Class A team to celebrate Titanic anniversary

By C. Trent Rosecrans

There's nothing like minor-league promotions, and the Potomac Nationals will have an interesting one on April 15 -- the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

To commemorate the anniversary, the team will allow women and children into the ballpark first -- a full 15 minutes before the men.

I was thinking maybe they should have specials on icees or a dunk tank -- too soon?

No matter what else they do, I'm sure plenty of people will make "I'm the king of the world" jokes and think they're the first one to do so. They'll be wrong.

Don Zimmer meets the Zim Bear

By C. Trent Rosecrans

Perhaps the most anticipated day of the 2012 season is June 29, when the Tampa Bay Rays will be giving the first 10,000 fans at the game with the Tigers the Zim Bear. A teddy bear with the face of Don Zimmer. Yep.

Anwyay, how does the bear compare with the real thing? Luckily Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune has a camera and can put our imaginations at ease. Here it is:

Don Zimmer

So what does Zimmer think of the bear?

"I don't know what to think," Zimmer told Mooney. Zimmer did note that Tigers manager Jim Leyland has called him several times to give him a heard time about the bear.

Aug. 5 is also going to be pretty awesome, with the DJ Kitty bobblehead.

I haven't done my usual preseason look at all the best giveaways for the season ahead, but it looks like the Rays may be the leader in the clubhouse, or at least until the Brewers do the Ryan Braun specimen bottle giveaway.

This week in free stuff: Aug. 23-29

A look at this week in promotional giveaways from around baseball:

Monday, Aug. 23
Florida Marlins -- cam floppy hat. It's a floppy hat, but nobody can see you.
Hudson Valley Renegades (New York-Penn League) -- mystery bobblehead. The team website doesn't say what the bobblehead will be, just that if you're one of the first 1,500 into the park, you'll get one.

Tuesday, Aug. 24
Carlos Ruiz Philadelphia Phillies -- Carlos Ruiz Bobble figurine. I guess it's a "figurine" because it's smaller. But it still looks pretty cool.
Los Angeles Angels -- fleece blanket. My dog loves his SGA (eBay lingo for stadium giveaway) fleece blankets.
Las Vegas 51s (Pacific Coast League) Holly Madison bobblehead. Yeah, it's the head that bobbles. I think they missed a good opportunity there.
Binghamton Mets (Eastern League) -- plunger. Really, just what it says. Hey, you probably need a plunger more than a bobblehead.

Wednesday, Aug. 25
Buffalo Bisons (International League) -- Fernando Martinez bobblehead. Martinez his hitting .253/.317/.455 with 12 homers, 33 RBI and 4,000 bobbleheads.
Trenton Thunder (Eastern League) -- back-to-school notebooks. Who couldn't use a notebook for school? Or do kids still use those?
Binghamton Mets (Eastern League) -- sling bag giveaway. The classic, jersey look. Again, a good, practical giveaway.

Thursday, Aug. 26
Springfield Cardinals (Texas League) -- winter cap
Hudson Valley Renegades (New York-Penn League) -- dog leash. The first 500 dogs get a gift, not their people. My dog would prefer to be let off the leash instead of a new one.

Friday, Aug. 27
Ichiro bobblehead Seattle Mariners -- Ichiro bobblehead. I don't currently have an Ichiro in my bobblehead collection -- maybe if I just knew someone in Seattle.
Syracuse Chiefs (International League) -- Stephen Strasburg action figure
New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Eastern League) -- frisbee
West Michigan Whitecaps (Midwest League) -- Frank Howard bobblehead. The former Tiger will be at the park for his bobblehead night.
Brooklyn Cyclones (New York-Penn League) -- Ron Darling bobblehead
Vermont Lake Monster (New York-Penn League) -- Mystery bobblehead. I'll be interested to know if it's new, or just old stuff they had in the storage room.
Yakima Bears (Northwest League) -- Mel Stottlemyre bobblehead
Greeneville Astros (Appalachian League) -- blanket

