"Dodgers released LF Garret Anderson."
It's a simple sentence in a list of 50 transactions that took place on major-league rosters on Tuesday, and could well represent a quiet end to the career of one of the more underappreciated players of his era.
Anderson, 38, went out with a whimper, to be sure. He batted just .181/.204/.274 for the Dodgers this season while mostly being used as a left-handed pinch-hitter (and making $550,000). Los Angeles designated him for assignment last weekend and he went unclaimed. He now becomes a free agent, and it's going to be an uphill battle to get another job, at least for this season.
But Anderson will long be remembered as a key part of some strong Angels teams over 15 years in Anaheim. He made three trips to the playoffs, the highlight of his career coming when he delivered the World Series-winning hit to beat the Giants in 2002.
Anderson was a three-time All-Star and is a .293 career hitter. He'll probably make it to spring training with someone next year, but when it's time for him to hang it up, it would be nice to see the Angels sign him so he can retire with the team he helped anchor for so long.
