Top-25 Week 8

So this week it was Alabama’s turn to struggle. Other polls keep swapping the top 3 teams around. I don’t see the point. Florida, Texas, and Alabama are the top 3 teams. The one who will be one top will be sorted out by the end of the season. So until one of these team loses, I’m going to stay the course.

LW= Last weeks ranking.

1. Florida - Tebow: saving the world one football game at a time. LW-1
2. Texas - Feasted on dead Tigers. LW-2
3. Alabama - Or is it Ali Baba? They so stole this game. LW-3
4. Cincinnati - No Pike? No Problem! LW-4
5. USC - Not surprised this one was close. The Beavers always play the Trojans tough. Might
want to sent out a search party for the defense though. LW-5
6. Iowa - Was TCU’s win over BYU better that Iowa’s over Penn St. a few weeks ago? I don’t
    think so. LW-7
7. TCU - Nice beat down you administered to BYU. But Florida St.’s been there done that.
    LW-8
8. Boise St. - Enjoy your vacation in Hawaii? LW-6
9. Oregon - Offense starting to really click. Punt block for a TD just the icing on the cake. LW-11
10. LSU - Can’t wait for the LSU - Alabama game on Nov. 7. Should be an exciting game if you
like games that end with a 6-3 score. LW-10
11. Georgia Tech - 7.62 Full Metal Yellow Jacket! LW-12
12. Penn St. - Hey! We finally beat a team that doesn’t totally suck. LW-13
13. Oklahoma St. - Still the best team in Oklahoma. Not that it means that much these days.
      LW-14
14. Virginia Tech - All you ACC teams are just imitating. So won’t a real ACC team, please
stand up, please stand up? LW-15
15. Pittsburgh - You know, I thought about inserting yet another  moustache joke here but, nah.
      Never mind. LW-18
16. Houston - Your Miner mistakes may be overlooked if UTEP continues to improve. LW-17
17. Utah - Probably the last team that stands in the way of an undefeated season for TCU. LW-19
18. West Virginia - Should have no problem helping South Florida continue their mid-season
meltdown. They’re helpful like that. LW-22
19. Miami, Fl - Well, the Fighting Schizophrenics are off their meds again. That happens all the
time. They think they’re better and stop taking their meds. There’s a lesson in here
      somewhere. LW-9
20. Ohio St. - Your not getting past good one loss teams or 2 loss teams with a win verses a
ranked opponent until you actually beat someone. LW-24
21. South Carolina - Is there even a hint of doubt that the Gamecocks next game at Tennessee
will be hard fought and very close down to the last play? LW-23
22. Arizona - The other Stoops team. LW-NR
23. Notre Dame - Making yet another Bi-weekly appearance on my poll. LW-NR
24. Navy - Why? Why not? LW-NR
25. California - Have the Golden Bears finally figured out hibernating season is over? LW-NR

Still trying to get into the country club: Oklahoma, Central Michigan, Ole Miss, BYU, Kansas, Rutgers.

Membership revoked: BYU, South Florida, Texas Tech, Kansas.

Final thoughts: I’m excited and nervous about the USC, Oregon game. Turns out this game is going to be as important as I thought it would be before the season started. I’m not much of a smack talker. You eat less crow that way. So all I will say is GO DUCKS!!!

Top-25 Week 7

If you love close games, this was your week. If you prefer top teams to dominate, well...you might not have liked this week so much. Personally I like parity. There is nothing more annoying than knowing how every football game is going to turn out before it starts. So here it is my top-25 for week 7

LW= Last week ranking.