Saturday, Aug. 28
Los Angeles Angels -- candy jar. The Angels have had some of my favorite promotions this year, and this is another winner.
Texas Rangers -- t-shirt. Classic baseball style with red sleeves and a white base. It's for kids only, so it'll make some emo college kid happy.
Washington Nationals -- Ivan Rodriguez bobblehead
Colorado Rockies -- coffee tumbler. I still use my Dan Haren A's tumbler.
San Diego Padres -- Everth Cabrera bobblehead
San Francisco Giants -- Joe DiMaggio SF Seals bobblehead
Bowling Green Hot Rods (Midwest League) Cave Shrimp bobble-tail. So, the Hot Rods ran a contest to name the team. Hot Rods, obviously, won. Cave Shrimp was another entry and this is the "What Could Have Been" promotion. I may have to eBay this badboy..
Tulsa Drillers (Texas League) -- ONEOK Field replica
Visalia Rawhide (California League) -- reusable grocery bags
Quad Cities River Bandits (A) Matt Holliday bobblehead
Everett AquaSox (Norhtwest League) -- Ryan Rowland-Smith bobblehead
Idaho Falls Chukars (Rookie Appalachian League) -- Billy Butler bobblehead.

Sunday, Aug. 29
CC Sabathia Milwaukee Brewers -- CC Sabathia bobblehead day. I'm not exactly sure why the Brewers are honoring a guy who pitched 17 games for them, but oh well. It's a cool looking bobblehead.
Toronto Blue Jays -- Dave Stieb bobblehead
Chicago White Sox -- Frank Thomas Bobblehead
Texas Rangers -- kids chest protector backpack
San Diego Padres -- metal lunch box
Inland Empire 66ers (California League) -- Dodgers fleece blanket
Stockton Ports (California) -- Ports mini basketball and hoop set
Beloit Snappers (Midwest League) -- Ben Revere bobblehead

-- C. Trent Rosecrans

This week in free stuff: Aug. 16-22

Monday, Aug. 16
Springfield Cardinals (Texas League) -- Stan Musial bobblehead. Bar none, the best giveaway this week. If you didn't read Joe Posnanski's article on Musial in Sports Illustrated a couple of weeks ago, stop what you're doing and read it now.

Tuesday, Aug. 17
Los Angeles Dodgers -- Matt Kemp bobblhead
New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Eastern League) -- Kevin Youkilis bobblehead.
Reading Phillies (Eastern League) -- Mike Schmidt batting practice t-shirt

Wednesday, Aug. 18
Reading Phillies (Eastern League) -- Ryan Howard model wooden bat
Lakewood BlueClaws (South Atlantic League) -- notebook. Did you know some kids are back in school? Crazy, doesn't it seem early for that? Maybe because I went to a college that was on quarters, so I haven't been in school in August in 17 years.
Mahoning Valley Scrappers (New York-Penn League) -- Polk High T-shirt. It's Ed O'Neill night, and for now he'll be remembered as Al Bundy, but another year of Modern Family as good as the first and people will forget that.
State College Spikes (New York-Penn League) -- soup bowl. OK.

Thursday, Aug. 19
Pittsburgh Pirates -- t-shirt thursday. It's a good simple, baseball with logo. I like it.
Lakewood BlueClaws (South Atlantic League) -- Miles Austin bobblehead. Honoring Monmouth University's most famous football star -- it's odd for a Cowboy to be honored in Eagles country. Or maybe they'll cheer when they break the bobblehead's neck. For safety's sake, he'll be in a Monmouth uniform.

Friday, Aug. 20
Delmarva Shorebirds (South Atlantic League) -- Fernando Guerrero bobble boxing gloves. The NABO middleweight title holder not only has his own bobble (the head doesn't bobble, his gloves do), he'll also be there to sign autographs.
Sacramento River Cats (Pacific Coast League) -- California governor bobblehead. You can choose -- and make your vote known -- Meg Whitman or Jerry Brown.
San Antonio Missions (Texas League) -- koozie
St. Lucie Mets (Florida State League) -- banana phone.  A phone. Shaped like a banana. Kids, back in the old days we only had to have a cord for a phone and it was wired to our house. And if we were out of the house, nobody could answer it.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans (South Atlantic League) -- Meterorologist bobblehead winner -- two WBTW Frank Johnson and WMBF's Rob Hatchell held an online vote and the winner got a bobblehead in their likeness and fans get a bobblehead of a weatherman.
Potomac Nationals (Carolina League) -- Drew Storen bobblehead.
West Michigan Whitecaps (Midwest League) -- Tiger Stadium replica. You know, that old place. That old, awesome place.
Vancouver Canadians (Northwest League) -- trucker cap
Missoula Osprey (Frontier League) -- 1910 Firefighter bobblehead

