Cards looking for a starter

The Cardinals are on the hunt for another starter, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss writes . According to Strauss, manager Tony La Russa and pitching coach Dave Duncan are interested in bringing in recently-released Jeff Suppan.

Suppan would be available for a pro-rated share of the major-league minimum after being released by the Brewers. Suppan pitched for the Cardinals from 2004-06 and signed a big contract with the Brewers after helping the Cardinals win the 2006 World Series.

Others in consideration by the Cardinals are Baltimore's Kevin Millwood and Kansas City's Brian Bannister. Millwood would cost $7.5 million of his $12 million salary, while Bannister would cost prospects. Bannister, arbitration-eligible following this season, has one his last five starts.

Strauss writes the Cardinals are more interested in a pitcher who has played this season rather than a pitcher who hasn't, such as Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz, Braden Looper or Paul Byrd.

Brad Penny's back will be re-examined in St. Louis on Monday and told Strauss his timetable is still undetermined.

"I've got to tell them when the discomfort is gone," Penny told Strauss. "There's still something there, but it's localized. It's nothing like it was. I just know I don't want to come back too soon and set things back another six weeks. I don't think anyone wants that."

Kyle Lohse had surgery on his forearm last month and the timetable for his return is still unknown.
