Mets add DePodesta

In a move people have been speculating on since Sandy Alderson took over as Mets general manager, former Dodgers GM Paul DePodesta has been hired as vice president of player development and amateur scouting. He has been a vice president with the Padres for the past two years after being hired by Alderson.

DePodesta is a pioneer in the sabermetrics movement, a former assistant to Billy Beane in Oakland. This hire, along with last week's hiring of former Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi as a special assistant to Alderson, could signal a major shift in the Mets' organizational philosophy. It definitely signals that they're spending a lot of money on executives.

Mets hire J.P. Ricciardi

Ricciardi The Mets beat out the Red Sox for the services of J.P. Ricciardi, the ex-Blue Jays GM that will help build up a new way of doing things in New York.

Ricciardi, fired in 2009 and serving as an ESPN analyst since, joins Sandy Alderson in New York with a big task in front of him. The Mets have a thin farm system, a bloated major-league team with no discernible direction and a mess behind the scenes.

With the title special assistant to the GM, the Mets announced Ricciardi will also assist Alderson in all aspects of the baseball operations department.

"J.P. brings a wealth of knowledge and a breadth of experience to the organization," said Alderson. "I worked with him for over a decade in Oakland and I know first hand he's a superb talent evaluator. He'll be a tremendous resource in a variety of areas."

Ricciardi does have ties to the Mets, playing for the team from 1980-81 after signing as an undrafted free agent. He was teammates with current Athletics GM Billy Beane while with Class A in 1980.

"I couldn't be more excited about being reunited with Sandy," said Ricciardi. "We enjoyed tremendous success together in Oakland and it's my goal to help duplicate that here with the Mets. As a former Met farm hand, it's a double homecoming for me."