Saturday, Aug. 21
Pittsburgh Pirates -- Crawfords cap. I love when teams honor the Negro League teams from their city.
Kansas City Royals -- jersey cooler. You know, a cooler that looks like a Royals jersey.
Minnesota Twins -- lunch box. Always a favorite.
Arizona Diamondbacks -- spring training replica stadium. The new one, not the old one.
Las Vegas 51s (Pacific Coast League) -- Frank Caliendo bobblehead. The latest in the team's series of unfunny comedians.
Northwest Arkansas Naturals (Texas League) -- Snuggie-type blanket
Corpus Christi Hooks (Texas League) -- aluminum bottle
Asheville Tourists (South Atlantic League) -- Roy Williams bobblehead. Apparently there are no Duke fans in Asheville. Oddly enough, all four people I know from Asheville went to UNC. Go figure.
Hickory Crawdads (South Atlantic League) -- Crawdads jersey
Rome Braves (South Atlantic League) -- lunch box
South Bend Silver Hawks (Midwest League) -- koozie
Everett AquaSox (Northwest League) -- football. I'll forgive them going football because their new logo is so awesome -- it's an old-school M's trident design turned on its side to make an E.

Sunday, Aug. 22
New York Yankees -- Yankees banner
Oakland A's -- Alteticos T-Shirt day. A yellow baseball shirt with the team's Spanish name.
Florida Marlins -- Billy the Marlin lunch cooler
Philadelphia Phillies -- Cole Hamels lunch bag cooler. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
St. Louis Cardinals -- Chris Carpenter bobblehead. It fights like a man, no bobblelegs here.
Corpus Christi (Texas League) -- metal lunch boxes.
Wilmington Blue Rocks (South Atlantic League) -- Harry Kalas bobblehead. A couple of years ago, I was in front of Kalas at the soda dispenser at the ballpark and kind of fumbled my cup. Kalas said something to me, and I said, "well, now I can tell everyone I've had Harry Kalas do play-by-play of my error." He laughed and I got a good story out of it.
Tri-City ValleyCats (New York-Penn League) -- Bracket Busters bobblehead. I have no idea what this means, but the team's website says it has something to do with the NFL.

-- C. Trent Rosecrans

This week in free stuff: Aug. 9-15

A look at this week in promotional giveaways from around baseball:

Tuesday, Aug. 10
Las Vegas 51s (Pacific Coast League) -- Rita Rudner bobblehead. I don't even know what to say about this one. I'm not sure I'd make the effort to get to the ballgame for this one.

Wednesday, Aug. 11
Lehigh Valley IronPigs (International League) -- Hambone mini bobblehead. I'm all for mascot races, especially when they feature pork. Lehigh Valley's features a hot dog, bacon and a side of ham. Everyone's doing them and I don't think it's a bad thing.
Richmond Flying Squirrels (Eastern League) -- Nutzy bobblehead. Mascot bobbleheads always go for more on eBay, and I think Nutzy the Flying Squirrel will be out of my price range, sadly.
Lancaster JetHawks (California League) -- Hawkette bobblehead. Another mascot, but not one I'll be searching for on eBay.
Lowell Spinners (New York-Penn League) -- Lou Merloni bobblehead. The Spinners are honoring a local legend.

