Trades, rare talent will be the story today

NFL front office executives are just like the rest of us.

They're eagerly waiting for the draft to begin and are getting a little fidgety.

Expect to see several trades happen today as teams move up, down and all around in the second and third frames.

I had considered updating my second round mock today, but I've been told by numerous league sources to "not bother" due to the fact that the trades are going to make any predicting of which players might go to which team an exercise in futility.

Many talent evaluators believe today's two rounds are actually where the 2010 draft stands out from past years. There is simply another 10-12 players who are likely to go off the board quickly that in most years would have made the first round. Note the lack of running backs... I've been told to expect a run on that position in the mid to late portion of the second round through the third, with Toby Gerhart, Montario Hardesty, Ben Tate and Dexter McCluster likely going during this time.

Here is how one NFL executive listed the top 20 players available:

QB Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame
QB Colt McCoy, Texas
WR Golden Tate, Notre Dame
WR Arrelious Benn, Illinois
WR Damian Williams, USC
TE Rob Gronkowski, Arizona
OT Charles Brown, USC
OT Bruce Campbell, Maryland
OT/OG Rodger Saffold, Indiana
OT/OG Vladimir Ducasse, Massachusetts
DT Brian Price, UCLA
DT Linval Joseph, East Carolina
DT Terrance Cody, Alabama
DE Carlos Dunlap, Florida
DE/OLB Sergio Kindle, Texas
DE/OLB Everson Griffen, USC
DE/OLB Koa Misi, Utah
OLB Daryl Washington, TCU
FS Taylor Mays, USC
FS Nate Allen, South Florida