1. Florida - Complain all you want about these close games of theirs, but their a lot more fun to
    watch. LW-1
2. Texas - Face it people they are going to keep winning ugly. So get used to it. LW-2
3. Alabama - Note to opponents. Sell out on run make McElroy beat you. LW-3
4. Cincinnati - Mmmm...that’s some mighty tasty cool-aid. LW-5
5. USC - I think the Trojan’s kept it close on purpose because they don’t want Weis fired. They
like playing a Weis coached team every year. Smart. LW-7
6. Boise St. - Is it me or are people searching feverishly for a reason to move Boise St. down?
Yes they won a close game. So did Florida, Texas, Alabama, USC. Do we see a pattern?
    LW-6
7. Iowa - Guess they’re for real. Bet the Hawkeyes wish that Norther Iowa would hurry up and
    become an FBS team. LW-10
8. TCU - The only Top-10 team without a win against a ranked opponent. LW-9
9. Miami, Fl - Maybe the best team in the ACC. Huh?! That can’t be right. LW-12
10. LSU - (This space for rent.) LW-11
11. Oregon - People keep pointing forward to the game verses USC. As far as I’m concerned
that game is irrelevant until they’re done with Washington. LW-13
12. Georgia Tech - Plays Virginia for the lead in the Costal division of the ACC. If you don’t
think their’s something crazy going on in the ACC please reread the previous sentence.
      LW-20
13. Penn St. - Next game verses Michigan should be interesting, kind of. LW-15
14. Oklahoma St. - Many left them for dead when they lost to Houston. Then again when lost
Dez Bryant. But they just keep rising from the dead. LW-16
15. Virginia Tech - Lucky I didn’t move you down more. Someone should have told me that
Hokies were allergic to Yellow Jackets. LW-4
16. BYU - How do Mormons feel about Frogs? Plague anyone? LW-21
17. Houston - Houston, Houston what to do with you. That Miner train wreck you had earlier
this season is going hang around your neck like a boat anchor. LW-24
18. Pittsburgh - I’m confused. Exactly why did Pitt loss to N.C. St. N.C. St.’s only wins so far are
Murray St., Gardner-Webb, and Pitt. So many teams this year with one very ugly loss.
      LW-NR
19. Utah - The Utes are undefeated in conference play. They could still sneak up and snatch the
      Mountain West championship. LW-NW
20. South Florida - I’m not going to punish them too much for losing to an undefeated top-10
      team. LW-17
21. Texas Tech - 5-2 with close losses to ranked teams. And frankly there were some very bad
calls in the Texas game. They could win the rest of their games. LW-NR
22. West Virginia - The Mountaineers have a great offense but have fumbled and lost the ball 11
times this year. And have a turnover ratio of -5. Unacceptable! But they fumbled and lost it
only once in each of the past 2 games. If they can control their own butterfingers then WVU
will have a great season indeed. LW-NR
23. South Carolina - South Carolina is a good team that needs just a few things to make it to the
next level. They gave Alabama a great game. The difference in that game wasn’t Alabama’s
defense. It was Mark Ingram. No Mark Ingram and the Gamecocks might have won. LW-19
24. Ohio St. - Looks like the Sweater Vest has some chinks in it. Watch out! When a perennially
good team shows some weakness teams start gunning for it hard. I.E. Michigan, Notre
      Dame. LW-8
25. Kansas - The only difference between Kansas and some of the other teams that won close
games is they didn’t quite pull theirs out. Well I guess that’s a big difference. LW- 14

Teams I will rank when 19-25 loses next week: Arizona, Oregon St., Boston College, California, Central Michigan, Notre Dame, Idaho.

Slacker dropouts: Nebraska, Oklahoma, Missouri, Notre Dame

Final thoughts: One of the biggest games of this week is in the Mountain West Conference, BYU @ TCU. Yep I said it the Mountain West. That’s how a conference knows they have arrived. People actually care about your inter conference games. Now if Boise St. would just join you...

Top-25 Week 6

Florida or Alabama? Alabama or Florida? What about Texas? To me the top-3 are interchangeable. No way I’m going to move a Florida team that beat a top-5 team down. And I’m going to give Texas another week at 2 and see what they do against Oklahoma. 20-25 at this point are a guessing game. Think I should have put someone else in at 20-25? Tell me. Other than that enjoy.

LW= Last weeks ranking.