Thursday, Aug. 12
Erie SeaWolves (Eastern Leagie) -- Al E. Gator bobblehead. It must be the week of the
Vancouver Canadians (Northwest League) -- wearable blanket

Friday, Aug. 13
Tampa Bay Rays -- t-shirt. Come for the T-shirt, stay for the Village People postage concert.
Atlanta Braves --  t-shirt
New York Mets -- Johan Santana koozie
Washington Nationals -- beer and pItcher cup set. Nats try to one-up their NL East foes by going all classy with an actual cup for beer drinking.
Trenton Thunder (Eastern League) -- travel mugs.
Springfield Cardinals (Texas League) -- floppy cap.
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (California League) -- Torii Hunter bobblehead. That bobblehead may accidentally bobble and hit the umpire and get a bobble suspension.
Lynchburg Hillcats (Carolina League) -- Phil Vassar bobblehead. I had to Google him. He's apparently a country music artist. Go figure.
Boise Hawks (Northwest League) -- playground ball. No pegging.

Saturday, Aug. 14
Cincinnati Reds -- garden gnome. Let's just say my wife has been bugging me about this one for a while. She loves garden gnomes. I don't get it either. That said, I've seen one and it's pretty cool.
Chicago White Sox -- Miller Lite Beer vendor bobblehead. Now that's an MVP.
Kansas City Royals  -- 1980 A.L. Champion coaster set. I was hoping for a U.L. Washington toothpick holder.
Minnesota Twins -- mini Target Field
New York Mets -- green cap. You know, because Aug. 14 is St. Declan's Day. He was St. Patrick's younger brother.
San Francisco Giants -- Bruce Bochy bobblehead. The rare bobblehead that is in its proper proportion.
Fresno Grizzlies (Pacific Coast League) -- Parker bobblehead. Another mascot.
Oklahoma City RedHawks (Pacific Coast League) -- RedHawks skateboard. This is one of the cooler promo items of the year, several teams have done them. However, I worried about some people when the Reds had a skateboard deck giveaway and someone dropped one from the upper deck. Luckily it didn't hit anybody.
Jacksonville Suns (Southern League) -- Logan Morrison bobblehead.
Arkansas Travelers (Texas) -- pillow cases. Somehow, I don't think my wife would let me use these.
Wilmington Blue Rocks (Carolina League) -- Judy Johnson book, "Judy Johnson Delaware's Invisible Hero." Really cool to educate fans about a former Negro Leaguer.
Lake County Captains (Midwest League) -- fleece blanket
West Michigan Whitecaps (Midwest League) -- superhero cape. A really cool giveaway for kids.
Boise Hawks (Northwest League) -- Tyler Colvin bobblehead. The Hawks apparently knew Colvin would have a good rookie season.

Sunday, Aug. 15
New York Mets -- metal lunchbox
Tampa Bay Rays -- Matt Garza bobblehead
Cleveland Indians -- Mustard (hot dog) plush doll
Cincinnati Reds -- kids chest protector backpack
Washington Nationals -- back-to-school supply kit
Richmond Flying Squirrels (Eastern League) -- metal lunchbox. Again, I gotta give the Flying Suqirrels the nod. The Mets have Jose Reyes, the Flying Suqirrels have Nutzy. Advantage Nutzy.

This week in free stuff: Aug. 2-9

A look at this week in promotional giveaways from around baseball:

Monday, Aug. 2
Ike Davis bobblehead Brooklyn Cyclones (New York-Penn League) -- Ike Davis bobblehead -- or bobblesomething. The Cyclones are celebrating Davis' three heads-over-heels caches over the dugout railing with an upside-down bobblehead, although I'm not sure what exactly bobbles.
Springfield Cardinals (Texas League) -- duffel bag. The practical giveaways are the best -- who can't use another duffel bag?

Tuesday, Aug. 3
Ryan Howard gnome Springfield Cardinals (Texas League) Whitey Herzog bobblehead. If you missed the big league team giving away Whitey bobbleheads last week, here's another chance.
Reading Phillies (Eastern League) -- Ryan Howard garden gnome. It kind of looks more like a wizard version of Ryan Howard, but, you know, either way my wife would love this, not because she likes Ryan Howard but because she has a really weird things with gnomes. When she saw our local nine had a gnome giveaway this year, she circled that date on the calendar.

