The People's Poll Attack - Week 9

(The Week 9 People's Poll can be found here)

The People's Poll is meant to provide a voice to the average college basketball fan, free from media and homer bias. Sometimes, the people need to be reminded of this. The result: The People's Poll Attack!

My Compromise:

For anyone who read my poll this week, I mentioned that I would use the Poll Attack this week to explain my thought process behind slotting North Carolina in at 10 this week.

At the risk of being labeled a complete homer, and starting a needless debate in the comments below, I offer this compromise to everyone who has North Carolina currently ranked out of the Top 15:  I will ignore the topic of UNC’s ranking completely this week, but if they beat Clemson and Georgia Tech this week (as I expect them to do) I get to hammer anyone who doesn’t properly rank them next week. And of course if they lose I’ll shut up…

Seems fair right? Alright, on to business…

Poll of the Week:

The “Poll of the Week” goes to… nekco (anti-climatic huh!)

Sorry to go all Gary Parrish on everyone here, but despite my best efforts to prove how Missouri State didn’t deserve to be ranked last week, nekco is apparently a stubborn one. To be fair, the Bears did play two games this week, however, one of those games was a home loss to Wichita State… ouch. I will give nekco some credit though, he must have seen the Wichita State game as he did manage to drop Missouri State to #11 in his poll.

Oh yeah, and he also had New Mexico, loser to both UNLV (@ home) and San Diego State during the week, at 16. To put this in perspective, of the two Lobo fans in the poll, only one of them could justify including their home team in their poll – and that was at 25 (much more realistic).

Special mentions go out to:

·         LIFETIMELOBO for ranking UAB at 13, while the Coaches and AP both have them outside of the top 30; and

·         wachoosay and LIFETIMELOBO for ranking St. Mary’s in the top 16, while the Coaches has them at 29 and the AP didn’t give them a single vote

Blatant Omissions:

Those guilty of blatant omissions have left a consensus top 15 team out of their poll, with the consensus being the AP, Coaches, GP and People's polls. While everyone's entitled to their opinion, these people are pushing it:

            User                                 Team Missing

jhzak                                 Duke (hmmm… two ACC teams in a row…)

            schildkrotte                     Tennessee

            lifetimelobo                     Tennesee

            THE MAN                          West Virginia

Special shout-out to KVSkubball. Congrats on wising up to getting Michigan State in your poll, and thanks for pointing out to me that your “system rewarded them when they finally beat someone really good”. Two questions for you though: 1) How can they jump 26 spots in one week after beating Wisconsin by 7 at home and an awful Iowa team, and 2) Did you notice that Wisconsin is ahead of Michigan State in your poll? Say what you want about your system working itself out, though I agree it is starting to, but until it starts passing the logic test, perhaps consider making some manual changes before calling my “grousing” “misspent”.

(As always, I’m completely open to any comments/suggestions/criticisms everyone has.)

Until next time!

The People's Poll Attack - Week 8

(The Week 8 People's Poll can be found here)

The People's Poll is meant to provide a voice to the average college basketball fan, free from media and homer bias. Sometimes, the people need to be reminded of this. The result: The People's Poll Attack!

Poll of the Week:

The inaugural “Poll of the Week” goes to… nekco.

Missouri State. Nice looking record of 12-2, and RPI of 30. But when you start looking at their body of work, it's not really clear how good this team is (plus the RPI is still rather meaningless at this point). The SOS is only 128, and during the past two weeks they’ve lost at Arkansas, a 7-7 “powerhouse” with home losses against East Tennessee State and South Alabama, and Northern Iowa. Additionally, they are not ranked on any of the other major polls, nor did they receive a single vote in either the AP or Coaches polls.

Despite all of this, nekco felt they deserved a #9 ranking, ahead of teams such as North Carolina, Michigan State, Kansas State, New Mexico, and Georgetown (i.e. all consensus top 15 selections this week). What makes even less sense is that Northern Iowa, a team with a better record, better RPI, and who beat them Sunday night (!!), did not even make it on to nekco’s poll.

Special mention is also required to jasonwells1982 for ranking Miami 14th. Yes the 14-1 record looks great, but the SOS of 333 is awful. And what happened in their only road game against a team with an RPI in the top 300? Yep, they lost to Boston College.

Blatant Omissions:

Those guilty of blatant omissions have left a consensus top 15 team out of their Top 25, with the consensus being the AP, Coaches, GP and People's polls. While everyone's entitled to their opinion, these people are pushing it:

            KVSkubball                      Michigan State

            vol u me                            New Mexico

            THE MAN                          New Mexico

            ski-u-muh1                      New Mexico

            Chicago107                      New Mexico

(As this is only the first week, I’m completely open to any comments/suggestions/criticisms everyone has. The blog may be a work in progress for the first few weeks)

Until next time!
