OL prospects have ultimate mentor in Gibbs

A decade ago, Alex Gibbs was the architect of the Broncos' zone-blocking offensive line.

He was eight seasons into his second stint as the Broncos' offensive line coach, and his name was at the center of any discussion regarding the Broncos' emphasis on controversial cut-blocking techniques. Three teams and multiple retirements -- and un-retirements -- later, Gibbs has scaled back to training offensive linemen for the NFL Draft.

Now 71, Gibbs trains draft-eligible offensive linemen. One of his pupils is Auburn guard Brandon Mosley, who noted that Gibbs had helped correct his stance. Until those recent sessions with Gibbs, Mosley was unaware of any issues in that aspect of his game.

"My pass sets are a lot different from some college teams. The NFL is more of a vertical set. I kind of sat out to about a 45-degree angle," Mosley said at the Scouting Combine, when asked what he'd learned from Gibbs that he'd never been taught before. "We work on three-point stances, too, and we never did that at Auburn."

Glenn runs unofficial 4.96 40-yard dash

Georgia’s Cordy Glenn weighed in as one of the largest offensive line prospects at the Combine, tipping the scale at 345 pounds. And after his 40-yard dash, he might also be considered one of the most athletic. Glenn ran an unofficial 4.96 in his first 40-yard dash attempt Saturday morning, including a 1.76 yard 10-yard split.

Glenn is expected to participate in every drill this week, already lifting 31 times on the bench, an impressive feat for a player with 36” arms. He played most of his collegiate career inside at guard before moving out to left tackle as a senior in 2011. Scouts question whether or not he can protect the blindside at the next level, but Glenn helped answer some of those concerns with a positive week at the Senior Bowl. If he performs well athletically in drills this week, showing NFL scouts he can play outside in the NFL, Glenn’s draft stock could jump into the top-20 discussion.

Glenn currently ranks as NFLDraftScout.com’s No. 2 rated guard.

Combine Results: 40-yard Dash

NFL.com is reporting 40-yard dash times from the Combine, first an "unofficial" handheld time and later an "official" time provided from National Football Scouting.

NFLDraftScout.com explained the 40-yard dash timing process, along with verified all-time Combine records. Those who participate in the 40 actually run twice, and on each run they are timed by two hand-held stopwatches and one electronic timer (that is actually initiated by hand on the player's first movement). Combine data put together for NFL teams by National Scouting includes all six of those times for each player, but no single official time, but that information isn't typically known for a week or two following the conclusion of the Combine.

Of note: of the 36 offensive linemen NDS noted unofficial and official times for, 33 had slower times in the official listing, three were the same and none were listed as faster than their unofficial timing. Sixteen players had an official time at least a tenth of a second slower than their official time, led by Georgia's Cordy Glenn, who dropped 0.19 seconds from a blistering 4.96 for a 345-pound man to 5.15.

Feeling better, OT Martin to do positional drills

Stanford offensive tackle Jonathan Martin - NFLDraftScout.com's No. 14 overall rated prospect for the 2012 draft - appears to have gotten over the food poisoning or flu-like symptoms he had experienced in his final days at Athletes Performance and will be doing the positional drills today at the Combine.

"I just can't sit there and watch [the positional drills]. That's not me," Martin said.

Feeling less than himself, Martin had initially told the media and 20+ teams he's interviewed with this week that he would not be doing any athletic drills.  However, after starting to feel better yesterday and wanting to show scouts that his competitive streak, the Stanford product decided this morning that he would take advantage of the audience and perform.

Having taken the past several days off of his normal training regimen for the 40-yard dash, three-cone drill and the battery of other athletic tests due to his illness, Martin will not be performing in these drills Sunday.

Instead, he'll be waiting to finish that portion of his workout at Stanford's March 22 Pro Day. That workout could be the most heavily attended Pro Day of the year. Not only will scouts want to see Martin perform these timed and measured athletic drills, quarterback Andrew Luck is saving his throwing session for the Pro Day. Tight end Coby Fleener, a potential first round pick, who wasn't able to participate this week due to a high ankle sprain suffered in the Fiesta Bowl and NFLDraftScout.com's top-rated guard, David DeCastro, are the primary members of a strong Stanford class that could force representatives from every NFL team to attend the workout in Palo Alto.

Martin is our third-rated offensive tackle of the draft behind Southern Cal's Matt Kalil and Iowa's Riley Reiff. Each are expected to be among the first 20 picks of the draft and some believe each could contend for top 10 honors. Martin is viewed by some as more athletic than either Kalil or Reiff and therefore is getting higher grades based on his upside from some clubs. There is considered to be a steep drop-off at left tackle following these three junior prospects.

Osweiler joins QB list not throwing at Combine

Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler is joining Stanford's Andrew Luck, Baylor's Robert Griffin III and Texas A&M's Ryan Tannehill as quarterbacks who will not be throwing in front of scouts at the 2012 Combine.

The foursome make up the top quarterback prospects on NFLDraftScout.com's board, leaving a rather ho-hum group of passers left to throw to receivers during Sunday's throwng session.

The NFL can't be thrilled with the fact that arguably the four most intriguing quarterback talents in the draft will not be throwing on the first day the league is opening up the Combine to fans.

The shorter-than-expected Osweiler told me Friday as he was walking out of Lucas Oil Stadium that he would not be throwing. He did not provide a reason and unfortunately, I was unable to ask further questions due to a pre-scheduled radio commitment.

Osweiler surprised many with his decision to leave Arizona State after only one starting season. He was very impressive in 2011, however, setting the ASU record by completing 63.2% of his passes for 4,036 yards -- another school record. Osweiler threw twice as many touchdowns (26) and interceptions (13) in 2011 and though he left ASU following the team's bowl loss to Boise State in the Las Vegas Bowl, he had a strong game personally, completing 30 of 47 passes for a career-high 397 yards and two touchdowns against one interception.

Arizona State's Pro Day is currently scheduled for March 24.