Wednesday, Aug. 4
Chicago Cubs -- beer koozie. What else could you want or need at Wrigley Field?
Los Angeles Dodgers -- beach towel
Portland Sea Dogs (Eastern League) -- Hanley Ramirez bobblehead. I always appreciate when minor league clubs honor players who played for them, even if they're no longer in the organization. Kudos Sea Dogs.
State College Spikes (New York-Penn League) -- Daniel Moskos & Tony Sanchez double bobblehead

Thursday, Aug. 5
Lehigh Valley IronPigs (International League) -- Brian Schneider bobblehead
New Britain Rock Cats (Eastern League) -- beach towel
Brooklyn Cyclones (New York-Penn League) -- Irish Heritage Jersey
State College Spikes (New York-Penn league) -- kids Roberto Clemente Kids activity book. It's good to educate the kids.

Friday, Aug. 6
Baltimore Orioles -- Nick Markakis mini bobblehead
Detroit Tigers -- island-themed Tigers floppy hat. It's like a combo Magnum costume -- in floppy hat form. The pattern of a Hawaiian shirt and the Detroit Tigers' D
Pittsburgh Pirates --  Andrew McCutchen bobblehead
Buffalo Bisons (International League) -- toothbrush. This may be one of the lamer giveaways, I've got to admit.
Trenton Thunder (Eastern League) -- David Robertson bobblehead
Vermont Lake Monsters (New York-Penn League) Buster Olney bobblehead. When sportswriters get their own bobblehead, you may have run out of ideas. Olney grew up in the state.
Everett AquaSox (Northwest League) -- recycled tote bag

Saturday, Aug. 7
Kenny Lofton Cleveland Indians -- Kenny Lofton "The Catch" bobblehead. This one is great, I love bobbleheads from specific events, hence my Endy Chavez bobblehead. This one is from Lofton's catch over the wall of a sure homer by Baltimore's B.J. Surhoff on Aug. 4, 1996.
Florida Marlins -- samba whistle. Better than a vuvuzela.
Arizona Diamondbacks -- Luis Gonzalez bobblehead. In an added bonus, 50 fans will get an autographed, bronze version.
Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Pacific Coast League) -- Goose Gossage figurine.
Round Rock Express (Pacific Coast League) -- souvenir desk batting helmets
Northwest Arkansas Naturals (Texas League) -- lunchbox

Kinston Indians (Carolina League) -- reusable grocery bag
South Bend Silver Hawks (Midwest League) -- reusable grocery bag
Princeton Rays (Appalachian League) -- Wade Davis bobblehead
Billings Mustakens (Pioneer League) -- Jason LaRue bobblehead. See what Jason LaRue looked like before his awesome mustache (hint: less awesome).

Sunday, August 8
Milwaukee Brewers -- Italian sausage racing sausage bobblehead. I've gotten the bratwurst and a previous italian sausage bobblehead off of eBay, and I can tell you it's great. Although my wife said she didn't think it looked like a sausage.
Chicago Cubs -- light switch cover. Really, a nice, simple giveaway. It's got pinstripes and if you're a Cubs fan and have a man room or something, it's pretty cool.
Pittsburgh Pirates -- batting helmet. The classics never die.
Harrisburg Senators (Eastern League) -- Stephen Strasburg bobblehead. How'd he get his own bobblehead? Oh yeah. He's good.
Brooklyn Cyclones (New York-Penn League) -- MCU Park model.

-- C. Trent Rosecrans

This week in free stuff: July 26-August 1

A look at this week in promotional giveaways from around baseball:

Tonight, July 26
Lehigh Valley IronPigs (International League) -- Andy Tracy bobblehead
Binghamton Mets (Eastern League) -- mustache giveaway. Who doesn't love mustaches?
New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Eastern League) --kids batting glove giveaway. I love that they're going old school and just one. Ask your parents, kids.
Bristol White Sox (Appalachian League) -- kids batting helmet. Another old-school favorite.

