Mets ace Santana out with muscle strain

Mets left-handed star Johan Santana left his start Thursday after five innings and 65 pitches with a strained pectoral muscle. He left with a 2-1 lead over the Braves and was replaced by Elmer Dessens.

Santana has been a workhorse, and an effective one (3.02 ERA), but has been a victim of lousy offensive support and is just 10-9 -- with just one win when allowing more than one run. He entered the game having lost three straight starts for just the fourth time in his career.

The Mets list Santana as day-to-day, but keep an eye on this one -- pectoral injuries sometimes turn out to be shoulder issues.
