NFL Power Rankings - Week 13

With only 5 weeks left in the 2010 NFL season we are starting to get a clearer picture of who are the best teams in the league.  Week 13 will bring the picture even more clear, especially in the AFC as there are some matchups between top teams with the Jets traveling to New England and the Steelers heading to Baltimore.  We have a new number one team this week and one new addition to our top 5.  Here we go...

1.  Atlanta Falcons (9-2) - I hate the nickname "Matty Ice", mainly because he has yet to win an important game in January but I am starting to warm up to it after the Falcons defeat of the Packers last Sunday.  Matt Ryan is playing as efficiently as possible at the quarterback position and led the Falcons to another late victory.  The Falcons only two losses came against teams from Pennslyvania, so as long as they can stay away from one state in the union they should have a very good chance of making it to Texas in February.

2.  New England Patriots (9-2) - The Patriots played on Thanksgiving this past week in Detroit and for 40 minutes looked like they might have trouble with the Lions, but then they turned on the after burners and ended up beating the Lions by 21.  The Patriots defense is still a cause for concern and week to week you never know how they are going to perform.  They have their biggest game of the year on Monday night football this week as they welcome the Jets into Foxboro field for a match up of 2 of the 3 teams at 9-2.  This rivalry is good anytime they play, add in the division title to the mix and we are looking at the game of the year to date.  It all will come down to which Patriots defense shows up but a victory would go a long way to securing home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

3.  New York Jets (9-2) - The Jets also played on Thanksgiving when they faced the Bengals in the new Meadowlands Stadium.  This game was basically over before it started as the Jets won ever facet of the game.  Terrell Owens called superstar corner for the Jets, Darrelle Revis, average prior to the game...that sort of backfired as Revis held TO to 3 catches for 14 yards and made TO look like an average receiver.  The Jets will have their game of the year this week as they travel to New England for a showdown with the Patriots which will go a long way to decide the AFC east and home field advantage in the AFC playoffs.  If the Jets can limit their turnovers and shutdown Brady and company they have a chance to move up in our rankings.

4.  Baltimore Ravens (8-3) - The Ravens took care of business against the much improved Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home on Sunday.  The final score was 17-10 but the game was never as close as the final score.  The Ravens defense looked really good, holding the Bucs to less than 250 yards of offense.  Josh Freeman looked confused at times and definitely did not play his best game of the season.  Joe Flacco had a very efficient game and Ray Rice pounded the ball 20 times down the throat of the Bucs defense.  Balitmore will play host to the Steelers on Sunday night football in a game that will go a long way to deciding the AFC north.  The Ravens already beat the Steelers once so a win would give them a game lead with the tiebreaker.

5.  Chicago Bears (8-3) - Chicago has received no love all season in our rankings, mainly due to the lack of good wins so far this season.  They changed our thinking on Sunday as they laid a beat down against the Eagles.  The Chicago defense looked really good, limiting Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson from making any big plays.  They out-coached the Philadelphia Eagles and now stand alone on top of the NFC north.  They will travel to Detroit this week to face a Detroit team that doesn't quit.  Although on paper this looks like a game Chicago should win, they better take Detroit seriously because this would be a bad game for a let down.

Honorable Mentions:  New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles

NFL Power Rankings - Week 12

For the first time in a long time the majority of our power rankings remain the same after week 11.  Only one team falls out of our top 5 with one new addition.  Our top teams took care of business and this NFL season is setting up to be one of the most exciting come the end of the year.  It is still a little early but it is hard to imagine right now any team being able to rest players come week 17.  I can imagine a lot of playoff scenarios in place during that final week of the season.  On to our top 5, here we go...

1.  New England Patriots (8-2) - The Patriots held on Sunday to defeat the Colts after Peyton Manning through a very untimely interception deep in New England territory.  They remain our number one team for a second week, tying the record for most weeks at the number 1 position, that is how unpredictable this season has been.  I am still not sure they are the best team in the league or if there is even a best team in the league right now, but they have beaten the Steelers and Colts in consecutive weeks.  They have a short week this week as they will travel to Detroit to face the Lions on Turkey Day.  After their last two games this one should be slightly easier but that is what we thought when they faced the Browns and look what happened then.

