Lobofan2003

 24. LOUISVILLE (-8) 113             HR-10 LR-NR          AP-20 CP-18 GP-NR

"I would have dropped them completely if one more team had impressed me more this weekend. Still a top 25 team despite the loss @ UNLV." -Pittbaster

 25. MARQUETTE (NR) 95             HR-14 LR-NR          AP-NR CP-NR GP-NR

"Finished second in the Old Spice Classic, losing to Florida State by a point!" -Kvskubball

Breaking down the rankings:

Thanksgiving tournaments brought a big shakeup this week with 7 teams new to the poll!

Still holding strong at #1, Kansas has a nothing to win everything to lose game this weekend @ UCLA (one of the few times UCLA may get mentioned all season).  Up next is Texas and Villanova who slide up a spot after Michigan State’s loss. Purdue comes in at #4 after a solid win over Tennessee while Duke makes their first appearance of the season in the top 5 after handling Connecticut.

West Virginia sits at #6 after winning the 76 classic followed by last week’s big mover Syracuse. Michigan State tumbles 6 spots to #8 after their 3 point loss to Florida. Kentucky is next at #9 after avoiding another upset last week. Rounding out this week’s top 10 is Tennessee who rebounded with a win over Charlotte after their first loss of the season to Purdue.

Washington jumps up a spot to #11 this week. The Huskies are followed by North Carolina who was able to escape a pesky Nevada squad while picking up Roy’s 600th win. Connecticut drops 2 spots to #13 after their loss to Duke and is followed by Ohio State. Florida (remember them?) looks to jump back into the national spotlight after their win over Michigan State and makes their debut at #15.

Now this is where it gets interesting. Only 4 teams from last week’s poll are currently residing in the next 10 spots. Up first is Gonzaga who benefits from the carnage and jumps 9 spots to #16. Clemson is next and actually moved up 2 spots despite a loss to Texas AnM. Georgetown is next followed by Big East newcomer Cincinnati who is coming off a nice week with wins over Vanderbilt and Maryland. Texas AnM rounds out the top 20 jumping into the poll after a nice win over Clemson.

UNLV is next at #21 after knocking off Louisville. The Run’n Rebs are followed by undefeated Oklahoma State and upstart Portland. The Pilots made a run at the 76 classic crown knocking off UCLA (by 27!) and Minnesota before bowing out to eventual champs West Virginia. Louisville clings to their ranking at #24 and is followed by another newcomer this week; Marquette.

Breaking down the rankings:

With CBB now in full swing we finally get some shakeup in the poll!

Last week’s top 5 remains unchanged with the top 2 squads narrowly escaping early losses to underrated foes. Kansas survives a 2 point win over Memphis while Michigan State escapes an upset vs Gonzaga. Texas stays at #3 this week after feasting on cupcakes (Pittman better watch out) while Villanova hangs on to the fourth spot after hanging on vs George Mason and Dayton. Purdue rounds out the top 5 with a big game tonight vs Tennessee.

Duke continues to roll and jumps up 3 spots to #6 followed by West Virginia. Our biggest mover of the week, Syracuse, comes in at #7 after being unranked last week. Impressive wins vs California and North Carolina were even enough to garner the Cuse a first place vote (seriously..?). Wesley Johnson just might be the best in the Big East, which has to have Iowa State fans feeling sick. Can you imagine an ISU team with Brackens and Johnson?  Kentucky slides two spots to #9 while they try to get over some freshman growing pains. The Cats are followed by Tennessee who beat Mary’s school for the blind by 150 last week.

Connecticut drops a spot to #11 after uninspiring wins vs Colgate and Hofstra. The Huskies are followed by Washington who jumps a spot to #12. Butler slides 2 spot after a close call vs Evansville. North Carolina comes in as our big loser this week down 8 spots. UNC almost blew a big lead vs Ohio State before being dominated by Syracuse. Looks like the UNC frosh need to learn to play with a target on their back.. and against a zone. Michigan finishes up the top 15 this week.

Louisville is next followed by Minnesota who has a matchup with Butler looming. Ohio State drops three spots after a close loss vs UNC and a nice win vs California. Clemson who has looked impressive early (don’t they always?) comes in at #19 followed by Illinois who makes a nice jump up 4 spots from last week.

Georgetown climbs a notch after a close call with Temple. Seems the Hoyas are already trying to prove that they are overrated. Newcomer Maryland comes in at #22. The Terps look to creep back on to the national scene behind potential ACC player of the year Greivis Vasquez. The next two spots are head scratchers. Freshman lead Georgia Tech stays the same after a loss against George Mason (what!?) and Dayton drops three spots yet remains in the poll after two losses last week. Granted they were solid losses (Is there really such a thing?) one was to top 5 Villanova and the other to a fringe top 25 team; Kansas State. One would think there may be a more deserving team for the Flyer’s spot. Namely the team they lost too.. Kansas State (I feel dirty for saying that). Rounding out the poll this week is Gonzaga. The Zags continue to prove they are relevant to the CBB scene after nearly upsetting Michigan State on the road.