Tuesday, July 27
Washington Nationals -- t-shirt. A classic, grey shirt. I hate when teams try to go too fancy and do some lame busy design, the simpler, the better.
Lehigh Valley IronPigs (International League) --Magic 8 Baseball. This is just awesome. It'd be great if they made the manager use this for all their decisions on the night. Bill Veeck woulda done it. This would have been my favorite of the day…
Toledo Mud Hens (International League)-- mustache giveaway. It must be a trend.
Arkansas Travelers (Texas League) -- Jared Weaver kids t-shirt jersey
Fredrick Keys (Carolina League) Bryan Voltaggio bobblehead. Who is Bryan Voltaggio you ask? Only the runner-up from Top Chef Season 6. If it were a Kevin Gillespie bobblehead, I'd drive there for it.
Princeton Rays (Rookie Appalachian League) --super mug. Apparently, it's a mug and it's super.

Wednesday, July 28
Houston Astros -- orange retro cap. The team wore those glorious 80s uniforms on Saturday, and now it's the orange hats. If only the Astros could skip the 90s and 2000s uniforms and pick one of the great old ones.
State College Spikes (New York-Penn League)  --golf umbrella
Tri-City ValleyCats (New York-Penn League) --reusable grocery bag

Thursday, July 29
New York Mets -- umbrella
Joe Biden Wilmington Blue Rocks (Carolina League) -- Joe Biden bobblehead. It'd be really cool if it was a one of those that talked and it cussed at you.
Lakewood BlueClaws (South Atlantic League) -- Goonies night. While not technically a giveaway, and I usually do just giveaways, but this one is too cool not to share. The BlueClaws are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Goonies, with Jeff Cohen (Chunk) at the game, signing autographs and judging a Truffle Shuffle contest.
Tri-City ValleyCats (New York-Penn League) County Executive Kathy Jimino bobblehead. Good for you, Kathy.

Friday, July 30
St. Louis Cardinals -- Vince Coleman bobblehead. No fireworks, though.
San Francisco Giants --Beat LA beach towel
Richmond Flying Squirrels (Eastern League) nutcracker -- I'm not normally a fan of Christmas in July promotions, but the Flying Squirrels giving out nutcrackers is awesome.
Arkansas Travelers (Texas League) -- camouflage hat
Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Carolina League) -- christmas ornament
Potomac Nationals (Carolina League) -- mini bat
Lexington Legends (South Atlantic League) Big L soap dispenser. I'm seriously considering going to this. I love giveaways of practical items, and this is a good one.
Clinton LumberKings (Midwest League) -- John Danks bobblehead
Boise Hawks (Northwest League) -- Boise Whistle Pigs T-shirt. Part of Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda Night, honoring one of the other finalists for nickname of the team.

Saturday, July 31
Cincinnati Reds -- Homer Bailey bobblehead
Kansas City Royals -- Kansas City Monarchs cap. I love Negro League tributes, and Kansas City, home to the Negro Leagues Hall of Fame, always does a good job.
Los Angeles Angels -- Rally Monkey soap dispenser. OK, forget the Lexington Legends… I'll be hitting eBay for this batboy.
Washington Nationals -- Nyjer Morgan bobblehead. Really, it's great for the stirrups if nothing else.
Houston Astros -- Jeff Bagwell bobblehead
St. Louis Cardinals -- Whitey Herzog bobblehead
Colorado Rockies -- Jason Giambi t-shirt. With sleeves, oddly enough.
San Diego Padres -- Clayton Richard bobblehead
Fresno Grizzlies (Pacific Coast League) --  Buster Posey bobblehead
Carolina Mudcats (Southern League) -- pint glass
Arkansas Travelers (Texas Leage) -- Hank Conger bobbleheads
Corpus Christi Hooks (Texas Leage) -- Hooks retro jersey. Which is  odd, since the franchise has only been around since 2005. It's more old-school Astros style, which I'm always in favor of.
Springfield Cardinals (Texas League) -- Cardinals/Royals I-70 Series throwback shirts. The Cardinals are playing the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, the Royals' AA affiliate.
Bowling Green Hot Rods (South Atlantic League) -- Farmer Axle Bobblehead
Auburn Doubledays (New York-Penn league) --  William Seward bobblehead. The team is honoring the former governor of New York and Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. Seward also helped procure Alaska and was blasted for it at the time.
Brooklyn Cyclones (New York-Penn League) -- sleeved blanket. Yeah, not a Snuggie.
Greenville Astros (Appalachian League) -- aluminum bottle