2.  Atlanta Falcons (8-2) - The Falcons pulled away from the St. Louis Rams in the second half on Sunday and still have the best record in the NFC.  The Rams put up a valiant effort but it wasn't enough in the end and Matt Ryan continues to impress every week for the Falcons.  The Falcons will welcome the Packers into Atlanta on Sunday for what seems to be the game of the week in the NFL.  With only 3 games left on their schedule against teams with a winning record, this game could go a long way to helping them secure home field advantage in the playoffs.  A win against the Packers could vault Atlanta into the top spot on our power rankings.

3.  New York Jets (8-2) - Santonio Holmes might prove that he was the best pickup of the off season.  For the second time in as many weeks, Holmes scores the winning touchdown in the last possible second to give the Jets their third straight heart pounding victory.  The Jets continue to win games when you think their is little or no hope left.  They also have a short week this week as they will face the terrible Cincinnati Bengals on Thanksgiving night in Northern New Jersey.  Win or lose they will have 10 days to prepare for a showdown in week 13 on Monday night against the Patriots.  For the Jets sake, lets hope they don't overlook the Bengals on Thursday.

4.  Philadelphia Eagles (7-3) - The Eagles and Michael Vick continue their winning ways by taking care of business against the New York Giants on Sunday.  This game wasn't pretty with a ton of mistakes by both teams but in the end the Eagles found a way to win.  The Giants were able to contain Vick and perhaps give other teams a blue print to do the same thing.  This week the Eagles travel to Chicago to face the vaunted defense of the Bears.  This game features two teams that are leading their division at 7-3 and for Chicago, it would go a long way to proving they belong as an elite team in the NFC.

5.  Green Bay Packers (7-3) - The Packers ended the Vikings season on Sunday and in the process sent Brad Childress packing as he was fired yesterday.  They destroyed the Vikings in every facet of the game and they seem to be overcoming some of the huge injuries they sustained earlier in the season.  Greg Jennings is showing that he is one of the top 5 receivers in the NFL today while Aaron Rodgers continues to impress.  They have their toughest game in a long time on Sunday as they will travel to Atlanta to face the best team in the NFC.  If they win this game they have a shot at obtaining home field advantage in the playoffs and no team wants the road to the Superbowl to go through Lambeau Field.

Honorable Mentions:  Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

NFL Power Rankings - Week 11

Week 10 in the NFL might have been the best week so far.  There are huge shakeups in our rankings as 4 of the teams in last week's top 5 faced off against each other.  We have a new number one team and two new additions to our top 5.  Each week in the NFL brings new surprises and I highly doubt you will see the same order of teams after next week.  Why?  Because it is extremely hard to figure out who the best 5 teams are in the NFL at any given moment.  Here is my best effort...

1.  New England Patriots (7-2) - The Patriots receive our number one ranking after going into Pittsburgh and dismantling a very good Steelers team.  Tom Brady picked apart the defense and introduced Rob Gronkowski to America by throwing not one, not two, but three touchdown passes to the rookie tight end.  The Patriots defense rebounded after a horrendous game the previous week and held the Steelers in check for most of the night.  It doesn't get any easier this week for the Patriots as they will welcome the Colts into Foxboro on Sunday afternoon.  Which Patriots defense shows up will go a long way to figuring out the outcome of this game.

2.  Atlanta Falcons (7-2) - The Falcons proved they belong among the elite teams in the NFL by beating the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night.  Matt Ryan has quietly become one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.  It looked as though the Ravens were going to pull this game out but with less than 2 minutes left, Ryan guided the Falcons down the field for the winning touchdown.  Roddy White is playing like a man possessed.  The Falcons have had an extra couple days of rest which should help them when they travel to St. Louis on Sunday to face the upstart Rams.  This game could end up closer than you may think.

3.  New York Jets (7-2) - The Jets pulled out another overtime win on the road on Sunday against the Browns becoming the first team in NFL history to win two consecutive games in overtime on the road.  Here is the problem though, the two teams they had to beat in overtime have a combined record of 5-13.  The Jets will be the first to admit they aren't playing their best football but they still are tied for the best record in the NFL.  If they start playing up to their potential they might be the team to beat in the AFC.  This Sunday they welcome in the struggling Houston Texans which could be a dangerous match up if they don't take them seriously.

