Today's Song - Unchain My Heart - Ray Charles

Comments - Phenomenal song.  Growing up in the 80's and 90's, it's embarrassing to say that I knew Ray Charles more for his "you got the right one baby" Pepsi commercials than for his actual music.  Sure I knew Georgia on My Mind and Hit The Road Jack but until the Jamie Foxx movie came out I'm ashamed to say that I didn't appreciate his music as fully as I should have.  I have since repented and love this song.

Before I get to today's song I want to talk a bit about my iPod on random.  Normally it is truly random and spews forth the songs on it in an incomprehensible order (I've actually had a Ministry song followed by Ella Fitzgerald before) but occasionally it puts together a run of songs that sound like they belong together.  I guess that it is a bit like the infinite number of monkeys eventually typing Shakespeare but anyway...here is what I had going today - I'm the One by the Descendents then Automatic by Less Than Jake then Keep Fishin' by Weezer then The Dirty Glass by Dropkick Murphys then Lyin' *ss B*tch by Fishbone.  Nice run huh?  It actually flows like a playlist that was intentionally created.  Anyway that brings me to...

Today's Song - Lyin' *ss B*tch - Fishbone

Comments - The greatest concert that I ever saw was Fishbone at the Middle East Downstairs in Boston.  The energy at that show was just incredible.  Les Claypool from Primus came out and played on one song and Angelo Moore is crazy which makes for great live music sometimes.  At one point he was literally hanging from the rafters.  Awesome.  Anyway, this song for some reason always reminds me of something from a musical.  I'm not sure if it's the female vocals (I think it's Lisa Grant singing) or the La la las in the chorus but it always reminds me of something from Les Mis.  Anyway, if you don't know this song, check it out.

Today's song - Hoochie Coochie Man - Muddy Waters

Comments - I am reminded of a cute story of my daughter whenever I hear Muddy Waters.  She was about 2 years old and I had put on a Muddy Waters disc thinking that she might like the bluesy guitar.  I think that I put on Mannish Boy.  I said "What do you think sweetie?"  She thought about it for a second and with a seriousness and deliberateness that only a two year old could pull off said "Very NOT good."  She has since come around and likes the blues but I still laugh every time I think about it.  Kids are so cute.

Today's Song - Da Sh*t - The Game

Comments - Yes I still listen to rap music.  No I don't have any plans to grow up and act my age.  The Game's stuff, I think, is well constructed, uses good samples, and tells an interesting story (which I think is the point).  I do think that he tends to be a bit too fixated with Dre but I guess if you grew up idolizing someone, made your first record with him, and then had all that fall apart it might be worth writing/rapping about.  Anyway this post actually has some small relation to sports as Jayceon Taylor (aka The Game) was briefly a member of the Washington State Cougars Basketball team before being booted for drug allegations.  Interesting side note.  Until tomorrow.

December 1st, 2008

The songs switched between when I got off the elevator and the time I got to my desk so I'll comment on both.

Todays songs - Human Behaviour - Bjork    and     With the Quickness - Bad Brains

Comments - I think that Bjork's music is as great as she herself is wierd (who remembers the swan dress?).  I remember seeing this video for the first time and thinking WTF was that?  A stuffed bear chasing her through the woods?  And then of course I promptly went out and bought Debut at my local mall.  BTW as a bit of an aside, I absolutely love the Icelandic accent.  I think that it somehow makes her seem cuter than she really is.  As for Bad Brains, they are one of my top five favorite bands of all times and nearly any punk music that comes out today that is worth anything (I do not include Pop Punk crap like Simple Plan and Good Charlotte in that category BTW) was influenced in some way by Bad Brains.  The first place that I heard them was on the Pump Up The Volume soundtrack doing a cover of MC5's Kick Out The Jams with Henry Rollins on vocals.  I can truly say that after hearing that song everything else seemed somehow weaker by comparison.  Anyway, it forced me to seek out more of there stuff, most of which is incredible (especially the self titled album and the album I Against I - my two favorites).  The rest as they say is history.  Enough for now.  Until tomorrow.

PS - I hope that everyone had a happy Thanksgiving

Today's Song - You're No Rock N' Roll Fun - Sleater Kinney

My Comments - I love Sleater Kinney.  I was very disappointed when they went on permanent hiatus a couple years ago.  This song is on the incredible album All Hands On The Bad One, which is my favorite of theirs.  I think that Corrin Tucker's vocals are amazing.  She sounds like no one else.  Her voice always seems to convey some sort of urgency.  Alright that's enough for now.  Catch you all after the holiday.  Happy Thanksgiving.

Tuesday Nov 25th

Alright I'm gonna try something new for me.  I'm going to write about what song is playing on my iPod when I walk into the office.  I'll try to write something every work day while I eat my breakfast.  Let's see how long this lasts.

Today's song - Love Rears Up It's Ugly Head - Living Colour

My thoughts - This was one of my favorite bands when I was growing up.  I never understood why they really didn't get more pub, although I think it may have something to do with the second single they released - Glamour Boys - which in my opinion is the worst song on that album, but I digress.  This song is one of my favorites of theirs.  It's bluesy, catchy, funny without being cheesy, and it's something that everyone can relate to.  It was on the album Time's Up if I'm not mistaken, which incidently, was the first CD that I ever purchased (I make that distinction b/c the first I ever owned was a bit more embarrassing and a gift - let's just say that it rhymes with Manilla Rice).  Alright that's enough for now.  I encourage anyone to respond and let me know what you think of this song (if you've ever heard it) or let me know what you were listening to.  More tomorrow (hopefully).
