Minor league game goes 23 innings

By C. Trent Rosecrans

It's not every day a player enters the game as a pinch hitter and then gets six more at-bats. Clearwater's Leandro Castro entered Monday's Florida State League game against Jupiter in the 10th inning as a pinch hitter and finished the game 1 for 7.

Jupiter outfielder Jose Duarte didn't enter the game until the 14th inning, but then ended the game with an RBI single in the 23rd inning, giving the Marlins high Class A team a 2-1 victory over the Phillies' affiliate. Check out the boxscore here.

Phillies prospect Jiwan James tweeted after the game:

Six hours previously, he tweeted he was getting his pre-game peanut butter and jelly. Hopefully by he got a snack sometime during the game, because PB&J is tasty, but it's not exactly enough to fuel you for 23 innings. James went 3 for 8 with a double, triple and two walks, scoring the team's only run in the third inning, which was followed by 20 scoreless innings.

The two teams combined for 31 hits, but just two runs in a game that lasted 5:37 and had an official attendance of 330. Both teams used eight pitchers.