4.  Philadelphia Eagles (6-3) - The Eagles shot up our rankings this week after embarrassing the Redskins on Monday night.  Michael Vick might be the best quarterback in the NFL right now because I am not sure how any team can actually stop him.  The offensive weapons the Eagles currently have make them one of the most dangerous teams in the NFL and a team no one wants to play come January.  If Vick stays healthy, there is no telling where this team could go.  They have their biggest game of the season to date on Sunday night as their division rival, the New York Giants, travel down the Jersey Turnpike to Lincoln Financial Field.  The Eagles can prove to everyone that they are the best team in the NFC with a win.

5.  Indianapolis Colts (6-3) - The Colts move into the 5th spot in our rankings by default.  They were the only team in our honorable mentions, other than the Eagles, to win this week and with the losses by the Steelers, Ravens and Giants, they get the honor of being apart of the top 5.  Their win against the Bengals was less than impressive but nevertheless it was a win.  The Colts are really banged up on both sides of the ball and without Peyton Manning behind center they wouldn't be anywhere on our radar this year.  With that said, they have a huge game against their hated rivals, the Patriots, on Sunday in New England.  If they can find someway to win this game then they can prove that they belong in our top 5.

Honorable Mentions:  Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, New York Giants, New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers

NFL Power Rankings - Week 10

As each week in the NFL passes the season grows stranger and stranger.  This week we have a new number one team but a familiar one.  Our number one team last week lost to the Cleveland Browns convincingly and although you won't see the Browns in our top 5 or our honorable mentions, I am not sure if they are not the best team in the NFL today.  We have one new addition into our top 5 this week and it is from the NFC. Here we go...

1.  Baltimore Ravens (6-2) - The Ravens take over our number one spot this week after dismantling the best road team in the NFL, the Dolphins, at home this past Sunday.  Their defense played Ravens type football and their offense played well enough to win.  They have a short week this week as they will travel to Hotlanta to face the Falcons on Thursday night in the first of two matchups this week facing 2 of our top 5 teams.  This game will go a long way to showing us if the Ravens deserve to stay as our number one team.

2.  Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2) - The Steelers beat Cincinnati on Monday night and took revenge against the team they lost to twice last season, although they tried to give this game away at the end.  If it wasn't for the early season loss to the Ravens they would be our number one team.  They have a chance to reclaim the spot next week as they will welcome the Patriots into Heinz field on Sunday night in a huge conference battle and what some may think maybe an AFC conference final preview.  This will be the game of the week with the loser perhaps falling out of our top 5.

3.  New England Patriots (6-2) - The Patriots are coming off their worst loss of the season as they got man handled in Cleveland against the Browns.  Perhaps they were looking ahead to their matchup this week against the Steelers, either way they need to sure up their defense if they want to compete with Pittsburgh on Sunday night.  Tom Brady has proven time and time again that the Patriots can win with less than "star quality" names on offense but the Patriots have never won without a stingy defense.  If they can find a way to play better on the defensive side of the ball they have a chance to stamp their name permanently in our top 5.

4.  New York Giants (6-2) - The New York Giants continue to impress on the defensive side of the ball as they held the Seattle Seahawks to 7 points on Sunday.  This game was over before half as the Giants ran out to a 28-0 lead in the second quarter.  This week they invite the spiraling Dallas Cowboys into northern New Jersey in a divisional showdown that should be more one-sided than Cowboys fans would like to see.  As long as they aren't looking ahead to their week 11 showdown with the Eagles, the Giants should walk away with another easy victory.

5.  Atlanta Falcons (6-2) - The Falcons proved on Sunday that they belong in the top 5 of our power rankings by beating a surprisingly good Tampa Bay Buccaneers team at home.  This team is by far the quietest 6-2 team in the NFL and should be a team to watch out for come January.  They can prove that they belong as the will have a chance to take down our number one team on Thursday night when they face the Ravens at home.  If they can stick to their game plan of running the ball with Michael Turner down opposing teams throats they must just pull off the upset.