1. Florida - Beat a top-5 team. Yea it wasn’t as pretty as some would like. You want a beauty
contest go vote for Miss America. LW-1
2. Texas - Their next 2 games against Oklahoma and Missouri should answer many questions
     about them. LW-2
3. Alabama - Ready to step up if Florida or Texas falters. LW-3
4. Virginia Tech - Tyrod (Houdini) Taylor is ready to take his magic act on the road to play the
Yellow Jackets. Do yellow jackets like magic? LW-5
5. Cincinnati - Ready to run with the Bulls. LW-6
6. Boise St. - Next game is one of the very few small tests left for the Broncos, @ Tulsa. LW-7
7. USC - Notre Dame fans say they’re ready for prime time. Here come the Trojans. Time to put
    up or shut up.LW-8
8. Ohio St. - It a good thing they have a good defense. 8 1st downs against Wisconsin!? Ugh!
Even LSU had more 1st downs than that against Florida. LW-9
9. TCU - Sneaking their way up the top-10. LW-10
10. Iowa - As long as they don’t have any more easy games they will be fine. They’re great in the
      big games. LW-12
11. LSU - Nice defense. Now about that offense... LW-4
12. Miami, Fl - The Bipolarricanes have another cupcake on their schedule. Will they be manic
      or depressive. LW-11
13. Oregon - Went on the road without their starting QB and came up with a win. LW-13
14. Kansas - Dorothy and the Jayhawks were all most done in by the Cyclones. Next week
they’re off to see the wizard. Not really it’s just the Colorado Nepotisms. No magic there.
      LW-14
15. Penn St. - Finished their tour of the teams of Illinois. LW-15
16. Oklahoma St. - Questions to ponder. Why do people lie first and ask questions later? Why
would a young receiver want to hang with an old DB. Wasn’t it Dion’s job in the NFL to
      make receivers lives miserable? LW-16
17. South Florida - Big East title goes through here. LW-17
18. Nebraska - If you only going to play 15 minutes of a football game. Make it the last 15.
      LW-24
19. South Carolina - Let’s if we can find a pattern here. All of the SEC teams I have ranked have
smothering defenses and rely on them heavily to win. Yep there’s a pattern here alright.
     LW-21
20. Georgia Tech - Giving up 44 points to Virginia Tech next week, like they did with Florida St.
      ain’t gonna cut it. LW-25
21. BYU - You’re in the top-25 again. But you’re going to have to beat TCU if you want to move
up much from here. I can still smell that rotten egg you laid at home versus Florida St.
       LW-NR
22. Oklahoma - Properly ranked right behind the team that beat you. LW-NR
23. Missouri - Still a good one loss team. LW-19
24. Houston - You’re rotten egg smells even more. But nobody seems to want to be ranked here.
      LW-NR
25. Notre Dame - I put them here to again experience the joy of pulling them off when they lose
      to USC. LW-NR

Sir, we have 6 new contacts coming in fast: West Virginia, Oregon St., Auburn, Utah, Pittsburgh, and Arkansas.

Crashed and burned last week: Ole Miss, Auburn, Stanford, Wisconsin.

Final thoughts: This week we have on tap Oklahoma @ Texas, Cincinnati @ South Florida, South Carolina @ Alabama, Iowa @ Wisconsin, Missouri @ Oklahoma St, Virginia Tech @ Georgia Tech, Texas Tech @ Nebraska, & Boise St. @ Tulsa. My friends there is going to be an upset somewhere in here. Maybe 2 or 3. Watch for a big shake up in next weeks Top-25.

Top-25 Week 5

Now that we’re starting to enter the meat of the schedule the games get harder. In the next twoweeks lots of Top-25 teams play each other. Not the least of which of these is Florida @ LSU, Alabama @ Ole Miss, and on Thursday we have Nebraska @ Missouri. Putting together next week poll should be interesting.

Here is my poll enjoy. I welcome any and all comments.

LW= Last week.

1. Florida - Finally they will be tested! LSU appears ready for a dogfight. Is Florida? LW-1
2. Texas - Texas beats UTEP 64-7. UTEP beats Houston 58-41. What’s wrong with this picture?
I’m sorry was I supposed to be talking about Texas? LW-2
3. Alabama - Florida plays LSU and Bama plays Ole Miss. It’ll take only one upset to shake up
    the top 3. LW-3
4. LSU - Mmmm. 1 vs. 4. Nice! LW-7
5. Virginia Tech - You struggled against Duke? Uh...check the calendar again. It’s not basketball
    season. LW-4
6. Cincinnati - Their upcoming date @ South Florida on the 15th is looming large. LW-6
7. Boise St. - They won 34-16 against FCS UC Davis with the starters in the whole game.
    Unacceptable! LW-5
8. USC - Note to Cals’ remaining opponents: sell out to stop run, win game. In that order. LW-9
9. Ohio St. - Winner of OSU - Whisky game gets control of Big-10. LW-10
10. TCU - Blocking with out a helmet on!? These guys are either crazy or crazy good! LW-11
11. Miami, Fl - This years official yo-yo team. LW-23
12. Iowa - Wish these guys would decide whether or not they want to be good. LW-14
13. Oregon - Bad idea of the week: Use you game against the Ducks to break in a new freshman
      QB. LW-18
14. Kansas - Jayhawks and most of the rest of the Big-12 took the week off. Yet another effective
method of avoiding needless loses.  Bet the Sooners wish they would have too. LW-13
15. Penn St. - You know? I think Illinois absolutely sucks. No really! I’m sure of it now. LW-15
16. Oklahoma St. - Best team in Oklahoma. Snicker...snicker...HA HA HA HA HA!!! LW-16
17. South Florida - No Grothe? No problem. LW-24
18. Ole Miss - New plan. Beat Alabama save season. The flushing sound you hear is the Rebs’
season circling the bowl. No I’m not talking about a BCS bowl. LW-21
19. Missouri - Uh...I got nothing. LW-19
20. Auburn - Hope the Tigers have enjoyed the season so far. It gets harder from here. LW-NR
21. South Carolina - Congratulations you are the 7th SEC team that I have ranked some time this
      Season. LW-NR
22. Stanford - USC says they are the Team to beat in the PAC-10 but they play @ Oregon.
Oregon says they are the team to beat but they play @ Stanford. Stanford says they are the
team to beat but they play @ USC. Nice little circle of love, don’t you think? LW-NR
23. Wisconsin - If they don’t beat the Buckeyes their time in the TOP-25 will be quite short
      indeed. LW-NR
24. Nebraska - Plays Missouri on Thursday. Winner stays in the Top-25. LW-25
25. Georgia Tech - Could still make a lot of noise in the ACC. Buzzing noise, get it? LW-NR

