So, in today's story that wouldn't be a big deal if it were anyone but the most hated player in baseball, the New York Post reports Alex Rodriguez had a special diet this offseason and was dedicated to keeping it.
If it were any other player, it'd be an anecdote in a "best shape of their life" story. Instead, the Post ran it on its infamous Page Six. Rodriguez's crime? Bringing his own food to restaurants.
According to one of the Post's sources, he's on a special high-protein diet and takes his own cooler full of food to restaurants when he goes out with his girlfriend, Torrie Wilson. He did apparently ask a waitress to heat it up in the kitchen -- I'm not going to pass judgement on that without knowledge of the size of the tip he left.
Yeah, I see where if you automatically dislike the guy, there's a point-and-snicker kind of aspect to this story, but otherwise, is it really a big deal? It's a lot like last offseason's laugh-at-A-Rod story of his then-girlfriend, movie star Cameron Diaz, feeding him popcorn at the Super Bowl -- how many people would dream of being fed popcorn by Diaz at the Super Bowl? Yet, many of those people were the ones laughing.
There's plenty of reasons to dislike Rodriguez as a player, but I'm not sure this is one of them.

You remember the Super Bowl?
I think it says a lot about us as a society that people actually made fun of A-Rod for being fed popcorn by Diaz when most of us would give an appendage to have her feed us popcorn. Hell, I'd be really, really happy to have Diaz feed me popcorn and I hate popcorn. But it was A-Rod. If it were Derek Jeter, we'd be talking about how smoothly he did it and how well he led Minka Kelly to get just the right amount of butter and salt, but since it's A-Rod, he's mocked.
Anyway, last night Diaz was on the Late Show with David Letterman (right here on CBS, if you missed it. You know, you should never turn your TV from that channel. Tonight on The Good Wife, the firm sues a website that failed to protect the anonymity of a Chinese dissident. I think the website may have been Eye on Basketball; those guys thought the Grizzlies were going to draft him) and explained the popcorn incident. So, what was the deal with the popcorn?
"We were watching the game and I was eating and I was getting down to the last couple of pieces of popcorn and all of a sudden I see a hand coming in… and I'm like… [at this point she pantomimes pulling away a tub of popcorn]. Anybody who knows me does not put their hand in my food, especially when it's close to my mouth. And I said, 'What are you? It's mine.' And then I went, 'You know what? I love you too much, I'm going to give it to you, you deserve it." And it was the only piece of popcorn that I even put near his face and they happened to have the camera on right when I did it."
Diaz went on to say the couple had a lot of fun with the incident.
Here's the whole clip where Diaz talks about her "boyfriend."For more baseball news, rumors and analysis, follow @cbssportsmlb on Twitter or subscribe to the RSS feed.

How is Alex Rodriguez supposed to eat popcorn now?
The Yankees third baseman reportedly dumped the movie star, several sites have reported.
"[Diaz is] hurt and betrayed, because she tried so hard to please him," a source told fitperez.com. "She went overboard."
DIaz and Rodriguez started dating last year and she was often seen at Yankee Stadium and at Legends Field in Tampa in spring training. The two were also famously seen at the Super Bowl, with Diaz feeding him popcorn.
During last year's American League Championship Series, a man obsessed with Diaz ran onto the field at Yankee Stadium, apparently attempting to get to Rodriguez.
Rodriguez has dated Kate Hudson and Madonna since divorcing his wife, Cynthia Rodriguez. For more baseball news, rumors and analysis, follow @cbssportsmlb on Twitter or subscribe to the RSS feed.