Sunday, Aug. 1
Minnesota Twins -- Target Field bat
St. Louis Cardinals -- Ozzie Smith bear. This is in honor of the 1985 NL championship, but I'm disappointed there's no Willie McGee bobblehead. Really, if anyone is screaming for a bobblehead, it's McGee.
Harrisburg Seantors (Eastern League) -- autographed baseball grab bag
Richmond Flying Squirrels (Eastern League) --  wooden bat
Trenton Thunder (Eastern League) kids fielding gloves
Inland Empire 66ers (California League) -- skate deck
Beloit Snappers (Midwest League) -- Kevin Slowey bobblehead
West Michigan Whitecaps (Midwest League) -- dog bowl

-- C. Trent Rosecrans

This week in free stuff: July 19-26

What's better than a day at the ballpark? A day at the ballpark and free stuff.

I remember as a kid going to a Tidewater Tides (as the Norfolk Tides were called then) and getting a Tides batting glove. I wore that batting glove even though it was for my left hand and I was a left-handed hitter. I loved that thing, with the Tides logo and elastic wristband. Since then, I've loved ballpark giveaways (or SGA as you can find them on eBay) and have a collection of odds and ends such as an Endy Chavez bobblehead or a Macon Braves batting helmet (I only get them now as a paying fan, not as part of the job). As a proud owner of a Savannah Sand Gnats Gnic the Gnat bobblehead, I often check around to see what's being given away at ballparks around the country. So here it is, this week in free stuff, from the majors and minors. Keep in mind, this isn't a complete list, just the ones I find most interesting, and even if many think bobbleheads are passe, I'm still a big fan and you'll see most of them here.

Tonight, July 19
Chicago Cubs -- a Cubs mouse pad… if you still use one of those. Ask your parents, kids.
Johnson City Cardinals (Rookie Appalachian League) -- seat cushion. One of the more underrated and classic give-aways, you don't see them as much anymore, yet your butt could still use a cushion after nine innings.

Tuesday, July 20
Los Angeles Dodgers -- James Loney bobblehead
New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Eastern League) -- Dustin Pedroia bobblehead
Richmond Flying Squirrels (Southern League) -- logo ball. I'm not usually a big logo ball fan, but this logo is a flying squirrel.
Lakewood BlueClaws (South Atlantic League) -- paint your own Clawd bobblehead. Clawd is the team's mascot.
State College Spikes (New York-Penn League) -- eco-friendly cooler bag. I was at a Marlins game once and they gave out gas cans. I'm usually a big fan of practical give-aways, but I didn't take that one.

Brookly Cyclones Wednesday, July 21
Baltimore Orioles -- foam finger. A classic. I'd love to see the foam finger make a comeback, even if a No. 1 is a little unrealistic for the Orioles.
Chicago Cubs -- key chain. This one is actually a nice, simple design, something that can often be done wrong and is done well here.
Brooklyn Cyclones (New York-Penn League) -- "Jersey? Sure!" Jersey. It's actually kinda great. The Cyclones are one of the minor league leaders in both quantity and quality of giveaways.

Manny Ramirez Thursday, July 22
Pittsburgh Pirates -- T-shirt. I don't normally get too excited by free t-shirts, but this one has a nice Pirate theme with a ship and all.
Los Angeles Dodgers -- Manny Ramirez action figure. Action figures are this year's attempt at replacing bobbleheads. The Dodgers went the extra mile and made each of their three action figures as superheroes, but it still doesn't quite work.
Bowie BaySox (Eastern League) -- Nolan Reimold bobblehead. The Orioles prospect is getting his own bobblehead.
Iowa Cubs (Pacific Coast League) -- Casey Blake bobblehead. Blake is an Iowa native.
Portland Sea Dogs (Eastern League) -- Adrian Gonzalez bobblehead.
Corpus Christi Hooks (Texas League) -- Aussie hat. Not bad for a day at the beach on North Padre Island.
Lakewood BlueClaws (South Atlantic Laegue) -- Dusty Wathan bobblehead. Wathan, son of former Royals manager John "Duke" Wathan, was the manager of the BlueClaws last season when the team won the South Atlantic League title and like most of his players, got called up. He's now the manager of the High-A Clearwater Threshers in the Phillies organization.
Great Lakes Loons (Midwest League) -- Bill Freehan bobblehead. The Loons are honoring Tiger legends with bobbleheads this season and Freehan is Michigan through-and-through. Freehan was born in Detroit, played football and baseball at the University of Michigan and then spent his entire 15-year career with the Tigers.
Orem Owlz (Frontier League) -- Torii Hunter bobblehead.

