Astros, Phillies make minor trade

The Astros and Phillies swapped minor leaguers, though the player Houston got in return, left-hander Sergio Escalona, has been added to its 40-man roster.

Escalona appeared in 14 games for the Phillies in 2009, going 1-0 with a 4.61 ERA. Last season he spent the entire year at Double-A Reading, going 4-8 with a 3.81 ERA and 10 saves. He had 53 strikeouts in 54 innings. He had recently been designated for assignment by the Phillies.

"Sergio adds depth to the competition for left-handers in our bullpen," Houston general manager Ed Wade said, according to one of the team's officials . "Our scouts have liked his stuff and believe he's got a chance to be very effective in left-on-left situations."

The Astros send second baseman Albert Cartwright to Philadelphia. Between Class A Lancaster and Double-A Corpus Christi, Cartwright hit .294/.355/.472 with 10 home runs and 55 RBI in 127 games.