Honorable Mentions:  New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, Philadelphia Eagles

NFL Power Rankings - Week 9

There was some major shakeups in our power rankings after week 8.  I thought that the AFC was far and away the better conference in the NFL and then two NFC teams beat 2 of our top 5 teams on Sunday.  There is only one team left in the NFL with one loss and they occupy our top spot for the first time this season...here we go...

1.  New England Patriots (6-1) - The Patriots won an impressive game over the Vikings on Sunday in a game where the Vikings had to win.  The Patriots defense seems to be playing much better over the last couple of weeks, if they keep improving this team is going to be tough to beat come January.  This week the Patriots travel to the dog pound to face the improving Cleveland Browns who are coming off their biggest victory in the past 5 years.  For the Patriots sake, I hope they aren't looking forward to the week 10 match up with the Steelers and forget to show up against the Browns.

2.  Baltimore Ravens (5-2) - The Ravens were on a bye last week and had some time to get some players healthy and rested.  They move up the rankings this week by default since the teams above them lost.  This week they will face the Dolphins at home and so far this season the Dolphins are the best team in the NFL on the road.  This should be a very good matchup and if the Ravens can pull out a win they can prove that they belong in the number 2 spot in our rankings.

3.  Indianapolis Colts (5-2) - Even with the injuries to some key players the Colts continue to find a way to win.  Peyton Manning continues to show everyone why he is the most valuable player in the NFL.  They got revenge on the Texans for the week 1 loss and now are in first place in the very competitive AFC south.  This week they will travel to Philadelphia to face the Eagles who are coming off of a bye and will have Michael Vick back behind center.  The Eagles are undefeated coming off of a bye under Andy Reid but have never played the Colts well.  Should be an interesting matchup and one the Colts should be able to win.

4.  Pittsburgh Steelers (5-2) - The Steelers are the only team in our power rankings who lost on Sunday.  They ran into a buzz saw in the New Orleans Saints who were desperate for a win after being embarrassed at home against the Browns the week before.  This week they will travel to Cincinnati for a divisional matchup against the Bengals who swept the Steelers in '09.  This Steelers team is better than last year and this Bengals team is no where near as good as they were in 2009.  The Steelers will continue their winning ways this week, that is a guarantee.

5.  New York Giants (5-2) - The Giants have finally cracked their way into our top 5 and did so being idle during week 8.  Their defense has been playing out of their minds the past few weeks and if Eli Manning can stop throwing interceptions this team looks to be the one to beat in the NFC.  The Giants have to travel across the country to face the Seahawks on Sunday in a game in which they should win but it depends on which Seahawks team shows up this week.  If the Giants can figure out a way to beat the Seahawks they may have a chance to move up our power rankings.

Honorable Mentions:  New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta Falcons, Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

NFL Power Rankings - Week 8

For the first time all season there are no changes in our power rankings after this past week's games.  The only differences come in our honorable mentions with a couple of additions and subtractions but they couldn't find a way to crack into our top 5.  Here we go...

1.  Pittsburgh Steelers (5-1) - The Steelers went on the road to Miami on Sunday and squeaked out a victory against the Dolphins.  Some how the Steelers ended up on the correct end of a weird call by the referees, it seems this is a regular occurence for the Steelers.  Big Ben fumbled at the goal line and because the play was blown dead for what was determined at the time as a touchdown, there was no clear evidence of a recovery.  The Steelers got the ball back and kicked the winning field goal.  Tough loss for the Dolphins.  The Steelers will travel to New Orleans on Sunday night to face the struggling Saints.  The Steelers need to gear up to play the '09 Saints, not the current Saints if they want to win.

2.  New York Jets (5-1) - The Jets were the hottest team in the NFL going into their bye week, winners of 5 straight.  They should be well rested and healthy for their matchup this week against the struggling and hurting Green Bay Packers at the new Meadowlands stadium on Sunday.  Can they continue to play well and extend their winning streak to 6 games?  It should be an interesting match up for them on Sunday and I would expect the Jets to come out with a win.