Stuck playing D&D with a bunch of dorks while there’s a great party going on next door: BYU, Oklahoma, Arizona, Boston College.

Slacker dropouts: Oklahoma (can’t rank a 2 loss team yet), Houston (Whoever you’re defensive  coordinator is needs fired. And bench the starters too), Georgia, Cal, Michigan.

Special mention: Idaho. They were my upset pick of the week. Idaho is 4-1. They beat
Colorado St. 31-29.

My upset pick of this week is W. Kentucky over Florida International. WKU is a 7 point underdog.

Final comments: Yet another non-BCS team, Houston, is a fraud. Figures. There are only Boise St. and TCU left to carry the torch. Note to non-BCS teams. You must actually field a defense to get to a BCS game. Boise St. and TCU are the only ones that seem to get that so far.

Top-25 Week4

Lots of movement this week. And we still have 3 teams from non-BCS conferences that refuse to lose. Could this be the year a mid-major or Big East team makes it to the National Championship game. I love college football!

So far being ranked 4-6 has been a recipe for disaster. Will it happen again?

LW=Last weeks ranking.

1. Florida - Tebow’s not hurt. He just using it as a motivational tool for the LSU game. LW-1
2. Texas - Their game against Texas Tech must have woken them up. This weeks game was never in doubt. LW-2
3. Alabama - We now know that Alabama has a better D than Georgia. Wait...we already knew that. LW-3
4. Virginia Tech - Ok now, have we all finally decided that VT is the ACC team to beat? LW-9
5. Boise St. - Face it people. They're not going to lose. Next real opponent: Whoever they play in a bowl game. LW-11
6. Cincinnati - Quietly stating their case that they belong in an NC game. A Big East and non-BCS team in an NC
game!?!  Whoa! That’s just crazy! LW-13
7. LSU - Remaining undefeated one ugly win at time. LW-7
8. Oklahoma - Play the Canes next week. Winner stays in the top-25. LW-10
9. USC - Bounced back by wiping it’s feet on a doormat. LW-12
10. Ohio St. - Beat a team that has been a colossal disappointment. LW-11
11. TCU - These Horned Frogs are gaining on Boise. LW-16
12. Houston - Just think how great they’d be if their defense came to their games too. LW-22
13. Kansas - This win wasn’t easy. But Southern Miss. is no slouch. LW-20
14. Iowa - All hail the Lion killers!!! LW-NR
15. Penn St. - ‘Playing Iowa sucked. Let’s go back to playing Cupcakes.’ LW-5
16. Oklahoma St. - Way to beat Grambling. Yippie kai yay! LW-15
17. Georgia - Who knew that Sun Devils could play in the rain? LW-17
18. Oregon - Working every week to prove the Boise St. loss was an aberration, deviation, abnormality, anomaly...
       (insert favorite synonym here) LW-25
19. Missouri - Not sure about Mizzou? The Nebraska, Okie St., Texas gauntlet should fix that one way or another.
       LW-19
20. California - The current state of the Cal program: ‘USC or bust!’ LW-4
21. Ole Miss - Sometimes you feel like a Nutt. Sometimes you play like one. LW-6
22. Michigan - So, is Indiana better than we thought, or are you worse than we thought? Hmm? LW-21
23. Miami, Fl - Put the Jekyll and Hyde potion down please. LW-14
24. South Florida - Lose QB beat Florida St. anyway. That too is an acceptable, but rarely used, method of gaining
       entry to the top-25. LW-NR
25. Nebraska - Bubble team. Ranked them here 2 weeks ago. Then pulled them. Probably pull them next week too.
       Or not. LW-NR

To be commended for their excellent bench warming capabilities: South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, Stanford,
Auburn, BYU, Arizona