Friday, July 23
Evan Longoria Baltimore Orioles -- tankard. More realistic than the foam finger, Orioles fans can drink away their problems in style.
Houston Astros -- gym bag. Again, one of the practical giveaways. I have a Braves bag I still use.
Montgomery Biscuits (Southern League) -- Evan Longoria bobblehead.
Clearwater Threshers (Florida State League) -- Mike Schmidt bobblehead.
West Michigan Whitecaps (Midwest League) -- Larry Herndon bobblehead. It's a big week for former Tigers, apparently. Herndon caught the last out of the 1984 World Series.
Brooklyn Cyclones (New York-Penn League) -- Fireman Sandy bobblehead. A bobblehead of the mascot Sandy in a fireman's uniform.
Vermont Lake Monsters (New York-Penn League) -- Champ bobblehead. A friend of mine has a large collection of bobbleheads and says the mascot ones go for the most money on the secondary market.

Saturday, July 24
New York Yankees -- lunch box. I love the metal lunch boxes, they're a popular giveaway -- and for good reason.
Grady Sizemore Cleveland Indians -- Grady Sizemore bobblehead. One of the few chances to see Grady Sizemore in action at Progressive Field.
Houston Astros -- rainbow sleeve t-shirt.
Milwaukee Brewers -- grill master apron.
Las Vegas 51s (Pacific Coast League) -- wall clock.
Inland Empire 66ers (California League) -- James Loney bobblehead.
Visalia Rawhide (California League) -- beach blanket.
Kinston Indians (Carolina League) -- Lonnie Chisenhall bobblehead. The Indians prospect is nearly ready for the big leagues and he already has a bobblehead.
Hagerstown Suns (South Atlantic League) -- Little Heiskell bobblehead. Little Heiskell is a German soldier weathervane figure that has become a symbol of the city.
Rome Braves (South Atlantic League) -- Tommy Hanson bobblehead.
West Michigan Whitecaps (Midwest League) -- glow-in-the-dark baseball.
State College Spikes (New York-Penn League) -- kids fielding glove giveaway. As a kid, these always kinda bummed me out, because it's not like they have a left-handed option. Sure, they're never good enough to actually use, but that's little consolation to a sad little left-handed kid.
Everett AquaSox (Northwest League) -- fleece blanket. One of my favorites, although many teams are moving toward Snuggie-like blankets instead of the usual throw.

Sunday, July 25
Philadelphia Phillies -- Chase Utley action figure. Like the real Utley, this one no longer has a cast on his hand.
Milwaukee Brewers -- Robin Yount bobblehead. Not only is Yount wearing a great old Brewers uniform, the Yountstache is in full effect.
Albuquerque Isotopes (Pacific Coast League) -- Orbit bobblehead. Another great mascot bobblehead. Most minor league mascots are better in bobblehead form than mascot form.
Reno Aces (Pacific Coast League) -- skateboard deck. Another new one this season, the Aces deck is one of the best.
New Britain Rock Cats (Eastern League) -- paint your own bobblehead.
Greensboro Grasshoppers (South Atlantic League) -- Chris Coghlan figurine.
Bowling Green Hot Rods (Midwest League) -- lunch box.
Lake County Captains (Midwest League) -- Skipper leg lamp bobblehead. It's the leg of the mascot, Skipper, and it's a leg lamp, just like Cleveland's own A Christmas Story.
Lowell Spinners (New York-Penn League) -- Allie Gator bobblehead.