3.  New England Patriots (5-1) - The Patriots traveled to San Diego this past Sunday to face the under performing Chargers.  They jumped out to an early and comfortable lead before having to hang on as the Chargers made a late comeback.  The Patriots avoided an overtime game when the game tying field goal doinked off the right upright.  I am still not 100% on board with the Patriots this year, their defense has been suspect at times and I am not sure if they can hold up for the entire season.  This week they face the Vikings in Foxboro.  Will Brett Favre play?  Does it matter?  I like the Patriots to win easily at home.

4.  Baltimore Ravens (5-2) - The Ravens played one of the toughest games of the week against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, yes, you read that correct, the Buffalo Bills.  The Bills took the Ravens to overtime but a great defensive play by who else, Ray Lewis, got the Ravens the ball deep in Bills territory for the game winning field goal.  The Ravens get a bye this week which will be needed after their difficult opening 7 games.

5.  Indianapolis Colts (4-2) - The Colts have been battling injuries all season so the bye week came at just the right time for them.  They have a huge divisional game this week against the Texans in a rematch of week 1 where they lost in Houston.  This time it will be in Indianapolis, on Monday night, off of a bye week, against a Texans defense who has forgotten how to stop opposing teams.  I would put my money on Peyton Manning.

Honorable Mentions:  Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans, New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons, Kansas City Chiefs

NFL Week 7 Recap and Thoughts

NFL Week 7 Recap and Thoughts

Another week gone in the NFL and another week of mystifying games.  This is the same line I used to start this blog last week and it fits in perfectly again!  If there is one thing consistent in the NFL this season it is inconsistency.  This is by far the strangest season I have seen in my 32 years on this earth.  Here we go...

1.  After not showing up last week in Philly, the Falcons righted the ship and won at home against the Bengals.  With Carson Palmer throwing for over 400 yards for the Bengals and Roddy White having over 200 yards receiving for the Falcons, was there any defense played in this game?  The Bengals are in deep trouble after falling to 2-4.

2.  The Eagles defense held Chris Johnson to 66 yards rushing.  If I heard that before the game I would have said the Eagles would win...but wait, Kenny Britt goes for 225 yards receiving?  Are you kidding me?  After the first 150, maybe you should defend him.  The Eagles gave up 27 points in the fourth quarter and looked awful doing it, the Titans outplayed them in every facet of the game.

3.  Poor Buffalo.  They played their best game of the year only to come up short in overtime.  Ryan Fitzpatrick throws for 374 yards, that is more yards then the first 5 games combined.  Baltimore, aren't you supposed to have a good defense?  That is two weeks in a row where you were basically embarrassed on the defensive side of the ball.

4.  Congratulations to the Carolina Panthers!  They will not be the last team without a win in the NFL. The San Francisco 49ers are just not good and David Carr is worse.  Is it time to let Mike Singletary go?  This team is so out of whack, predicted to win their division and now might be on of the worst teams in the awful NFC.

5.  DeAngelo Hall from the Redskins had 4 catches for 92 yards and a touchdown on Sunday, pretty good fantasy stats for a wide receiver.  Here is the problem, Jay Cutler from Chicago is the one who completed the passes to Hall who isn't a receiver but a cornerback.  Wow, the Bears have gone from good to bad very quickly.  This game was a turnover fest and it is only be default that the Redskins won.

6.  Kansas City, you are good!  I have finally admitted it.  The only other two teams in the AFC to allow less points then the Chiefs are the Jets and the Steelers.  That is good company to be in.  They put up 42 points against the Jaguars so obviously their offense isn't hurting either.

7.  The Steelers win another game in a controversial call at the end of the game.  It seems they win at least two games a year where the call goes their way.  Roethisberger obviously fumbled at the goal line and because it was called a touchdown and play had stopped they had no other option then to give the Steelers back the ball at the 1.  A very tough loss for the Dolphins and another gift for the Steelers, Christmas in October.

8.  What has happened to the Saints?  They got beat down by the Cleveland Browns, yes you read that correctly, the Cleveland Browns, and you know what is worse?  It was in New Orleans!  Drew Brees through two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns, that is not acceptable.  They don't have the swagger they had last year and it shows.

9.  The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are tied for first in the NFC South after week 7.  That seems hard to believe but they pulled out a last second score to beat the Rams at home and share first place with the Falcons.  Given their performance last week against the Saints, I can't really jump on board with this team just yet.

10.  Arizona Cardinals, your management and coaching staff should all be fired for allowing your team to start its season with this quarterback situation.  If you want to hand the ball over to your rookie quarterback, Max Hall, then you need to allow him to play.  You can't play musical chairs with your quarterback, not when its a rookie and a veteran who has proven useless.  It is clear now that the Seahawks are the best team in the NFC West.

11.  59, that is the number of points the Raiders scored in Denver yesterday.  That is 10 less than the points they put up in their four losses.  The rushed for over 300 yards.  The Broncos are in major trouble, this is the worst home defeat against a division rival in their history.  That defense is better than this and needs to figure out who they are in the next few days.

12.  The Chargers put up a fight in the fourth quarter to try and salvage their season but came up short.  That was a big win for the Patriots, traveling across the country to face a desparate opponent after a big win the week before.  They almost allowed the Chargers to fight back but in the end the Chargers last gasp, the field goal attempt as time expired, doinked off the right upright.

13.  Brett Farve, it is time to retire.  You didn't look good last night, you actually cost the Vikings the game.  You are old, injured and you just don't seem that interested.  Now you are causing a distraction off the field.  If the Vikings had won last night then I would say you should continue to play, now I say just walk away, with whatever little amount of dignity you have left and it isn't much

NFL Power Rankings - Week 7

Another NFL week in the books and another new team at the top spot of our NFL power rankings.  For the first time ever I have only AFC teams in the top 5.  I am also adding something new this week, honorable mention for the teams just outside of the top 5.  Feel free to comment with your opinion.  Here we go...

1.  Pittsburgh Steelers (4-1) - The Steelers saw their quarterback return from suspension this week and Big Ben showed why he was missed throwing for 3 touchdowns and blowing out the Browns 28-10.  Roethisberger did show some early rust but playing against the Browns definitely helped him find his groove.  This week they travel to Miami to play the upstart Dolphins which could prove to be more difficult then it would appear on paper.  I still like the Steelers defense and with Roethisberger back, Pittsburgh could hold our top spot for a long time.

2.  New York Jets (5-1) - Some people will argue the Jets got the game against the Broncos handed to them by the refs but in my eyes it was clear pass interference against Santonio Holmes late in the fourth quarter.  In the end it doesn't matter because the Jets are now 5-1 and have won 5 games in a row going into their bye week.  If the Jets continue to play well and get good breaks they could end up in our number one spot if the Steelers falter.

3.  New England Patriots (4-1) - The Patriots were 10 points behind early in the fourth quarter this week against the Ravens at home and found a way to win.  That is what the Patriots do and have done for the past decade.  Welcome back to New England Deion Branch, not sure why you ever left.  New England will travel across the country this week to face the faltering Chargers.  For the Patriots sake, I hope they don't take this team to lightly or they may fall out of the top 5 quickly.

4.  Baltimore Ravens (4-2) - The Ravens had a tough loss on Sunday, their vaunted defense allowed the Patriots to come back from a 10 point deficit in the fourth quarter and you can be assured that doesn't sit well with Ray Lewis.  Their offense looked good at times and then at times looked completely inefficient.  The good thing for the Ravens is that after a brutal 6 weeks to start the season they get the Bills at home this week.  I will go out on a limb and guarantee a victory for the Ravens on Sunday.

5.  Indianapolis Colts (4-2) - For the first time this year the Colts have found their way into our top 5.  They won a hard fought game on the road in Washington against the Redskins on Sunday night.  I have many doubts this team is as good as it has been in the past, especially on the defensive side of the ball.  If the Colts can breathe some life into their defense they might have a shot of shooting up our rankings and luckily for them they have two weeks to figure out how to do that as they are on a bye this week.

Honorable Mentions:  Houston Texans, Tennessee Titans, New Orleans Saints, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles.
